I went to a taco bell in mall with my boyfriend on a date before the movies. (He's not cheap, I just have an unnatural love for taco bell lol) We had like an hr before our movie, so no rush at all, was just going to sit in the food court, hang out and eat for that hr.
I guess they had a lot of business before hand, before they had NO meat ready lol. Guy told us it would be about 10 minutes. He was very apologetic, and I told him no big deal, just means we will get fresh arse meat! 😁
We went to sit down and wait, the guy said he'd bring it to us. I guess someone else complained, because he came up to us with our food and free coupons and very apologetic while we tried to assure him we weren't mad at all, pretty happy actually, he did nothing wrong, and we really didn't need the free coupons. He insisted we take them anyways for being so sweet. I hope we made his night better after that, he seemed pretty stressed before hand.

I work in a deli and some of our combos are actually supposed to be a very specific weight, I had a customer come in once who is complaining that I did not give her the appropriate amount of food in her meal, saying that I hadn't given her enough, now I could tell right now she was just trying to get more for her the amount she did so I grabbed her order and I placed it on the scale and when I saw what came back I smiled. "You are absolutely correct madam. The wrong amount of food has been placed in this meal. We are supposed to put in (such and such weight), however this meal has been given 0.25 lb more than it's supposed to have, if you would like I would gladly correct that for you" I smiled to her as I told her this, she continued to frown but took her order back without another word...

Employees usually do not quit the company, they quit the manager.

    • @Rhaenarys
      @Rhaenarys ปีที่แล้ว +5

Eh, usually. I did have the rare case where I didn't hate the manager, but it was def corporate that made me want to quit. Granted, my manager started my resentment, but she was following corporates orders. It began when I asked about a raise...after being there for 2 yrs, longer than 99% of the staff. Yet paid just as much. I even trained that 99%, which included my GM to an extent.
Then corporate came in and pretty much made my decision by what they said. For scenery context, this was a popular burger joint om a business strip filled with fast food and sit down restaurants. And...I had already worked at almost all of the sit downs.
Corporate came in trying to sell the idea that we already knew was false that this was such a great place to work, with so many opportunities to make more money (through secret shoppers. That were beyond picky for the already high standards they had). Then she said the damnable sentence for me : Name one place on this road where you'll make more.
Lol it honestly took me everything to keep my mouth shut as I thought...literally every single dine in on this strip...and that BEFORE the min wage raises. Which...servers didn't really get raises anyways through all of that. But...yea. That was my final moment of: screw this place. I'm going to find a better job lol. Granted, it was a district manager that said that, it was a bunch of little bs things from corporate altogether that pushed me away.

As soon as he walked in the store, he stared at each cashier, service desk person and floor associate. One of the cashiers said she had to check and see if she was fully clothed he stared so much. So one day when he came into the store, we all stared at him from the time he walked in the store, until he left. He was so shook, he put his head down and walked out of the store. Love this one but some at high end hotels can be stuck up as hell. I went to a con once booked on my parents card paid entirely in points that were about to expire since they remodeled the house the year before. I was in a long freaking line for check in when I saw a desk agent with no one in her line with an hhonors sign above her. Not sure if she was just for tickets to shows or what I call out, "do you do check ins?" She responded, "I only work with hhonors members" so I say "yes I know but can you do check ins" she says again, "this desk I for honor members only this gone on through 3 more rounds with different phrasing with her never confirming that she did check ins so I say, "I get you only do honor members but can you check honor members in do you have that capability?" She rolled her eyes and said yes. So I jump out of line and go to her desk and pull out the credit card attached to it she begrudgingly checked me in then was speechless my parent had hit top their of there rewards system meaning my group go access to he top floor that over looked the city free all you can drink sodas breakfast in the morning and finger foods we were sure to demolish for lunch everyday. I never had top status again but the next year I went to the hhonors desk and asked what happed to the stuck up girl from last year and told them what happen they bumped me to the top floor access again. Did not make a complaint but apparently somone else had between cons and the girl from the previous year was fired for being judgey of the wrong person who did complain.

My worst experience dealing with customers was when I worked tech support in a call center for a US cable/internet/phone company that name rhymes with Carter Communications.
One early morning a customer I will call Karen called inquiring about a credit of $0.03 that was put on her bill. There was no notes on the account or credit as to why it was applied, but it looked like the credit was for the utility taxes. I tried to explain to Karen why the credit was there but she could not understand what a credit was and could not understand why her bill was not the normal $75.00 but instead $74.97
I explained it to her three times before I just said that unfortunately I was not able to explain it better and that all mattered is that her bill this month was $74.97 and not her usual $75.00 and that next month it should be the usual $75.00
She thanked me, and hung up. At that moment I had to go the washroom so I left my desk. When I came back I had to go back into Karen's account to put my notes on, and that is when I saw notes saying that Karen had called back immediately and was complaining about me. Karen was claiming that I was rude, aggressive, cursed the whole time and called her every foul/racist word she could think of.
I told my supervisor what was happening and he told me to put a very detailed note on the account while he contacted the supervisor that Karen was currently speaking to as my supervisor just happened to sit less then 10 feet away and it was a quiet morning that day so he heard everything.
I later found out that Karen had done this many times before where she would call in about some random tiny issue, have a normal call with an agent, and then call back later to complain about them being rude/swearing/racist/etc. towards her . Then she would demand $50 off her bill and be given it. So because her call with me was recorded and witnessed by a supervisor, her lies got exposed and she was no longer able to call the general support/billing/sales numbers and instead had to deal with the corporate escalations team only for anything. Within about 2 weeks of lying about her call with me corporate disconnected all of Karen's services and blacklisted her due to her constant lies, harassment and threats.

    • @russlehman2070

I'm going to make some guesses here. I'm guessing that the transaction went something like this: You rang up a total of $17.50 (amounts are for illustration), he handed you a twenty, which you keyed into the register, which displayed change as $2.50. So you handed him $2.50. When he complained, you counted out, "One, two, two twenty-five, two fifty". I'm guessing this was a fairly old guy, who expected you to count out change the way it was normally done in the dark ages of stone knives, bearskins, and mechanical cash registers that didn't calculate the change for the cashier. This was to count up, starting from the purchase total, as you handed him the change, until you reached the total that he gave you, e.g., your would count it out, "Seventeen seventy-five, eighteen, nineteen, twenty." This was a fast and accurate way to make change when the machines didn't calculate it for you, but it's pretty much a lost art now.

When I learned how to give back change over twenty years ago, I learned on a machine that did not say the change due. This required counting back from the amount due which would go something like this, if the total came to 3.75 and the customer pays with a twenty, you take a quarter equaling 4, then a dollar equaling 5 then a five equaling ten then a ten equaling twenty and you say to the customer while handing the .25,"4", hand the dollar and say five then hand the five and say ten and then hand the ten and say twenty. All the while the money is being counted out and accounted for by both cashier and customer. Handing the coins before the paper also insures the coins from slipping off the paper cash and onto the floor. Now that registers tell the change due, many younger people seem to hand over a wad of paper money with coins on top and they often fall to the floor.

I worked at a small theatre for a while and could definitely tell stories. This particular story reminds me of one incident where a group of young teens came in to a 14a movie (don't remember which one). As the usher who took tickets to let people in after they were bought, i could ask about ages and I asked the group because at least one looked underage and quickly found out that only one was 14. To be clear, if you are under 14 you need an 18+ adult with you, not someone who is 14, which may be what these kids thought.
When I explained this, there were some grumbles but most understood. However, one girl absolutely started going off at me. since fining this sub I think of her as a karen in training. she was only about 11 an blonde, though chin length hair. she screamed every excuse under the sun at me and i explained several times that now that i know I legally couldn't let them in. eventually i told her that she had a problem with the policy she could talk to the manager. so she went to the office... and started going off at the manager. neeldess to say the kids still didnt get in and she was banned.

In regards to the Eye Contact story: (apologies for the verbosity)
I work at a hotel. I do my best to try and check people in and out as quickly as possible most of the time (sometimes both myself and the guest are in a talkative mood, so I'll take my sweet time then XD). Part of my speed is contingent upon placing a guest's ID and Card on the counter within easy reach of the guest so I can get both hands back on the keyboard and mouse.
Only once has this ever backfired.
I was doing my usual speedy check in when the guest (a woman) suddenly interrupted and asked what I was doing. I gave a confused look and when I made eye contact she said, "I didn't place my things on the counter when I was handing them to YOU. I expect you to put them back into MY HANDS."
Being a good (and smart) employee I just cocked an eyebrow, picked up her things, and placed them in her hand with a sickly sweet southern "Sorry about that ma'am." while proceeding to give her the slowest check in I possibly could without being TOO obvious about how purposeful it was. The growing look of consternation on her face was glorious.
Funny thing, modern technology. It can be working so smoothly until it just doesn't...

Eye contact guy needs a small lesson on people with autism (I know... OP isnt autistic). Often we have a great deal of trouble maintaining eye contact. It's not that we're inattentive or trying to be rude. Its simply a symptom many of us have. Forcing eye contact disturbs us & is anxiety inducing. For myself, I'm also self conscious about my crossed eye.
The lesson: dont impose your expectations on other people - they may well be unable to comply due to circumstances they no control over & aren't required to share with you!

I said it before on a different channel that did this same story. My sons both have adhd, my daughter has atypical adhd, social anxiety, general anxiety disorder and was being tested for autism ( the psychology/behavioral health clinic we went to closed all their clinics statewide, rather suddenly) We all find eye contact during conversation quite uncomfortable. I’m currently working retail (bills and I like having electricity and running water and food) since being denied for disability again. I find myself fiddling with the bags, straightening the checkout area, messing around with the register - all to avoid prolonged eye contact with customers. I manage enough small talk to get compliments about how much friendlier our store is now, but bbrrrrr sometimes it sets my nerves on edge just trying to get through my shift. And no, I’m not officially diagnosed with anything but our family was always the weird quiet, shy, but very smart kids 🙃

That's what I was thinking, too. OP might not be on the spectrum, but when people complain about lack of eye contact, they're more than likely, if it is a legit issue, complaining because someone on the spectrum is working...and they don't feel comfortable. I wish people would gain some dang self awareness in the sense of realizing not everyone is like them, and some have legit disabilities that makes simple things like eye contact feel like torture.

That's why Sweden is such a great country to live in for neuro atypical people. Personal integrity is so important for a swede, you can just do your own thing. I've never heard anyone complain about not giving eye contact. The only time it's been brought up is with professionals or family to help me.
I will note that OP managed to maintain eye contact for the entire exchange. I don't know about you but I wouldn't have been able to do it, and I'm pretty good about that stuff normally (if I make an effort). Can you even imagine staring at someone for that long? It sends a shiver down my spine.

I said give me his details and I'll send him a copy of my deeds that clearly show that I'm responsible for the fence on the other side, not the one between us. Had a woman the other day that came into our store and pretty much blamed everyone that her house got robbed. Her exact words were, "all the men that work here were born idiots" all because she couldn't return a $50 item due to no receipt and that she "turned all her cards in" whatever that means. After she basically called me an idiot, I told her she didn't need to be rude and then she said I was rude first, when I was just trying to help her demanding self. So I told her that we are a business and her personal problems aren't our fault. Honestly when she called me an idiot I should have said "well at least I know what homeowners insurance is". Another customer who heard me tell her that her problems aren't our fault basically congratulated me. I'm a 6'4, 360 lb 32 year old guy with asperger's disorder. I don't like confrontation but I also am not going to just take being insulted. That's Honestly the first time I've ever said something like that to a customer because I can take alot but it's also the first in my 6 years of retail that I've been insulted. Both as an employee and my gender. I'm also a small business owner too so I refuse to take that kind of treatment. I'm just glad it was me. By eighth grade graduation they were shaving and taller than most of their teachers - the male teachers. After several encounters, I made them carry their school id cards with them when we went out. And in a weird twist, once they reached 15 or so, their faces seemed to freeze in time until after they turned 30ish. To be fair, we weren't rich, and eating out was a rare treat, but when my brother was a preteen, and I was a teen, my mom would say I was also a preteen, and it worked because I, sadly, looked younger than my younger brother. I mean, it saved us a bit, since the adult prices were almost double the kids prices. Oddly enough, my brother also ate a heck of a lot more than I did. In later years, it was awkward, because when I was of drinking age, but he wasn't, I would always get carded, and he didn't, when we went out with friends. I got teased a lot about that, and one time I was so annoyed that I just made my brother pay for my drink, since he had an apparent privilege I didn't have. This was decades ago, btw, before places got much stricter about checking ID.

The Restaurant story… I can relate. I had to call out (no one ever is willing to cover the front end shifts), but I told my boss I would be stopping by with a doctors note due to muscle issues related to my pregnancy (later found out I was dealing with preeclampsia- can be deadly to both baby and myself). The day I was cleared to be back at work I figured out that my manager never passed on my call out message to the store manager, and she called me to the back- Just an unused booth- and went in to a one sided conversation about being respectful and responsible enough and that turning my phone off (doc and husband had told me to rest) and not returning calls was not acceptable. Also, I needed to be clocked in at the Lunch time not an hour passed which was my hired time due to kids and husband so someone always being home. Anyway, she was mad about not being notified. I old her I had come in with a doctors note, left it with my manager, and I was bringing her my other copy today, but I have limited movement (arm, and wrist were both wrapped to prevent pain from movement), and I needed to actually be moving because I was going stir crazy. She then went on another tangent about no call no show, (again I had called) and that I was going to be coming in at the dinner time schedule from now on…. I told her, no. I won’t have a sitter, and I also refused to work on the days I was guaranteed off when I was hired. Those were the days I actually got to spend with my husband. As it was I was running out the door as soon as he walked in no time to say goodbye, as his job was the bread winning and it was a 7am to 4pm job. Kids were too young for staying alone and we were going to be dealing with him being deployed in 8months. Plus By the time I would get home he was asleep, to be back up for an hour drive into work. She then told me that after reviewing everything and deciding what to not put in my folder I was still going to have to sign my write up. I was told i needed to remember that my job was more important than my Married family and I was not allowed to use my Home as an excuse. She sent me home, and I wrote the District Manager, related my meeting and told him, I was quitting because I was told that my Work Family was more important than my home family and that I needed to be more available than my regular M-F 5-close shifts with one of those days off, and I worked either Saturday or Sunday (not both) Open to Close.
I never went back. When I quit I was 6-8 months pregnant with my 3rd child and the week before I also had dealt with a very rude and entitled guest who had been tough and put a huge strain on me. About a month after I quit, we were just weeks from our due date…. I lost my 3rd baby.
I don’t want sympathy, this was 11 years ago. I now have a total of 4 beautiful children
But, I learned that you should always keep a second copy of Doctor notes and always keep notes of phone calls and who you talk with and the times, so that you have a paper trail even if it’s only on your end.

Although I've heard the "logic" behind wanting eye contact, I just don't get why some people deem it necessary. Eye contact is not necessary for effective communication. Lack of eye contact doesn't always mean that the person isn't listening, isn't paying attention or lying. For some, like myself, it can be uncomfortable at best and physically painful at worst. Although it doesn't happen often, there have been times where I couldn't even look at the other person's face at all, let alone make eye contact, due to the pain it caused me. Often, I still attempt to make eye contact when I'm at work, as it's actually in the employee guidebook, despite causing me a lot of discomfort and sensory issues and it's just so difficult, only because I don't want people to think that I'm being rude.

My brother worked at a chain restaurant famous for flying cow like creatures. The head manager was certifiably insane. That isn't an insult, I literally mean the women was a few decks short of a card. She was an extremely hard worker, saving grace right? yeah nope. Being a hard worker means nothing if you are completely and utterly incompetent and constantly make more work for everyone around you. One example of her crazy was the spice rack. This restaurant, like many chains I would imagine, has a standard setup for their kitchens so that if an employee transfers to a new place they don't have to relearn where everything is. This women would *on a daily basis* go to the spice rack, scream (yes scream, I don't mean that figuratively, I mean at the top of her lungs full on screaming) about how 'someone changed it again'. She would then proceed to rearrange it claiming 'that was how it was always supposed to be.'
Well, she also had 'the right way' for everything which was never the way corporate stated. 'Her way' always took longer and didn't work as well as the way a person with common sense would do it but she'd start screaming if things weren't done her way.
Now my brother does not like bullies. This woman, being the kind who had a, possibly legitimately pathological aversion to admitting she was wrong was definitely a bully. He also won't admit fault for things he didn't do. The last straw was once he was cooking and she came in and yelled that he got an order wrong. He pointed to the plate and the order still on the screen and said, 'no I didn't, it says right there to make what's on the plate. If the order is wrong, its the server who screwed up.' She took him into her office and screamed for 15 minutes. Than ordered him to sign a writeup stating that not only did he get an order wrong, but was extremely insubordinate and rude to her when she called him out. He refused to sign of course and wrote his side of the incident on the section for why he refused.
He quit a week later so she wouldn't be able to fire him and moved on.
Now, you're probably wondering how someone so far gone could possibly be the head manager of anything. Well a month after he quit I was in there to get some wings and saw all new management. I came to find out that she and been fired. All the people I spoke to knew was that it was for, 'going against company policy' which, could literally mean anything since she did that constantly. There was a rummer that she only got the head manager position because she was sleeping with the district manager. It was only a rummer but given that *he* was fired the same day *she* was...make of that what you will. My brother was called and offered his old job back but was quite happy in his new role so he declined with thanks for the offer.

Fluff love your reading style and hope stevo is getting his required breaks. Story 1 I have my own kind of almost malicious compliance. When I was an awkward teen probably 15 /16 My younger brother and I were going to dance lessons (tango, waltz, etc) which I loved (death before disco) one evening I was dancing with one of the older female instructors and being self-conscious I didn't look at her in the eye however she commented it was good manners to look at your partner in the eyes. So I complied using my "look through walls" kind of stares and didn't break eye contact from that point in she lasted about a minute before she looked away.

      @realulli ปีที่แล้ว +2

You're the man. It's nice to have eye contact, but every once in a while, you have to look elsewhere to avoid collisions. Also, competition ballroom dancing requires you to have your head in a certain position and smile all the time. The position, IIRC, pretty much eliminates any chance of looking in the eye...

Last story hit home.while trying to get an early flight ahead of some rough weather out ofWashington DC I was behind what seemed like that same guy demanding a seat on the same flight I was trying to get on. He was rude, crude and socially nasty. After the ticket agent had had enough and got her manager and had the guy stand-off to the side. I presented my ticket and very heavy tool case for her to check in. I warned her that it was heavy and I would be happy to put it on the belt for her. This was pre 911.
She said thank you and I said I was trying to get out early on the flight to Chicago but since I was standing there for the previous encounter I said not much chance of that. She smiled and said she appreciated my offer of the very heavy case and she had one seat in First Class available that she could put me in.
I like to think the other guy was doing the fish mouth!

    • @realulli
      @realulli ปีที่แล้ว

And first class has much higher baggage weight limits. (I think like double that of coach). So, the heavy tool case would probably have cost you a bundle, while in coach it was free... ;-))

I used to work in Ladies Apparel at KMart. Women would repeatedly hit the bell to call me to let them into the dressing room, while FACING the dressing room. So they wouldn't see me coming. I would walk up directly behind them and say, CAN I HELP YOU? They would practically jump out of their skin. Very satisfying.

This is sort of similar to the first story. My first job was for a phone service, let's call it Spider. I really wanted to make a good impression in my first job so I took notes on all my duties and studied info about the phones I'd be selling so i could better help customers and improve myself. I even started asking family and friends about signing on for their service. I was only there for a week and my manager and teammates were happy with my work and I'd even been trusted to be a key holder on my fifth day working there. The end of my second week a higher up in the company called a meeting for all new hires in the area and as I wanted to do well I took notes on everything he said during the meeting and even asked some questions of my own when prompted. The next day of work after the meeting my manager sadly tells me that it would be my last day with the company. When I asked why I was being let go her response was that the higher up said I didn't look like I was paying enough attention during his meeting. It did give me a bit of satisfaction though when I later heard that that location kept having problems with staff stealing from it.

"You're not paying enough attention to me! You're only writing down everything I say!"
Too bad you didn't whip our your notes, right then, and say, "I was literally writing down everything he said. See? He said, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, and Y. I was expecting a Z, but he missed that, for some reason. But somehow, catching ALL of that is not paying enough attention to him? Oh, no! Did he say Z, after all? And I missed it?!"
"Well, no, he didn't. But, sorry, he just felt like you weren't paying enough attention."
"Hmmm, maybe I should sue for wrongful termination, since I can PROVE that I DID pay attention, and any judge will find for me. His imagination does not change the FACTS that I WAS paying excellent attention, the whole time, and can prove it in a court of law."
"But, you didn't maintain enough eye contact."
"If I had stared at him, 1) he would have been uncomfortable, and 2) I wouldn't have been able to remember everything he said, because I wouldn't have been able to take notes. Would he REALLY prefer that we make him uncomfortable, while forgetting half of the things he says? Again, WRONGFUL TERMINATION."
Don't threaten with a lawyer, though. Just go ahead and press the claim with the Dept. of Labor.
I'm not surprised people stole from them. They were getting their revenge against the jackasses, who made their life more difficult than it needed to be.

So I've had people complain about me because:
My hair is to long, 3.5 foot long twin-tails, that I asked a kid not to play with.
To young to work anywhere. I'm super short, and perpetually mistaken for 12-13.
People have made comments my chest makes their daughter feel uncomfortable. Sorry I guess?
I'm apparently useless because it took a few minutes to grab a ladder, curse of being short lol.
But neck cramps be damned, never had anyone complain I didn't make enough eye contact, that's a new one.

The first story, about employee got in trouble with the boss for something that was just nonsense? Yep, something similar happened to me over 20 years ago. This was just before a new generation of medical computer software made this job easier. I was entering a patient’s medical billing information into the computer and realized that there were two patients with the same name and address, but one was 20 years older than the other (it turned out it was mother and daughter, living together and having the same name). The problem was the medical provider hadn’t included her Social Security number, and I needed it to make sure the billing went to the correct patient.
I placed a call to the clinic involved, and told the receptionist I needed to speak to their billing department and why. She transferred me and a woman answered. I identified myself and why I was calling, and her response was “How did you get my number?” I said “I didn’t ask for your number. I just told the clinic reception that I need to talk to Billing, and she put me through to you.”
“Well, this is NOT the billing dept.! I’m the accountant. I’m not supposed to be disturbed. What’s your name and who is your supervisor?” I gave her my name and supervisor’s name and number and then asked her if I should just hang up and call the clinic again. “No, I can transfer you over to billing. Just don’t call me again.”
After getting the information I needed from the actual billing department, my coworkers sitting close by all wanted to know what that was all about, so I told them.
About 15 minutes later in came our supervisor; I received a reprimand for calling and disturbing that accountant. My coworkers were stunned, as was I. They told the supervisor I was never out of line, very polite, and it wasn’t my fault that the clinic switchboard connected me to the wrong office. Didn’t matter. If a client (even an entitled b****) complained, the employee got written up, even if there was no real fault. This was corporate policy.
This was the only big corporation I ever worked for, and I don’t recommend it. Corporations are all meaningless phrases (“Our employees are our biggest asset”) and soulless rules.

Story 2, can confirm that absolutely happens. I remember almost exactly that kind of thing happening once, but back then the adult decided to "switch" to a PG-13 movie instead of an R. We ended up asking the kids to leave when they snuck into the R-rated film, but that was after my shift ended so I didn't get to see the adult's reaction.

Oh, entitled managers are the worst! I worked for Lerner back in the day and I was there when we were having a sidewalk sale. Now, anyone who has ever been in a mall during a sidewalk sale knows that there is NO WAY of keeping things straight all the time, especially when it's a pile of purses on a flat table. I did my best, but the district manager was there and apparently that wasn't good enough. She actually yelled at me in front of customers, then said that I could "either stay and conform, or get my purse and leave." Don't ever say something like that to an Aries. I hope she had fun keeping that table straight. :)
