Even then Norn was still formidable and makes me worried for the multiverse if the phyrexians are able to capture Aishok and complet them. I so hope Ashiok doesn’t get compleated during the next few sets . Mtg has its “evil schemer” villains (Bolas and Norn) , its “self serving henchmen” villains (Tezzeret and Dovin , to a certain extent) and its “force of nature” villains (Eldrazis and Phyrexians as a whole). Ashiok is something different, and their sheer elseness is so refreshing : they are something in between force of nature (almost an embodiment of fear itself) and scheming lunatic that actually enjoys their nature and role . It is always interesting and entertaining to see the more goal-oriented, mastermind kind of villains come to face against something or someone that is completely foreign to their plans, a kind of odd dangerous evil so removed from their own that even they have to start questioning things.
    Tl,dr : we need more Ashiok

    • @evilpellu
      @evilpellu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also…it almost seems like Ashiok has been planning and preparing the conflict between Elspeth and Elesh Norn . They went to the underworld of Theros specifically to recover Elspeth , and now they’ve gone to Norn specifically to remind her of the danger that Elspeth poses to the Machine Orthodoxy . It seems that Ashiok expressly wants this confrontation to happen… but I couldn’t guess why

    I'm always excited when we get a new story featuring Ashiok. They are easily my favourite planeswalker, even if they are woefully underdeveloped and underutilized. I seem to recall from an older story about Ashiok (one of the only two or three out there) that they see fear as the greatest equalizer and that their main motivation (aside from creating nightmarish masterpieces) is to use fear to humble those individuals who believe themselves to be above other beings, such as the kings and gods of Theros, and now apparently the phyrexian praetors. If nothing else, we can definitely say that Ashiok humbled Elesh Norn a bit here, and she didn't take too kindly to it. Can't wait for future stories involving the Nightmare Weaver.

      Disgusting? Okay Elesh Norn. Seems like you don't understand the story. Right through your ears. Things aren't they way you like, so you spurn them and call them disgusting.

      While Ashiok's gender is not known, Mark Rosewater and others at wotc referred to the planeswalker as "he or her" while revealing that the gender was not yet known. This predates wotc desire to be "woke" and practice revisionist history with their own characters (2013).
      Does this make saying "They" disgusting? Hardly. Its just easier to say They when you are unsure whether the planeswalker is a he or she. Its not grammatically correct, but many of the things people say are not. Not a big deal.
      Pure angel... not everything needs to be a political issue. Calm down with the disgusting talk lol. You DO sound like a depraved Phyrexian!

    @1986Om3ga 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    I like seeing how Ashiok's magic is powerful even against beings you wouldn't think it would work. But I think the biggest takeaway I had was when Ashiok got rattled when Elesh Norn dug deep, refocused on her divine purpose and her confidence that Phyrexia is the truth, manifesting her own nightmares. The...determination of Phyrexia is honestly their most terrifying aspect.

  • @jeremyobriant7266

    Ashiok is one of my favorite designs for a character in MTG. I like how both Elesh Norn and Ashiok have similar designs (eyeless, horned, clawed) but Ashiok's design is darker while Elesh Norn's is brighter. It's a cool contrast.
    Also, can a nightmare be compleated? 🧐

    • @astuteanansi4935
      @astuteanansi4935 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't think so, compleation requires organic flesh. While Ashiok is partially flesh, they're also partially made of nightmare magic. The glistening oil may have unpredictable effects on an entity that is somehow functional despite missing many organs that should be necessary to survive and I think Elesh would rather erase them with a blast of light than risk messing up the "perfect" world she created.

    • @jeremyobriant7266
      @jeremyobriant7266 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@astuteanansi4935 That's similar my thought. A nightmare, at least as I imagine it, isn't a tangible object (even though in MtG, a nightmare creature doesn't have any gameplay text that would allude to them not being interactable, unlike text an illusion creature type has). I'd consider it a thought or an idea, and therefore not a physical object. I'm thinking Ashiok is more akin to an illusion, appearing in "physical" form inside your mind.
      But we may just be overthinking everything. We shall see what is to come next!

What I love is how *restrained* the story is, showing us the villains in both their power and limitation already and not just a seemingly unstoppable threat. TBH the lead in from Neo Kamigawa had me a bit worried they'd follow the same notes with Phyrexia replacing Bolas, but the grounded details in this story were really compelling. Now we are getting a good story! I love how the story made me, a human, feel like human flesh is disgusting. 😂 Ashiok being able to effect Elesh Norn is an interesting match up. I fully expect Ashiok to be on their own side with no allegiance, but I wonder if they have teamed up with Sheoldred who is (surprise) not dead. 😈Regardless, I wonder if they have the power to divide a conquer the Phyrexians, it’ll be fun to see what happens and if all will really be one.
    Elspeth is always finding girls who can fix everybody’s problems and getting magical weapons, so I’m pretty sure if Luxior doesn’t help beat back the Phyrexians she will find more until she can arm all the planeswalkers in existence. The Luxior card makes planeswalkers into creatures so I want to know how it functions in the story. Since the Phyrexians have been using the Planar Bridge I suspect Luxior/Halo will be able to destroy it, but who knows. Magical weapons or not, Elspeth is definitely scary to the cold logical predictability the Phyrexians love.

    Ashiok is a more mysterious being than any other, nightmare manipulation at Ashioks core, has the distinct advantage over any mind or any being possessing a mind, to completely usurp Ashioks target through fear, you would need one who is unbreakably insane to battle Ashioks power. What does Ashiok fear? kittens, rainbows, food colored super glue, or a blank canvass, could literal nothingness or a type of, nirvana if you will, be the fear of nightmares itself? lol Dont mind my mindless musing here, its just that Ashiok is not very well fleshed out as a character or planeswalker, so we dont know alot about what could make Ashiok vulnerable if its possible at all.

    I get they are setting up a Mirridon Pure storyline, however it still annoys me that the Mirrion resistance still exists. They made a whole point of noting that the Furnace layer got overrun by Norns forces. There was no place else to run, and trying to set up a Mirrion resistance to use in the eventual New Phyrexia set just feels very ham fisted.

      Karn is coming with the Cylix. If the rumors are true it's the same thing that almost wiped out Dominaria the end of the Brother's War and put the plane into a massive global winter for 2500 years and didn't end until a pre-mending Planeswalker stop it.
      Not going to see Mirrodin Pure, it's gonna be Mirrodin Gone.

    This felt weird to me, isnt phyrexians a combo of flesh and machine to become perfection? I really dont agree with a phyrexian going "oh yuck, meat"

    • @violeth2255
      @violeth2255 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Phyrexians are part flesh, but see it as a weakness to be purged. Yawgmoth managed to wholly transcend his flesh only to just barely be cast down at his moment of triumph. Karn was tainted with the weakness of flesh by his creator and companions, a weakness nearly purged before fleshings stole him away. The praetors approach the transcending of their flesh, but are yet to reach it.
      Vorinclex, Jin Gitaxias, and Urabrask each survived the destruction of their organic components when traversing between planes, yet had to incorporate new organic parts in order to function. If they can purge themselves of this weakness, they and their armies could invade other planes with impunity. They could bring their glorious gift to all of those hobbled by the cursed flesh and unite the multiverse before the fearful deluded fleshings could muster a misguided opposition.
      The flesh is disgusting because it is imperfect and stubbornly resists total compleation.
