    The 50s and 60s had open to atmosphere crankcase vents. The breather or catch can cleaning would tell you or show you what is expelled from the crankcase especially up north. Some people have to be heard regardless if right or wrong. My thought if you can’t fix it don’t ride it. I had a vtx bike once. It had a hidden plastic catch tube behind the air cleaner. It caught tons of sludge. But the funny part was most that had sludge issues didn’t know they had it and it was full. Another foot in mouth case. I would not waste my time responding to wanna be mechanics. I enjoy your channel and products. Keep up the good work.

      What is your thoughts on the trask trans top cover with the breather in it for the m8 I have a 20 softail standard and already have one of your intakes and external breather systems I wasn't sure if adding would be good or unnecessary ?

      @@donreynolds6447 Thank you for your comment, and we appreciate your business.
      Yes, in the last year there has been a lot of talk about this subject. I have seen NO data, No testing, thus No results supporting the thought that an additional breather is needed.
      It does make sense (not tested or proven) that if a bike has a problem with sumping that venting the crank would be a band-aid that might help...Until the problem that is causing the sumping is addressed. I personally would fix whatever was causing the sumping.
      If you have no sumping issues, then it is completely un-needed. You already are venting the crank pressure via your External Breather System.

      Thank you, we appreciate your business. Yes, it can make quite a difference to put only cool, clean, oxygen rich air into the combustion chambers. That hot, oily, oxygen depleted air just takes up space in the intake charge, robbing the bike of power.

    Greetings from downunder I just installed a external breather on my 2014 Fatboy lo,of my own design,I used a brake fluid reservoir as the catch can after traveling 800 km I was amazed how much gunk was in it which would have ended up.inside the engine.

    I installed your EBS with catchcan and 606 air cleaner kit on my 2018 street glide special. I got great throttle response and could feel that little extra power from the nonrestrictive air cleaner. What I found in the catchcan was disgusting and wish I had purchased this sooner. While talking to my local mechanic before I went on a 600 mile trip he told me to take the EBS system off because it was actually beneficial to let that crap run back into your throttlebody and that there was vacuum coming from those tubes. According to him if I had hit the interstate on my 600 mile trip I’m more than likely would’ve blown my engine. I have a complete stage one on the bike now along with a Feuling Vented dipstick. He said to keep the dipstick but take the EBS off. I did take the EBS off because I’ll be honest this mechanic is well known and does great work and he’s constantly tearing down M8 motors because they’re blowing up. I do believe in your product and I am gonna reinstall the EBS system when I get my new gaskets . I do believe I have a issue because before I went on my trip I changed my transmission and primary fluids, I had 40 ounces in my primary and 26 ounces in my transmission. I believe there’s only supposed to be roughly five or take 30 ounces in the primary so I don’t know where the other 10 came from. When I got back from my trip my oil level had fallen down to the bottom dimple of the side stand check while it was cold where it’s normally in the middle. My bikes been running good but I do have something going on with fluids transferring

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, a lot to unpack in your message. Let's do the easiest first.
      1. It sounds like you are having a transfer of fluid from the transmission to the primary. This was common until late 2019. Then Harley started putting a vent, as OEM, in the primary to stop that transfer. Here is a video on that subject- th-cam.com/video/B_EhFFKvHEM/w-d-xo.html
      2. I do not want to offend, but I also want to be honest with you. Between your mechanic not knowing/telling you about the primary transfer, and then their advice on the EBS, I recommend re-evaluating your opinion.
      3. Your year M8 is in the 2017-2019 period when HD had problems with sumping (which can lead to the engine "blowing up"). Someone should check that out on your bike and fix it, if it needs fixing, BEFORE it "blows up". The vented dipstick is just a band-aid for bikes that are borderline having a sumping issue.
      4. I don't even know what to think about a mechanic that would say that an EBS could lead to an engine blowing up. I do know that if any mechanic ever seriously said that, I would never let them near my bike. There is no significant vacuum at the throttle body end of those tubes...the vacuum in the throttle body is going to take the path of least resistance, and that is thru the air filter.
      Any vacuum present at the end of the tubes is NOT going to make it to the crankcase...it has to go thru the umbrella valves (which are one way...relieving pressure from the crankcase) and then thru the rocker box, and then thru the pushrod tubes, and then thru the crankshaft. It just does not happen, even if the one way umbrella valves are defective/worn out/malfunctioning.
      Sounds like you already got that part figure out.
      Wishing you many miles of smiles!

    Some engine builders say it is unnecessary if you run a vented dipstick or vented transmission cover... all I know is that my bike runs better. I also run the vented transmission cover. Keeping the snot out of combustion chamber makes perfect sense. Venting the transmission cover also helps with blowby that many owners experience, which results in excessive oil consumption. Keep these videos rolling. I enjoy them :-)

    I installed you're external breathers with a catchcan on my 95 sportster. Hands join the best thing I've done. I actually had to re-tune the carb and have been saving a little money for fuel! The only things I changed are the parts that connect the breather bolts to the hose and the t fitting. I switched over to a nicer quality set of chromed, billet metal ones I had made, and a brass t fitting to go with the theme of the bike. Besides that, 100% worth it, even got a little power boost and some fuel economy out of it.

    Great vid response guys, now I will tell you my story: My baby is a FLSB 2019 Sport Glide and after watching your info on external breather system purchased it and installed it. I already had a stage 1 kit and had just had HD install a SE stage 2 kit. Now I know what my bike does performance wise as I run in the stage 1 kit a Vance & Hines FP3 and MPG/KPL (I live in Australia) and it was within spec to originals. Just prior to the install of the stage 2 kit I installed your system and it was noticed by the HD mechanics who commented (all three) they know why its done and agree with why as its all to do with certain regs. I was also about to embark on a 6900 kilometer ride from Victoria to Far North Queensland (there and back in 9 days) doing 800k's a day on the way up sitting on 120k's cruise until the tank ran dry then fill up and go again. The bike never missed a beat and I can attest MPG/KML increased by more than 10% and I ran like a dream. On return from the trip the bike was dynoed as it could not be done before I had to take the trip and the mechanics at HD stated how well the bike was running and on inspection of your system noticed how clean it was and were very impressed to the point will recommend it to anyone you asks the question on burning exhaust gases in an M8 motor or any than can take your system without an external can. Bit long winded enjoy your vids love your products (shame its hard to get them hear in OZ) keep up the great work.

    I recently saw a video where Kevin Baxter of Pro Twin Performance was tearing down an M8 engine that had 80k miles on it. He said the owner took pristine care of the bike. But I noticed he didn't vent his EXTERNAL BREATHERS exhaust. The owner said there was noise coming from the engine so he took the bike in. Everything was OK until Kevin Baxter got everything torn down to the piston arms. The front one had slop in it at the flywheel. My first thought was WOW! I wonder if Kevin and Dwayne saw this before. The pistons were probably slightly out of balance due to excessive carbon build up and over time this possibly caused the slop in the front piston arm. I saw the piston heads in the video and they looked 'caked up' with thick carbon deposits. I imagine at high speeds this could cause some wear after a while (thanks to our friends at the EPA).

    • @DKCustomProducts

    My humble opinion; a big part of the problem is that people running their M8 at too low of an RPM. Your sweet spot is 3,000 RPM. So try and keep your RPM between 2,800 and 3,200.
    Of course venting crankcase oil back into your combustion chamber compounds the problem.

    One thing i noticed is some harley owners (its new to me this year) is having things so back assward when it come to allot of issues.
    External breather causes sumping on a carbed bike???(mines carbed 2000fxdwg) unless you have somehow obstructed your vents. Thats not why someone developed sumping if properly done.
    Mine was easy to vent externally because it was equipped with the old cv carb se filter kit. Its a new to me bike that had domed high comp pistons, had allot of pre ignition issues/and hot starting was brutal, at 220psi ccp no wonder. I have 1000 miles on new flat top pistons, that gave me 185ccp, about 10.2:1 now.
    Way better!
    We will see about the carbon buildup running an external breather.

    Based on your cfm results, looking at the cfm being 'breathed' out (I'm going by the data on your website), is it really worth it to add an external breather to a stock EFI Sportster? Your data for the Sportster was that the cfm 'breathed out' was very small. Thanks for your good work and efforts.

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is true, the typical Sporty will not push as much hot, oily, oxygen depleted air into the combustion chambers as a Twin Cam.
      But a Sporty is still pushing that crap into the engine, and it is just a matter of time before there is enough build up that the tune will no longer match the increased compression.
      ALSO, IMMEDIATELY there is a gain in power from only clean air going into the intake after an EBS is installed on a Sporty.

    I'm running a DK Customs external breather system (EBS) and I noticed that after a few months, my hoses that came with the kit start cracking. I just chuck it up to wear and tear because of how close it is to the engine and exhaust.
    How often does everyone else have to change out their rubber hoses for their EBS?
    ***By no means am I knocking the product. I'm very satisfied with my EBS***

    • @DKCustomProducts

      Hose should not be cracking. I have had EBS hose on a variety of bikes for many years, and 10's of thousands of miles, with no visible degradation. I suspect that the engine is running very hot, and/or the hose is very close to it.
      Another possibility is that there may be some cleaner that you are using that is not rubber friendly.

      Every External Breather System we have is a crankcase vent. The Systems we have prevent 100% of the hot, oily, oxygen depleted air from going into the throttle body and combustion chambers. This extends the life of the engine, gives more power, runs cooler, and prevents tune instability.
      You are probably asking about the vents that have become the fad in the last year that vent at the actual oil tank. With these there is still some hot, oily, oxygen depleted air being fed into the intake & they cost more. It is spending more and getting less benefit.

    I have these breather systems on both my 12 and 13 RKCs and my 18 Ultra LTD. The only real argument against this that I question is the loss of vacuum by routing to a catch can.
    Is this a concern?

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is not.
      The recently circulating theory of needing vacuum from the intake for better ring seal is just that, a theory. No tests or evidence has been posted showing that to be true.
      The holes in the tubes in the intake (and subsequent passageways back to the crank case) are so small that the vacuum created in the intake takes the path of least resistance, pulling in thru the filter element, not the breather tubes.
      btw, I've seen a couple of videos of folks trying to measure that phantom vacuum thru the venting system. They were both honest in disclosing that they could not get any measurable reading

      @@DKCustomProducts - Thanks. I kind of thought this may have been a ghost chase as well. I think with EFI squirting fuel on the intake valve keeps a lot of the carbon build up under control. And when you live in a country that test and inspects every two years installing an external breather is not an option. One place where I think performance builds miss the boat is not making performance parts that can pass emissions testing.

    • @jackklarich7045

      The carbon build up from the oil going thru the throttle body cokes on the top of the pistons. This carbon is harder and more destructive than carbon from burning fossil fuels. Any time a fossil fuel gets burned , carbon is a by product.
      You raise the rate that the carbon will build up by recycling the oil thru the throttle body. It is your ride ,you decide, keeping in mind all the carbon build up over time alters your compression ratio also.

      @@DKCustomProducts If there was a product that would catch the oil before it is passed to the intake that would likely work around restrictions.

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnmitchell9705 Funny you should mention that idea. It is one that we have been working on to accommodate ever tightening regulations.
      Unfortunately, while we can cool down the air before it gets into the intake, and we can filter out the oil before it gets into the intake, we have not been able to figure out how to get oxygen back into the air so that it is a good combustion charge.
      So we have two of the three worked out so far. We have not given up yet. :)

      Yea the government AKA epa only does this crap for money related no that’s all it’s about is money thats all it is and people can’t believe are understand it are both than they say something about it oh it ain’t that much oil but over time it’s more than u can imagine are than it’ll burn off well have you ever burned motor oil well if not do it and see what it looks like and than on top it all if you run to that TB are carb it than creates a Vacuum which is just going to pull that much more

    Not just oxygen depleated air...motor oil is desIgned to be volatility rated meaning resistant to burning so that it can coat cylinder walls and pistons and not burn off and leave dry cylinder/ piston contact. Thus putting that same oily mist into the combustion tract and intake will always lead to buildup of oil based carbon. A bad idea always...vent it externally!

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is one of the many reasons to vent externally!

      Absolutely can be found for less...between locating hoses, clamps, hose connectors, filters or catch-cans, can definitely be made for less, if one does not count their time or fuel for going to different stores. Our External Breather Systems are a convenience item.
