  • It's mid-October 2020 but here in southern California we're still stuck in a heatwave. The calendar says it's fall but everything else, including the heatwave and lack of rain, says we're still stuck in California's Fifth Season.
The "Fifth Season" in California has to do with our Mediterranean climate of wet winters extremely dry summers. The Fifth Season comes after most blossoms have faded in mid-summer and extends until the first rains arrive, usually in mid-October or later. It's like winter for California native plants when many of them shut down, become dormant, or simply take a rest.
California native plants blooming in the Fifth Season include Apricot desert globemallow, autumn sage, Blackfoot daisy, Calylophus hartwegii 'Sundrops', Mexican honeysuckle, Santa Barbara Mexican bush sage, and Tecoma 'Sierra Apricot'. Hope you enjoy!

What are the yellow flowers called. Do you have a list of the California natives.
