    Written by Manyovani and Artie Lange as Tony Trapani (Manyovani). It became a hit for a singer named David Whitfield in 1941.

    • @ptournas
      @ptournas 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was actually a hit for David Whitfield in 1954 when it was #1 for ten weeks in the UK and also #10 in the US charts.
      Mantovani also had his own hit albums as a conductor of his own orchestra in the UK. In 1959 he had 6 albums in the top 30 US charts at the same time. I remember my mother had several Mantovani albums back then.

    Jay Black (real name David Blatt, of Brooklyn, NY), was trained as a Cantor, one who,leads the Jewish congregation in prayers in a synagogue. The training is the same as that of an opera singer. I had seen Jay Black in person twice; the first time, in the Catskills at The Concord Hotel, and the second time in 2007 at a Thursday night concert in Coney Island, Brooklyn. He was still able to hit those high notes, even then. RIP Jay Black.

I was amazed at the operatic quality of his voice, even though I heard it all the time back in the day. I think most of us who knew this music when we were young (I’m 77) took it’s wonderful quality for granted because there wasn’t anything to compare it to.

      If you know your stuff, and many of us Boomers do, you already know that the child wonder impresario TJ Labinsky did not hire or use cover bands for his legendary PBS Specials. TJ was recording groups and singers for posterity. TJ was a kid, but he knew more about "our" Boomer music than anyone on that stage. He knew Jay Black. He knew Kenny Vance. TJ begged as many Original Groups as he could dig up to become a part of his recording mission. Good for us mere mortals, damn good.

    Another singer was Jackie Wilson aka Mr. Entertainment. You would love his songs like: "Lonely Teardrops" and "Night."

    Jay Black was amazing. Sebastian Bach could carry a high note for a long beat as well. Great reaction.

    First, I want to say that Jay Black passed away in 2021. I also want to say that he was still singing and hitting those high notes ten years ago. I should have sent you the link of him in a PBS Special holding that note real long. He even looks at his watch marking how long he can hold that first note. This man still sounds as good as he did in that video you just watched.

    Heard him many times. Played often at a mob restaurant I use to bus tables at in high school. Really great guy and smart ass. But he was great in person as he was recorded. Liked to do franki Valli covers to see who was better.
