It's one thing labelling all the wires (if you can) so that you know where they go, and a whole different ball game trying to remember how to get them there. Good luck and best wishes.

Wow Ryan I comment on here most weeks about the fantastic job that you have been doing regarding the fabrication and welding work that you have done on this as well as the other vehicles on your uploads but the stripping out of the remaining parts along with all of that wiring is something else ,there must be times when you must feel like you wish you had,nt bothered it must be an absolute nightmare. I for one would have passed it up (not that I have the skills) a long time ago. However the fact that you continue to persevere is testament to your professionalism and craftsmanship to which I and your other viewers I,m sure really appreciate

I was in the motor trade (body shop) in the 70s & 80s. I've done re-shells and major accident repairs. Watching you remove all that wiring and other components makes me wonder how the hell I remembered how to put them all back together again. lol.
Looking forward to the next instalment.

Amazing those speaker magnets with the rust attached , but also logic with the bmw's rust. The rest is very understandable, meaning the rust. Damn rust, but I love the welding part and you show how it is supposed to be done. As a me mechanic doing MOT's I always have short welding job to get them(the cars) approved. But your way is how I love it, but I never get the time in the garage to such a extensive repair job.

I still wonder though, why? I know this car is extremely collectible, but there must be thousands of examples out there that are more worthy of the care and attention this car is getting. Can anyone explain?

It’s a showcase for the skills and capabilities of the firm, attracting paying customers.
They’re not charging Mat. In lieu of money, they’re getting huge traffic from being associated with a very popular channel. I’m a case in point. I visited via Mat’s channel and now I much prefer YCR!
If I had a valuable car with cash value and sentimental value, I’d spent a stupid amount with YCR to get it to a high standard.

    • @GT380man
      @GT380man ปีที่แล้ว

I restored a Suzuki bike of the 1970s, stripping all the harnesses out, and there was a fair amount of damage to plugs and conductors. I labelled everything as it was fed out of the headlamp shell, and under the side covers. I did worry about whether it would go back in neatly and most importantly whether it would all work. That was only a couple of dozen plugs and the hardest part was getting everything which belonged in the shell back in properly. At first I wasn’t close to being able to put the reflector back into the shell, because there seemed to be 50% too much harness etc! I learned that routing is absolutely crucial, otherwise the loom plugs for the peripherals don’t reach one another. Ryan has ten times more loom connections.
I expect they’ll be similar internally to the block connectors I wrestled with, with flat, copper pins crimped onto the ends of up to a dozen, different coloured wires, which are wrapped in loom tape. You need extreme patience imo.
I’ve seen three approaches. Most of the guys I know restoring the same model buy new looms. They’re not too expensive considering what you’ve to spend anyway and at least you won’t have a half century old wires and connectors.
I restored & reused mine and I learned a lot more that way, fixing design flaws as I went. There are well known weaknesses in the original, where they saved a bit of money at the cost of later lesser reliability.
The last approach is just rip it all out, and shove it back in afterwards and only then fix whatever didn’t work. Nightmare that, trying to diagnose why it’s over-charging and boiling batteries or why there is a weak spark on one cylinder…..
On my next full restoration I confess I went the new loom route. Perfect.
I’ve bought looms for the oldest resto and when I’m presented with an excuse, I will strip the bike again and improve the electrics. It’s already too good of a restored bike, but I do take it out for a thrash occasionally!

It’s a must to get it fully painted and not wrapped. It’ll be expensive but we saw how beautiful his yellow Cayman came out. I could eat the finish on that Porsche. It looks better than factory, though he spent what ten grand on it?
This BMW is going to be boss. I hope Mat just makes it look like the best original car it could have been. A bit more power but not lowered & with boy racer wheels and a bloody great spoiler!

Those looms look an absolute mess but lay them out flat and they should become (sort of) obvious where to rebind them. Call me soft but I love sorting wiring looms out. The difficult bit is recalling what route the looms followed. Tank God for your videos!

That is insane! Why the hell do they need that amount of wiring? I've had to do wiring work on a car for welding, and it was quite plush for it's day, but it never had or needed a harness like that. What on earth is it all for?

They probably made one master wiring harness that covers every model, they still do it today, cheaper to make one with all the connectors loaded and ready for different models, and being BMW they dont cut corners with cable sizes
that car had a lot of technology for its day

Look how long it took to take it out…imaging having to review all the vids ensuring all goes back in correct sequence…gives me anxiety just thinking about it 😖

I would have just pulled out that wiring harness long ago completely because it's going to have to be totally rewired anyway

Why so many wires? BMW equipped these luxury vehicles with almost all electric systems that were available those days and hat to connect all these systems with discrete wires since bus systems were not yet introduced by the automotive industry. I think this nightmare of a wiring harness explains why Bosch and Intel developed the CAN bus in the 1980th.

At least the existing wiring harnesses looks to be mostly salvageable. Unlike the rat food wiring that they put on recent German cars.

It is, but a lot of the plastic clips have perished, but should be salvageable
