  • This Cooper's Hawk was hanging out on the roof of an apartment building across the street from me before it attacked some birds in flight. Notice the two-toned color on the head. That's one way to distinguish between Cooper's Hawks and Sharp-shinned Hawks. Cooper's have a pale nape while Sharp-shinneds have a dark nape that connects to the back.
    Fun fact: Male Cooper’s Hawks are submissive to females because females are significantly larger than males (and they eat medium-sized birds). Males build the nest then provide all of the food to the mother and babies for 90 days until the young fledge.
