      @The Crusader You've just described cultural suppression. Bro. The European colonist only ever wanted what was best for them, they didn't give a single shit about the African population, which is why they were sold as slaves, transported across the Atlantic where they literally died, and those who managed to stay in Africa didn't have a much better fate.
      They died. Lots of them died, horribly, and brutally. Quit your bullshit, We should be amazed most Africans and Arabs aren't calling for our immediate death.

      Poland never colonized anything :P We weren't under a protectorate, and we didn't get "colonized" (conquered) throughout our history except the Teutonics which we won against anyways and when Prussia (not Germany -_-), Austria (-Hungary) and Russia decided to get our terrain together. We couldn't win, so we remained conquered 123 years but the generations survived and kept the polish culture and it's the same Poles now who live today and lived back then. If you in the first comment mean that Poland colonized Lithuania then sry to tell you that's bullshit... Poland gained a personal union over Lithuania (our monarch gained their throne cuz they had no heir kinda). Something similiar was happening by the Habsburgs

      And cuz our big country was a problem to Russia cuz we blocked their border they decided to corrupt our country with a puppet-king and he simply allowed Russia many things that a normal king wouldn't do like: give them our land in gifts step by step. He was so ridiculous that HE spent so much money on fun for him that he somehow managed to use all the country's money, then debted Poland for the same reason by other countries. Ever heard of a king who debted his country for his fun wishes? Ofc he also didn't do other shit than have fun in his palace, most hated Polish king.

      FREE 3021 you’re an exception, no offense. But Africa has never modernized, nor have they had any sort of golden age, enlightenment, etc. they’re stuck. And it isn’t due to colonization. If anything, the introduction of western civilization has benefitted them.

    • @99999Seb99999
      @99999Seb99999 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Well, the biggest drawback I see in the modern day African continent is their lack of strong institutions (arguably the most important factor of stability and economic growth). During the colonization of Africa, it is no question that European institutions that were imposed on the Africans were better than the institutions that are present in Africa rn. However, the institutions brought in by the Europeans were based off of mercantilist policies (make your own country rich by making all trade in your empire flow to the colonizing country... includes the triangular trade) not based off of the betterment of everyone in the societies they control. I personally see conquering and consequently colonization as a normal part of history that has only come into scrutiny in the modern age, but I do think it is somewhat inaccurate to say that the introduction of westerners in Africa made it better since these colonizers institutionally and systematically kept local colonized populations down while prioritizing the wealth of the colonizer. When a continent has been exploited like that for more than a century, I can see how local strongmen would exploit their African nation in the same, or similar, way that Europeans did with no focus on making institutions for the betterment of society but rather corrupt (in this sense) institutions that put money into the pockets of the strongman and his loyal subjects. Not saying Africa isn’t a mess nor would I blame Europeans for the impoverishment of Africa, but saying that western rule over the African continent made it better is a very complex and nuanced argument that honestly can be made, but I believe that the Europeans cared too much for attaining their own wealth to make any good, lasting change in Africa.

Leopold II killed more people than Hitler, as did the french, million and millions of people dead, European soldiers using black hands as currency in the Congo, the worst crimes ever committed in history, sure there were Romans in North Africa before and they treated the locals as second class, but not like this, Africans were worse than animals, my grandpa has marks of dog bites all over his legs, it was like imagining a scene of a Django movie when he told me the story,
      Africa still has problems today, terrible problems, and those problems are still caused by Europe, 15 African countries don't even control their currencies or trade laws, we re forces to sell resources to the EU however they choose, they are still stealing our resources, only paying the guys at the top to make them work for them, and they use nationalism that they created to keep us separate,

      As far as i know those overseas territories aren't colonies anymore.
      For example, Macao was always Cantonese, while the Falklands are completely British.
      And at last, it was from 1415(Conquest of Ceuta) to 1999(Return of Macao)
      Meanwhile the English Empire only started in 1583 with the foundation of Newfoundland and ended in 1997 with the return of Macao. Even if we included the lasting territories until today, there are still 148 of years that the Portuguese colonial Empire lasted more(as it started 168 years earlier)

Certainly not a protectorate before then as Ireland had its constitution but I don't know what it could be called?

    3:55 Namibian panahandle is shown to have been created in the initial conference, however this was actually gained after the British had seized Rhodesia and the panhandle was a way for the Germans to reach possible river fronts to access the Indian Ocean. This was in exchange for transference of claims to Zanzibar which is still shown highlighted.
    No mention either of the Moroccan crisis during which Kaiser Wilhelm spurred Moroccan independence movements, but was later resolved with the seizure of more land to expand German NeuKamerun.

    Hi! Very good video. Maybe you didn't know but Occidental Sahara is still technically not an independent country. The moment you mention it, you say that Spain left and Morocco took it. That's correct, although it was what happened "practically". Theoretically, Spain under the pressure of the UN to de-colonise Africa, decided to transform the country into a province, just like the Canary Islands. However, when Morocco invaded Spain's province, Spain abandoned them (they were Spanish CITIZENS) and they let them become invaded. Since no independence referendum was ever carried, it is still considered a non-independent country.
