A very down to earth MP!
Met him during his shopping trip and I asked to speak to him about my drug problem outside my HDB home. Without hesitation, took note of my case and he wrote to the police and other relevant authorities and cc copied to me!
    No more problems after that.
Never had he said to meet him at the MPS!
I truly respect Mr Yatiman !

Kudos, Ex-MP Yatiman Yusof, you are a wise man, eloquent and clear ideas communicator and your demeanour, of absolute sincerety. As a person slightly older than you, I share your observations in your dialogue. Undoubtedly, there was no Singapore in our past origination but just evolution, those moments have had changed the creatures inhabiting this original ground. However, I am positive about the future... As you spoke, 60 years is long time, I beg for more time for solutions than divisions. Have a purposeful journey.

Baik-lah, Encik Yatiman. As a non-Malay Singaporean, I think the Singaporean Malays themselves have done very well, after coming a long way. Congratulations. What I just want to say here is that the kind of "trust" that I would love to see most in my country is both of the "implicit" and "explicit" kind. Macam the kind shown by a good team in a baton-relay race - where each runner, tau sama tau, is not only speedy, but each also carrying and passing the baton smoothly and skilfully to the next runner without dropping it. Demikian itu, kita maju. Majulah Singapura.

When I was finally posted in Tengah Airbase, I was surprised, despite being a sensitive unit, there were Chinese with drugs offences, who managed to get in. Understanding. Trust. Repeated again and again but after 60 years of government investment the problems besetting the Malay community at large - low income, poor diet, low education level, addiction - remain. Why?
The matter of religion and its influence was skilfully skirted in this discussion. Lee Kuan Yew noted in an interview, he never said Malays were not good citizens, but then went on to suggest they had not integrated but remained very much separate from the rest of the public. It seems Malay integration had failed, and the reason does not lie in past British policies nor lack of resolve by the Singapore government.

The old MP only observed one side of Singapore story.
    Did he realised, "
In Singapore, why are most security guards predominantly Malays?
Why are the elderly individuals clearing food trays in hawker centres usually Chinese?
Why are the aged uncles and aunties selling tissues near food courts often Chinese?
Why are the elderly Chinese uncles and aunties the ones collecting cardboard and old items? 0:01

    • @pgobserver254
      @pgobserver254 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Why don’t we see elderly Malays doing jobs like clearing trays in hawker centres or selling tissues near food courts? 0:01

    • @pgobserver254
      @pgobserver254 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

My observations touch on some complex social and economic dynamics in Singapore. Here are some insights:
Security Guards: The security industry in Singapore has a significant number of Malay workers. This could be due to various factors, including community networks, job availability, and historical employment patterns12. Additionally, the security sector often provides stable employment opportunities that may appeal to certain demographics.
Hawker Centre Cleaners: Many of the older workers clearing trays in hawker centres are Chinese. This might be linked to the aging population within the Chinese community and the availability of such jobs, which are often less demanding in terms of language skills and qualifications34.
Tissue Sellers: Elderly Chinese individuals selling tissues is a common sight. This could be due to a combination of factors, including limited retirement savings, a desire to remain active, and the lack of other employment opportunities56.
Cardboard Collectors: The elderly Chinese population is also prominent among those collecting cardboard. This activity is often seen as a way to supplement their income, especially for those who may not have sufficient retirement funds78.
These patterns reflect broader socio-economic trends and the challenges faced by different communities in Singapore. It’s important to recognize the resilience and hard work of these individuals, who contribute significantly to the society despite the difficulties they face.

    • @pgobserver254
      @pgobserver254 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

The absence of elderly Malays in certain jobs like clearing trays in hawker centres or selling tissues near food courts can be attributed to various socio-economic and cultural factors:
Community Support: The Malay community in Singapore often has strong family and community support systems. This can provide better care and financial assistance for the elderly, reducing the need for them to take up such jobs.
Employment Patterns: Different communities may have varying employment patterns and job preferences. Historical and cultural factors can influence the types of jobs that are more common within each community.
Government Assistance: Singapore has various social assistance programs that might be more effectively utilized by some communities. These programs can help elderly individuals avoid having to take up low-paying or physically demanding jobs.
Cultural Norms: Cultural norms and values can also play a role. In some communities, there might be a stronger emphasis on caring for the elderly within the family, which can reduce the need for them to seek employment.
These factors contribute to the observed differences in job roles among the elderly in Singapore. It’s a complex issue influenced by a mix of social, economic, and cultural dynamics. 0:01

These are the grievances of Malay Singaporeans towards PAP. I am Hokkien chinese Singaporean, I believe that chinese Singaporeans have grievances towards PAP too! It's too simple, too naive to say that Lee Kuan Yew did not impose mandarin as standard language because he didn't want assimilation. Before Lee Kuan Yew was Lee Kuan Yew, he was Harry Lee. Harry Lee is from the peranakan baba minority group in Singapore. They were trusted by the british colonials. They were a pro british westernised minority group. I am from hokkien chinese group. The british didn't trust us. The peranakans are a hybrid cultural group, they are not really chinese. They don't speak any form of chinese language. Lee Kuan Yew doesn't speak chinese, He doesn't speak any kind of dialects at all. He suppressed the dialects in Singapore. "Dialects" are not "dialects" at all. If you are hokkien, hokkien "dialect" is your mother tongue. Mandarin is a northern chinese dialect. Nothing to do with southern min nan hokkiens at all. It is total joke to say that mandarin is mother tongue of southern chinese. Complete joke. Lee Kuan Yew suppressed the chinese schools because they were a power base of the dialect chinese. It is all politics. As a matter of fact, Singapore have be ruled by peranakans since 1959. This is why Singapore is not "chinese" but westernised. Our chinese culture, our language is being destroyed! Who is peranakan? Lee Kuan Yew is peranakan. Lee Hsien Loong is peranakan. Tony Tan is peranakan. Wee Kim Wee is peranakan. Goh Keng Swee is peranakan. Lim kim San is Peranakan. Toh Chin Chye is peranakan. We are ruled by peranakans. But I am not anti peranakan. They have contributed a lot to development of Singapore, but we have our grievances!

Very good discussion but misses the elephant in the room even though it was touched on. Why is the Malay community still lagging behind even in a system that professes meritocracy in Singapore? Similar to their Malaysian counterparts they feel that they are the privileged race to always be given priority over others amidst slightly differently worded provisions in their respective constitutions. It's their *entitlement mentality* that is holding them back as they always feel that they deserve better preferential treatment in everything and everywhere in every level of society even though their individual skills and knowledge may not be on par with others competing in whatever endeavours or job positions and they somehow felt discriminated against if they were not given special preferential treatment and sulk. Whereas others especially the Chinese and Indians always look for ways at how to better themselves whenever they fail to achieve what they aspire for. The very provisions that were designed to protect them against discrimination are now working against them to move on as a progressive group of people.
That's why over pampering children will make them too dependent and they lose their ability to be independent and stand on their own two feet.❤

Here are some concrete statistics on drug abuse in Singapore by ethnicity:
Malay Community: In 2022, approximately 1,300 drug abusers in Singapore were of Malay ethnicity, making it the largest ethnic group represented among drug abusers1.
Chinese Community: The Chinese community follows, with a significant number of drug abusers as well1.
Indian and Other Communities: There are also notable numbers of drug abusers from the Indian community and other ethnic groups2.
These statistics indicate that while the Malay community has a higher representation, drug abuse is a widespread issue affecting multiple communities in Singapore. It’s crucial to address the root causes and provide support across all groups to effectively combat this problem. 0:01

A good interview. The policy of meritocracy is implemented to a T; every Singaporean regardless of race, language or religion has a chance to succeed either by themselves or with help from the community. From this opportunity, some Malays (like all the other races) are more successful than others. They appear (are observed) to be slowly but steadily disassociating themselves from the less successful Malays who are facing the problems or issues of the day. Are they doing enough to help their Malay brothers and sisters (not just the religious aspects) through community work through their expertise or skills as well as resources? The issue is they see themselves more as a Muslim (ie religion, spiritual) rather than Malay (ie culture, civilisation). Majority of Malays consider religion first and culture second. As an example, Malays who own a second home in Johore and elsewhere are definitely different from Malays who go to Johore to buy groceries and returning home to their HDB flats. The latter group is more attuned with the other ordinary citizens (the Ah Pek and Ah Soh and the Muthusamy)

There was an unfortunate side effect to the non-recruitment of Malays into National Service. Employers in Singapore are generally unwilling to recruit or train young male workers who have not completed National Service or obtained exemption papers as these youths can be called up at any time. Since Malays were not officially exempted from National Service, Malay youths were unable to obtain apprenticeships or regular jobs, and many were forced into an extended limbo period of about 10 years from ages 14 to 24 … (this) was in part responsible for the high percentage of Malay youths who became involved in heroin abuse during the late 1970s

On the same note, there was much improvement in the educational level for the Malays. In other aspects of social development, the Malays are lacking to overcome it and are somehow deeply rooted in the community. Drug addiction is more of a self-created problem which no government can change. It is for them to build a strong resilience to drugs and other negative aspects of social behaviours. The government's policy is very important and could change the perception of whether the Malay community can be trusted or not or if there is bias in the policy that the Malays feel not validated.

Why do young Malay women in Singapore love to drive Mercedes?
Answer: The preference for driving luxury cars like Mercedes among young Malay women in Singapore can be influenced by several factors:
Status Symbol: Driving a luxury car like a Mercedes can be seen as a status symbol, reflecting success and financial stability. This can be appealing to young professionals who want to showcase their achievements.
Cultural Trends: There might be cultural trends and influences within the community that make luxury cars particularly desirable. Social media and peer influence can play a significant role in shaping these preferences.
Financial Capability: With increasing educational and career opportunities, many young Malay women are achieving financial independence and success, allowing them to afford luxury items like cars1.

The traditional route for regular male staff in these two branches of the Armed Forces is NS and so there is high possibility that a NSmen in the RSN and RSAF will sign on as regulars under various schemes which is ‘untouchable’ to outsiders or applicants and of course the Malays. When the Vigilante Corps(VC) merged with the Fire Service to become Civil Defence(SCDF), it becomes the ‘dumping’ ground for Malays NSmen. In my view, the Malay people have evolved from their former state of indolence, as described by British colonist such as Frank Swettenham. Nonetheless, their culture and Islamic religious convictions continue to restrict their capacity to live an opulent lifestyle while residing in the world. The saying "a handful of sustenance will not turn into a bushel" is one of the many cultures that still afflict the Malays. It implies that no matter how hard we strive, the amount of sustenance that God has determined will not change. Similar to this, religion holds that no matter what possessions or money we amass during our lifetime, all we really carry with us when we die is only a white cloth, and our happiness in the hereafter is determined by the good deeds and acts of worship we perform during our lifetime. The outcome of this understanding makes Malays less competitive in the eyes of other races, which in turn makes them feel as though, although living in their own country, they are being left behind. That’s why Malays in Malaysia greatly depend on and uphold their allegiance to their sultans as the leaders of the Islamic faith and the protectors of their interests inside their different realms. The Malays in those kingdoms without sultans feel especially vulnerable since they are wholly dependent on God and others who may rule them.

Not true. Poor Muslims living during the time of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w, complaint to him, that they are poor and nothing to give to charity and the prophet replied their smiles are a charity unto others. Meaning the majority of muslims are expected for be rich, so they can score points by giving to the poor. The richer the better because you prove that you are not the slave to your wealth but you continue to provide to the community no matter what race or religion. Understanding of the religion was lost post colonial age and it is hard to start back especially with corruptions from extremist and demonizing by pro Isrell lobby.

@@gel-go-gett - The narrative you mentioned is one that is often told these days to encourage Malays especially to become more competitive, even though they were formerly content and grateful for their circumstances. If they are able to obtain more than they need, at least then they will be able to help the poor to find God's blessings in the hereafter. But this isn't necessarily how human nature works; those who are wealthy tend to be more avaricious in their desire to hang onto their wealth, and the poor continue to bear the burden of their lack. Just look at how wealthy Arab countries are today unable to help the oppressed and destitute Arabs of Palestine, even though they are fellow Muslims and the place where the Islamic religion began. You can use any tale to reinforce your sense of self, depending on how much interpretation you are capable of.

Bro , Wanna Try Explain the Phenomena Why The Chinese Peranakans despite All having Muslim Roots have evolved to become so much more Integrated & Prosperous AFTER Ditching/ Distancing from Islam or Labelled Muslim? ie. Coincidence , Phenomenonetc ??

@@gel-go-gett - The Peranakan people, especially those in Malaysia, cannot be classified as Malays, regardless of how similar their language and culture are to those of the Malays, at least according to the present Malaysian Constitution, Malaysian Malays now have a more Islamic-looking appearance than before. When you compare them to my generation, their socialising is actually rather restricted. While many Malay women today opt to wear baju kurung and hijab, in the past they still frequently wore short skirts to the school and office. They are also very picky when it comes to food these days because they want to be sure that everything is halal, whereas in the past whatever they could eat was allowed as long as it didn't contain pork.
Actually, they have received very selective socialisation since they now prefer to hang out with other Muslims, maybe because they consider those who practise the same religion to be brothers. Comparing the Malays to the Peranakans exactly is incorrect since the Malays are peoples that originate from the Malay Archipelago and are more distinct in that they practise Islam. The Peranakans, on the other hand, are primarily Chinese in origin and do not practise Islam. If you were to ask me personally, I would say that I prefer living in the time I do, when we can enjoy ourselves without fear of being accused of being unIslamic, but the reality is that things change and shape who we are as people of today.

Malays in Singapore are the most successful Malays anywhere, including north of the Causeway. In Singapore, success is mostly measured in $$$$ and financial success is a function of ambition, drive, and the single-minded pursuit of material wealth. This is not the ethos or culture of most Malay people, who typically have a much more balanced way of life.

At least the muslims-malays were recognised as a race in singapore. Eurasians fr decades were regarded as ‘Others’. Even in their ICs. ! Only within these past two decades or so we finally could add Eurasian in our IC. Before that even in application forms fr whatever, there will be’Race: and indian, Chinese, malays’ were indicated. And eurasians had to tick ‘Others!’
Even today people refer to eurasians as ‘sarong party ‘ eurasians. Degrogratory

Nothing in this interview will change anything for the Malays.
He no longer holds an office in the present government to influence in policy making
He does not set up any foundation/organization so others can learn about his thoughts on the Malay dilemma
This is the Malay Dilemma.. life goes on.. talk but no empirical data to support any views.
