I've always wondered about that too. A Japanese company making a game about an OP American plane single-handedly wiping out the entire Japanese air force and navy? How did they even manage to sell this game?
The Arcade taught me a lot about history. This game here shows us how one intrepid P52 Mustang sank most of the Japanese Fleet at Midway. The cat laser weapon, that was classified.

The most contradictory thing about this game is that 1943 is a game created by the Japanese that exalts one of the greatest defeats of the Japanese navy in all times. This proves that in 1987, the year the game was created, the trauma of the 2nd World War had already been overcome, and, even at that time, relations between the United States and Japan were already very friendly.

Your aircraft carrier gets taken out at the start? Holy @$!# that makes it ten times more heroic. I only played the NES version so where that detail wasn't added.
That's most likely because the NES version also took elements from 1943 Kai, a Japanese enhanced edition of this game. In that version, the ship doesn't sink, and it's far more similar to the Famicom counterpart than the one seen here. Also, nice fennec fox PFP :3

People are shocked that Japan antagonized themselves? I don't see why not. The country is a million times better nowadays than it was in the dark times of the 1930s and early 40s. That's like saying Germans and Italians had to like Mussolini and Hitler. Plus, only 1/36 of Japan fought in WWII. That's a lot of room for disagreement. Anyways, it is a good one. Japanese games are my favorites. :)
Japan is a lot more wishy-washy about WWII compared to Germany and Italy, to my knowledge, all Japanese kids learn about WWII in school is "We were saving everybody from the Western colonists, America got mad and nuked us, and we totally didn't kill millions of innocent people in the process". No mention of the Nanking Massacre, the Holocaust, or anything. Heck, most Japanese don't even know who the Nazis were. In fact, according to the game's designer, the studio received several complaints from Japanese conservative groups stating that the game was an affront to the souls of the soldiers who served in the war.

[Verse 1]
After the turn of the century
In the clear blue skies over Germany
Came a roar and a thunder men had never heard
Like the screamin' sound of a big war bird
[Verse 2]
Up in the sky, a man in a plane
Baron von Richthofen was his name
Eighty men tried, and eighty men died
Now, they're buried together on the countryside
[Chorus]
Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more
The Bloody Red Baron was rollin' up the score
Eighty men died tryin' to end that spree
Of the Bloody Red Baron of Germany
[Verse 3]
In the nick of time, a hero arose
A funny-lookin' dog with a big black nose
He flew into the sky to seek revenge
But the Baron shot him down (Curses, foiled again!)
[Chorus]
Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more
The Bloody Red Baron was rollin' up the score
Eighty men died tryin' to end that spree
Of the Bloody Red Baron of Germany
[Verse 4]
Now, Snoopy had swore that he'd get that man
So he asked the Great Pumpkin for a new battle plan
He challenged the German to a real dogfight
While the Baron was laughin', he got him in his sight
[Musical Interlude]
[Verse 5]
That Bloody Red Baron was in a fix
He tried everything, but he'd run out of tricks
Snoopy fired once, and he fired twice
And that Bloody Red Baron went spinnin' out of sight
[Chorus]
Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more
The Bloody Red Baron was rollin' up the score
Eighty men died tryin' to end that spree
Of the Bloody Red Baron of Germany
[Outro]
Well, ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more
The Bloody Red Baron was rollin' up the score
over germany, isnt this the pacific?
