Yeah, I usually don't go for the "this and that is so underrated!" route, but with Prey I just have to, as it really is so damn underrated gem, at least commercially. Easily one of the best games of the year.
I think a lot of people would have played a new IP, but when they slapped the name "Prey" on it, I think it was just obscure enough for few people to know what it was to begin with. For others, like me, it's upsetting to see them take Prey and re-imagine it so completely. I'm still super salty that there's never going to be a Prey 2 based off of the original Prey. It makes it hard for me to justify spending money on the game that killed a character and world I enjoyed exploring, and wanted to see more of.
I think most people were let down by the scrapped Prey 2 from Human Head. They had a viral marketing campaign that started a while after the incredible bounty hunter footage from Prey 2 was released. They doubled the hype for the game then. However, none of that came to be. I'm sure they were provided with more money to develop a game with the Prey name regardless of the "new IP" feel and that burned some gamers with that knowledge. I didn't know there was a Prey in the 90's and I'm willing to bet most didn't either. Also, I don't think it deserves GOTY. It's inventive and immersive but the backtracking becomes such a slog that it hurts the game. It made me so aware of how much of a dungeon crawler it was and made it a pain to continue about 60% of the way through. However, I did push through and was impressed by the lead up to it and the ending itself. It's a fun game but it needed more enemies if they wanted to take the dungeon crawler route and not seem annoying or boring at points.
The best thing about Prey for me was that there were so many possibilities to do things in certain ways that made you feel like you tricked the game, when it actually was just another acceptable way of playing it, rather than breaking the game. It rewards exploration, creativity and experimentation so much. Also the fact that there are so many lines for characters reacting to things that 95% of players wouldn't do (like deleting the file in front of Mikhaila's eyes) is amazing and really immersive.
For me that feeling was when I got Leverage II, but there was still a Leverage III item blocking my path. However, I realized I could keep throwing the L2 item at the L3 and it slowly but surely budged out of place and I could progress. Or the moment I realized the mimic ability would let me pass through those boarded up doors.
I think its been one of those 'slow-burn' sellers, where it didn't ship shed-loads in month 1, but it's been constantly selling an ok decent number ever since its launch. Saying that, I don't feel like we'll ever see a sequel :/
Ultimately, I think the name of the game actually hampered player perception (and consequently its sales). Of all the games I played in 2017, Prey stuck with me the most. I loved Breath of the Wild, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Nier: Automata, Cuphead, and Super Mario Odyssey, but there was something about Prey's ambience and overall atmosphere that left a very lasting impression on me. Excellent work Arkane. Patiently waiting on DLC announcement :P
I bought Prey in the Steam Winter Sale. I've been playing it for the past week and am about 14 hours in. This game is phenomenal so far. Bioshock is one of my favorite games of all time, and this game has a similar aesthetic and narrative structure, but I think this is the first game to really capture the essence of System Shock since System Shock 2. The level design, the upgrade system, the gameplay loop, it all feels like a refined and streamlined version of what System Shock innovated decades ago and too many people have ignored since. It really is great, and these guys succeeded in so many ways, I can't wait to get home and keep playing. And I'm also excited to see what they do next. Thankfully for me, I still haven't played the Dishonored games, so, now that I see how good Arcane is, I can safely buy them and they can keep me busy for quite a while after I finish all my playthroughs of Prey.
Dude, you're in for a real treat! Dishonored 1 and 2 and their DLC's are so damn good, as long as you don't expect "Prey In Past", as Dishonored is quite a different affair gameplay-wise. And if Dishonored does it for you I really, really recommend playing The Knife of Dunwall and Brigmore Witches DLCs for the first one and The Death of the Outsider for the second one. Top quality DLCs, maybe even the best DLCs I've ever played (which makes me sad, that Prey didn't get any). Dishonored games and Prey have cemented Arkane as a day-1-buy studio for me.
Honestly, they're amazing at making games that feel like a tabletop RPG (right as he shows ultima). You have very applicable rules. These games have that unique quality that usually only exists in D&D when the player asks, "Can I do this?" and the DM goes "You do that, this happens."
Comfy Man very impressive since a dm is a person and can think and say what they want but a video game is way more limited and difficult to achieve that
I adored Prey 2017 (and the 2006 game was very good too, just different). I adore immersive sims. I adore Thief, Ultima Underworld, System Shock, Deus Ex: HR etc. These are special games that go places most simply don't. And they deserve this kind of coverage. It's sad that they don't seem to sell well but I guess not everyone appreciates art...
Prey is my all time favorite game. I’ve got almost 150 hours into it and I’m still playing years later!! Credit to the devs. They are an amazing team!!
I had to get a up a flor but couldn't find the keycard. I then used the gluegun to climb a wall to be able to jump onto the lights suspended from the ceiling. From there I could jump onto a bridge on the floor I had to get to. I tried because I didn't know what else to do, though I had little to no hope of it working. My mind was blown when it worked out. That was an amazing feeling of freedom and lack of constraints in a game for me.
The problem of a new Pray is that it has that 4 letters P, R, A,Y, that a little bid describes expectations. Especially when Prey 2017 made after canceling prev Prey 2 title, and more, that marketing about Pray 2017 was about "successor".
Игорь Игорь The marketing for Prey 2017 said it had nothing to do with the past games, it was never a successor and they never said it was. Everyone knew it was a new game, just with the same name as another game.
Arkane might be my favorite studio right now. I hope they can continue making Immersive Sims despite they aren't top sellers. On the other hand, it's sad that Raphael left Arkane.
This game is magic. I reallized when I found in the game a door blocked with big boxes and my character didn't had 2 points of the strenght hability to move those boxes, then I thought "It would be cool that I could take a gas tank that I found before and make those boxes blow up from the door so I can pass throught. But games doesn't work so. If the developers ask me 2 points of strenght to move the boxes then I need those 2 points". You know what? It worked. And then I reallized that developpers were asking me to be clever, be curious, to experiment with the game, even the narrative needed a little investigation by the player, and all, the art, the gameplay, the story was matched so well... when you play you see all those master design decisions and can't stop playing. Obvius there was things I didn't like, but all the good thinks this game have was like a tsunami for me, so fucking inmmersive that I have played 38 hours and I even have not spent points on the aliens habillities. I only can say: Thank you Arkane Studios and sorry for me buying this on Steam sales, I feel like I owe you money.
So far I completed 650 videogames in total (PC, PS1-2-3-4, Xbox-Xbox360, PSP-PS Vita, Wii U, mobile) and I have to say that Prey is one of the best games I've ever played. It's definitely in my Top 10 list and I'm so glad I bought it before release (and I almost never do that). It's a masterpiece.
I find Prey (2017) to be the year's most important game design, while flawed in some areas the experience highlights the Shock-aura devalue its shortcomings. Prey from 2006 is pretty impressive as well given the time it was released, portals, downsized (you'll know when playing), spirit form, no real game-over upon death. Prey '06 took a chance and went with it and it shows where the effort went.
Awesome doc as usual. I really enjoyed Prey. This game tickled all my fancies. Immersive sim, sci-fi, rpg...at one time I was playing the new Deus Ex and Prey at the same time, and it was fabulous, but a little overwhelming. Both incredible games that cater to my desires perfectly. Love you Noclip. Keep it up.
I really enjoy where this team are going. I just finished The Death of the Outsider, before Dishonored 2. They make such good games now I can barely keep up.
Immersive sims are my absolute favourite type of game and nobody makes them better than these guys and the team at Arkane. I think it's a real shame Bethesda didn't give Prey the marketing it deserved, because it was an absolutely stunning game, which shined bright, even in a year when new Zelda, Mario and Persona titles were released. I genuinely think Prey will go down in history as a true classic and I really hope these guys get an opportunity to work on more titles like this in the future. The world needs more immersive sims. Thanks for all your hard work Ricardo, Raphael and the rest of the team at Arkane.
Brilliant game. I enjoy the freedom and the world building found in these types of experiences. One gripe I do have with Prey is that I feel like the game peaked way too early. It never does hit the same notes as the first 1 hr. of the game.
Thinking back at all the games I played and all the different experiences prey really stands out. I feel like that space station was a place I was at. Would prob put it as my game of the year if it wasn't for those loading screens between areas.
I'm playing through Prey right now and it's already some of the best time I've ever had playing games. That sort of feeling like I'm in control of a situation that's totally out of control. No "press x to win" here, just use your brains to proceed... and maybe die a few times and learn.
Ricardo and Raphel's comments at 7:00 are particularly important IMHO: immersive sims are games that bother to create a real sense of depth with their systems. It's impossible to create games where the player can do anything, but a game like Prey really does impart some empowerment and freedom to the player that few games match. More often the "freedom" in other games is limited to GO where you want, not DO what you want (because often all you can do is drive / shoot / buy things).
@Noclip, please do a documentary about Larian Studios, the makers of Divinity: Original Sin 1 and 2, 2 being considered by many the best RPG ever created. Their games are massive and incredible detailed and complex. Plus the games were funded through Kickstarter. Perfect subject for one of your documentaries!
I've played a bit of Wolfenstein: The New Order, and I wouldn't call it an immersive sim. Then again, the name implies a commitment to realism and immersion which I don't think is the goal of the games named as such. Think about it; in both Prey 2017 and Dishonored, a key part of the games are a slew of magic powers, which (at least as far as I've played) aren't explained in depth. Realism isn't the end goal, the end goal is giving the player a ton of options; if that involves casually breaking the laws of physics to turn a full sized human into a coffee cup so be it. I'd say from what little I've played of Wolfenstein, it's really based on a set story and mostly linear. There are some stealth elements with the knive and killing officers, but the game doesn't really seem to have the sheer variety of options or reactiity I'dd expect from a game like Prey. Don't get me wrong, it seems like a good shooter, but I think it's a different genre.
Such a shame Colantonio is gone, but as they said in the interview, these projects are never about one or two people. God bless Arkane and let's hope they can keep making these sorts of games despite them almost not being commercially viable.
This is my GOTY for 2017. The only things I disliked were the endless loading screens, and the limited defensive options in combat. And by that, I mean you'll often find yourself in situations where you can't avoid getting hit. It would of been cool if you could use the jetpack to do a quick boost left or right, and that could have been your dodge. Additionally, the fact that your walking speed is slower when walking backwards makes it even tougher to "dodge"(if you can call it that) in this game. The hitbox on enemy projectiles appears to be like 3x bigger than the actual graphic is, and there's a ton of other subtle things that make it nigh on impossible to prevent being hit. It's really a shame that this was never fixed because other than these two points, the game is amazing. Later on in the game, you do gain access to a Blink-like power that helps with this. But a way to avoid damage should be standard, IMO, even if they did something as simple as increasing your walking speed it'd improve the game immensely, because then you'd be able to avoid most damage. It'd make the combat more fair and more engaging. No longer would you have to blindly tank through certain things, but you'd be able to spot the enemy's attack and respond by dodging and countering: which would be much more interactive and satisfying. But as it is in the game ATM, not only do you have to spend valuable resources just to be able to dodge, but you also have to have it equipped to use it when the option should just be present all the time for every player. And, actually, that's a 3rd issue that I have with the game. Many of the Nueromod upgrades are the kinds of things that you'd very much expect to be standard. Like, why do I have to waste Nueromods getting the upgrade that gives me more resources from the Recycler? Wouldn't it be better - and more satisfying - if the game was balanced so that you wouldn't need this? All it does is makes you feel like you're wasting resources. Every time you use the Recycler without this upgrade implemented, you're losing out. On the other hand, once you've installed this upgrade, well that's just eat 4 of your Nueromods(plus 1 more Nueromod, bringing the total to 5, if you count the fact that you have to unlock the "Physician" skill to even have access to it). There's nothing fun about this. In a word, it's unnecessary. And there's at least another 10 upgrades like this that just feel like they shouldn't exist, such as "Recover organs from dead typhoons", I mean, I killed the enemy, why don't you just let me pick up my reward without needing an upgrade to get it? There's lots and lots of nonsense like this in Prey, but truly, I love the game, overall. I can see it being one of those rare games that I play through at least once a year, and I only have a handful of those.
WIth so many incredible games released in 2017, it's a shame Prey was overlooked or overshadowed. Rewind the clock a few years and Prey would be on so many more Top 10 lists for the year.
Easily one of the best games of 2017. I'm just really sad that they didn't bother to release any DLC of any kind, and it seems like they probably won't bother with a follow up either.
Love how they breeze over how Bathesda owned the name Prey. hahaha How they financially bankrupted a great publisher, and destroyed a studio because they wanted to own its assets. Brutal.
Hunter Tinsley , but he still there, to help with transition to new management. Before his departure. Also, i kinda like Bethesda - Wolfenstein, Dishonored, Doom, The Evil Within - are amazing single player experiences.
I wish we could have gotten Prey 2, that bounty hunter game looked awesome, IDK, I like the whole system shock/bioshock thing but it's been done already, how many good bounty hunter type games do we have??? it's cool hearing what went into the new Prey but for me yet another shock game wasn't what I wanted....
hence my red lantern sigil lol more good things are fine but I've played the shock style game a few too many times but we don't have that many good bounty hunter games....
i would really like to now who ricardo and raphael were referen to when they mentioned architects working in ther tream. do they men 3D modellers or literal studied architects?
I'm glad to see more attention being paid to this title. It was horribly underappreciated, and easily one of the best games of the year.

I'd say from what little I've played of Wolfenstein, it's really based on a set story and mostly linear. There are some stealth elements with the knive and killing officers, but the game doesn't really seem to have the sheer variety of options or reactiity I'dd expect from a game like Prey. Don't get me wrong, it seems like a good shooter, but I think it's a different genre.
this game is criminally underrated !
When did Wolverine start developing video games? Great interview!
This is a great time capsule.
Honestly Arkane is one of my favorite studios making games today
I did in fact dig it a lot!
MOAR OF THESE
Logan?!? You're alive!!
Glad to see Wolverine found something to do after Logan.
Game of the year, easy.
Such a shame Colantonio is gone, but as they said in the interview, these projects are never about one or two people. God bless Arkane and let's hope they can keep making these sorts of games despite them almost not being commercially viable.
Nice to know that one of Prey's creators is Wolverine
that's a freaking good jacket
I can see it being one of those rare games that I play through at least once a year, and I only have a handful of those.
everyone should buy this game.
Do a Dead Space Documentary
With Gunner Please!!!
The guy on the right could easily cosplay Wolverine. In fact, I think he already is.
WIth so many incredible games released in 2017, it's a shame Prey was overlooked or overshadowed. Rewind the clock a few years and Prey would be on so many more Top 10 lists for the year.
Arkane is one of the last bastion of old school PC gaming leaders. Soon hopefully Nightdive will ascend to their ranks when they release System Shock
Whats the outro song? Sounds dope
Easily one of the best games of 2017. I'm just really sad that they didn't bother to release any DLC of any kind, and it seems like they probably won't bother with a follow up either.
man, me ignorant... gotta play this title.
Did they ever fix the sluggish controls on PS4? I tried the demo before release, and that was the reason i didn't get it on release.
Love how they breeze over how Bathesda owned the name Prey. hahaha How they financially bankrupted a great publisher, and destroyed a studio because they wanted to own its assets. Brutal.
Where is the NG+? i would kill to play it again with all previously acquired powers. Please Arkane, do NG+.
Prey has been abandoned. Raph is gone and Bethe$da isn't putting any more money into the IP right now.
Hunter Tinsley , but he still there, to help with transition to new management. Before his departure. Also, i kinda like Bethesda - Wolfenstein, Dishonored, Doom, The Evil Within - are amazing single player experiences.
As I live and breathe...the Wolverine
Wolverine cosplay FTW!!!
guy on the right looks like Joseph Fares
outro music?
GOTY for me, along with Zelda botw.
Hello Wolverine.
I wish we could have gotten Prey 2, that bounty hunter game looked awesome, IDK, I like the whole system shock/bioshock thing but it's been done already, how many good bounty hunter type games do we have??? it's cool hearing what went into the new Prey but for me yet another shock game wasn't what I wanted....
darthXreven omg something good exists fuck having more good things.
You're the worst.
hence my red lantern sigil lol
more good things are fine but I've played the shock style game a few too many times but we don't have that many good bounty hunter games....
whats that outro song?
Original prey was amazing for totally different reasons.
Comfy Man check the análisis/comparison of both Prey games by Noah Caldwell-Gervais, it does justice to both games
5:36 nothing questionable here
Is Raphael Colantonio cosplaying as Wolverine?
Immersive sims are the only games I'll play, I don't really like anything else. Prey 2017 is my top 3.
i would really like to now who ricardo and raphael were referen to when they mentioned architects working in ther tream. do they men 3D modellers or literal studied architects?
Architects = visual level designers. They are artists who handle the architecture of the levels
Prey looks like a game I'll either love or hate. Games are too expensive these days to experiment.
It was just on sale...
Yes but life is too short not to take chances.
It has a demo/trial on both consoles and PC, give it a try.
Anyone else wondering how wolverine can program games with claw hands
Is Colantonio cosplaying as Wolverine?
