- I certainly didn't expect this past week to go like this!
I knew we had wanted to re-surface our deck this spring/summer, but I didn't really think it was going to start this soon. What was supposed to be a fairly straightforward re-surfacing of the deck has turned into a bit of a nightmare. An accidental fire on our deck last summer literally put the fire under our butts to get this deck done this year, rather than put it off for another season or two, so I am a true believer that things happen (or don't happen) for a reason. I don't think this whole deck would have lasted another season.
And things get worse.
Thanks for watching. I guess this is my life and project for the next month, or two, or three ...
One thing I've learned over the years is that when you can finally SEE the rot on a deck, its already too late. On the bright side, we get a house rescue/deck building series now! You're incredible Michelle, keep up the great work!

There’s two types of contractors in the world
1st type - don’t care if it’s on the print or not just want to get done and paid
2nd type- treat the home as they were building it for their parents- follow best building practices regardless of time or expense and converse with homeowners regarding potential problems

Wow....!! Big project. Actually that fire was a good thing, since it eventually made you aware of the extent of water damage that was being done to the house. Knowing how you give so much though to that I'm sure you will resolve those issues in your normally excellent way. So, you have plenty to keep you unexpectedly busy for most of this summer.

Welcome to the world of a remodeling or handyman contractor. Im a licensed remodeling contractor in Northern AZ, and I run into this stuff on a daily basis. And we have a much dryer climate per se than you do. Most of our moisture occurs in the winter months in the form of snow. But it never ceases to amaze me, how often I run into a scenario like yours. I feel for you guys, I really do. Its so heart breaking (and bank breaking) for a homeowner, when they see this unexpected damage. Especially to log and timber type homes. We see these huge pieces of wood on our homes, and assume they are doing just fine. Until you start a project like this. Well, Michelle and Steve, I sincerely hope this scenario doesnt hit you too hard. The sad fact is, that it is what it is, and it has to be dealt with. Make sure the repairs are being done correctly and properly, and soon you will be able to go on with your adventurous lives, and put this behind you!

Not to criticize, but when greasing an excavator, you should place the excavator in transport position, curl the bucket all the way in, and fold the stick under towards the boom as far as it can go then lower to the ground, this will allow easy access to the upper grease nipples without using a ladder, once done place boom and stick at 90 degrees with bucket open and flat on the ground (so the back side of the bucket is on the ground and from seated position you are looking into the bucket), this will allow easy access to remaining nipples, a good tip to remember is in all greasing positions avoid putting pressure on the implements as will cause pins to push against the inner bosses making it much harder to accept grease. Rule of thumb is, if machine is working, grease every 8 hours or daily, I always made a habit of greasing every morning while machine warmed up. I was an operator since 1973, just some helpful advice, really enjoy your videos, thanks for sharing!

Just think though Mich, to a normal person this would have been an expensive disaster. In fact they probably would only have noticed something was up once somebody had got hurt by a collapse. For you, it’s a pain in the ass but you can fix it and fix it better than it was before. You’re an amazing and resourceful woman. Hats off to you. Well done x😊
My sentiments exactly. Sometimes, the universe creates an event that forces us to redirect our attention. It makes us look deeper when and where we are not looking at all. Problems like these are blessings in disguise. 😊
What a nightmare, I know exactly what is happening. I just spent a month repairing rot. Not a fun job but nessesary to save what you can .good luck with the repair and be safe.

That's some Bad luck you got there! Good job you're sorting it now before it affects the rest of the house! (Also before the whole deck collapsed! Could have been a nasty accident at some point!)

Michelle You will now have a deck that will last much longer. Details can really make a huge difference. Waterproofing, tar paper, flashing and whatnot. Stay positive.

Good video can’t wait for part two. I had to rebuild my deck that lasted 26 years so can’t complain. I used cedar posts and pressure treated lumber and composite deck and a lot of waterproofing tape. Lots of new deck hardware options now. Good luck. Hope your friends had a good party on your deck!😂

I have been able to successfully clean out clogged Grease fittings with a propane Torch. Warm it up and you gotta be careful Handling it. Use leather gloves and then hook up your grease gun and put some pressure on it and normally it'll push the hard chunk right out.

Have been in my home 40 years and over the last 10 things have started showing up periodically that need work. I'm 70 and just last year resealed and painting the outside. Don't know many guys that would not hire a crew an just dive in like your are doing. While your able and have the will power just keep going. You are doing a great job taking care of the dogs and house and home.
I understand completely. I have dealt with wooden deck problems for many years. So I finally went to other materials that are much more resistant to water damage.
You're lucky that you caught it when you did! I've seen similar decks (improperly installed as well) totally calapse! So it's great that you avoided such a catastrophe. I got a kick out of your expression as you popped the beverage can! Priceless!

Good that you caught this early. If the deck had collapsed with a few people (a load) on it, could have been a tragedy. Criminal that the original deck builder did no water entry protection. The house interface area looks fixable though, and you'll be keeping a real close eye on weatherproofing the new construction. Cheers!

Ah, the joys of home ownership! I had a little drip in the basement from what appeared to be the joint of a pipe to the bathtub, like a drop or two a day, so put off re-sweating the pipes for years. When I finally decided to tackle that issue and started pulling the insulation down from the ceiling I discovered there was nothing wrong with the pipe at all, instead the grout of the bathroom tile had gone bad and for all those years (and, no doubt, many before I bought the house) water had been leaking into the walls and soaking into the insulation. Man, what a mess! And the only bathroom in the house out of commission for a week.
... OMG ... That meal time was amazing ,, the dogs were so in tune with your direction .. made me get the " feels' for your care and love for your dogs , and their buddies ... Michy , You are the best ....

There is a tool available to clean out or to un stick the zerk fittings also brake cleaner helps to clean out a clogged endalong with a pic tool … also there are ASE and METRIC threaded zerks … I hope this helps a little …. Stay Safe 🙋🏼♂️🇺🇸👊🏼👊🏼🔨🪚
Also heat via propane torch. This is what I see used on car brakes, etc.
If you are talking about the tools that you fill with grease , put on the zerk and hammer , yes they work most of the time . And I have seen it put enough hydraulic pressure to blow the fitting right out. I've quit using them
As far as using a propane torch, with caution it may do the trick . But there is a reason that it's against the law to use one on any brake parts, and can get you sued for everything you will ever have
I usually just pull the zerk and clean it . Replace if cannot get freed up

Growing up in Canada I never heard of a grease fitting called anything but a nipple, here in the states they thought that was hilarious, everyone here calls them zerk fittings.

Change out the nipple on the fitting you were trying to clean on camera. It unscrews for replacement!

We used to boil the blocked grease nipples, as they are called in the UK. In a tin can. Just test them before refitting. Great vids Michy. Sometimes you can use one nipple to grease them all then put the old ones back until you get some replacements.

I started a reno business about ten years ago but couldn't make any money. Almost nobody would pay for quality workmanship. What happened to that deck and house is typical of the workmanship of most contractors.
To be fair, there are many other costs to building, especially the amount of training, certifications and safety PPE and rules (yes, safetyism is a thing) that contribute little or nothing to the actual outcome of the project. Profit margins are down around 3%, at least here in Canada, so anything that can be done to cut costs is.
Unfortunately, this is the result. It's a shame because it wouldn't be that much more to build it correctly, especially for a high-end home like Michelle and Steve's.
Still, it's great to watch someone work with so much effort and diligence!

The contractor that built the deck should be ashamed of his workmanship. Water is the enemy of all construction, the damage water can do in a short time and over time is crazy. Good tear down, now for the proper rebuild. The benefit is you know it will be done correctly.
All vertical wood has to have a slight angle on top, so there is no standing water causing rot. That's what we did at power company.
