Uninstalling a $475 modification on my Shelby GT350... **This one hurts

  • In today's video I'm uninstalling a $475 modification on my 2017 Shelby GT350. I didn't want to put the companies name in the title since I'm not bashing them, the product/shifter just wasn't for me. With that said, I uninstalled my MGW Race Spec Short Shifter from my car, but please watch the entire video for the full details.
    The shifter I had is compatible with 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 Shelby GT350s.

What’s up guys, tough video for me to make, but have had a lot of people ask about my experience with the shifter. I wish MGW would offer an option with less spring tension and then I would likely be a buyer again. A lot of guys love this shifter as is, it just wasn’t for me.

Good call Jeff , that push down would drive me nuts , plus the stock shifter is really good in my opinion. Have a good day bro .

Hey Steve! Yeah, I was never a fan of the push down but was wanted to give the MGW a shot based on their reputation which is outstanding. I felt bad making this video, but the stock shifter is excellent and I had no issues with it to begin with. I'll probably make a follow up video, but downshifts are buttery smooth again!

I also have the MGW shifter installed on my gt350. I have the cue ball style shift knob which surprisingly gives a smoother in-hand feel during shifts but I definitely see where you’re coming from with the on-off switch metaphor. I was hoping it might loosen a little over time but I guess not. Thanks for sharing.

Agreed, great feature since not everybody has the same preference. I really liked it on my GT, but think at this point I’m going to stick with the stock unit. Barton didn’t make a shifter yet for the 350 when I picked mine up.

First let me say I completely get what you're saying. I've had MGW shifters in both a regular S550 GT as well as my current GT350. Right out of the gate, the GT350+MGW felt pretty stiff and certain gear changes (4-->5, 3->2) felt difficult and clunky. Not at all like the GT+MGW. Two things I did to help with that: raise the knob and get a weighted knob. You can raise that knob about an inch or so and get some of your leverage back. I know you said you like the knob low, but for performance driving you actually want it closer to the wheel. There are a lot of threads on the MGW shifter handle and only some of them are really engaged at any point in time. Use the rubber washers they supply (I bought extra from the hardware store) to make sure there's no ugly gap between the knob and the boot. As for the weighted knob, I got a custom knob from Billetworkz. Not sure what it weighs but it's solid stainless. The weight definitely helps. Now my downshifts are easy and the shifter doesn't feel sloppy like the factory one. It's pretty perfect.

I would definitely put a Barton back in it, but the stock unit on the Tremec suffices just as well, where as the MT82 shifter leaves a lot to be desired!

I had it installed in my 2016 GT. At first it was very stiff, and hard to get into reverse. It loosened up. But you have to shift more deliberately, because it does take more effort.

Your right it comes down to personal preference. I have no issues down shifting but wish it was adjustable. I also had a Barton fail on me so I will never purchase another one. They are both great shifters in their own way. But honestly stock with a weighted shift knob was pretty amazing.

Hey Jeff, If you really like the height of the shifter with the MGW, and don't want to struggle downshifting at the track and also getting into gears in general, I highly recommend the steeda short throw LEVER only.
This is my set up and it's great and easy to find gears at the track.

wish you would have called me ...you CAN remove the spring in the unit if you want less pressure. They arent adjustable but they can be removed . oh well. I bet if you put one of our race knobs on it you would also get the leverage you want.

Maybe they have a lighter spring? I had issues with the stock shifter. I just got a recall on the reverse lock out, and one thing I noticed is that on few occasions during spirited shifting, it would not engage first gear and it either pop'd out, or would grind going into first. I had this happen a few times and I thought it was my shifting, but after researching and getting this recall notice, I am pretty sure the stock shifter is not as good as I had hoped and is causing this issue.
