First time I moved into a place, I had no idea what to do and had no one to help me. So I just tried on my best poker face and mimicked what I'd seen my Papa do when he used to check out new cars or trailers or model homes. "Uhh, well there's a sink, I should turn the knobs. And here's the utility closet, I should peer around where the pipes lead." I didn't do a very good job but I noticed the landlord suddenly got more talkative about when it was all last updated and when their handyman typically came around. 👀

"(T)urn the dishwasher on..." I would add to that: listen to it filling with water and splashing the water around. Then, advance the timer to the drain portion if manual or use the Cancel/Drain function. Advance to the dry portion if manual or otherwise hold your hand near the burner to ensure that heat is coming from it. After this, check for leaks below the unit and where the unit is connected to the plumbing, as advised in the video.

Thanks! I have a lease starting and the furnace is clearly out of maintenance order as all the vents are filthy, so we didn't accept the unit. we gave the deposit and we're waiting for him to fix that before moving in. Also forced air heat control doesn't seem to be working and without any heat I believe this new home is inhabitable for now. Does that mean that our lease is void? Or I need to give the tenant the legal time to fix it, even if I didn't move in yet? Thanks again

The cheaper the rent the faster away from the slumplex you should run

I'm based in Sydney Australia and unfortunately the conditional report is only done after the rental bond and deposit is taken and I didn't get access to the place until moving day so now I have to take some photos while I'm unpacking. What is your advise on this ?

At first I thought the video quality was off, but turns out this was extremely helpful. As long as I can get the information, who cares about the quality. The lady knows her stuff - it's likely not part of her job description to be on camera.
It's ok not to have a smiling person cracking jokes with memes and gifs every 5 seconds to keep our dying attention spans engaged.
