    The reduced FOV seems (to me) a fair price to pay for the image stabilisation. That said, I don't understand why Drift can't achieve something even close to GoPro picture quality; image stabilisation aside, the contrast isn't quite right. I don't now whether that's user adjustable. The battery life in betwen charges is impressive, but I think it a pity they seem to have abandoned modular batteries in favour of non-removable. Still, at the price point it's worth a punt.

    • @Phil480
      @Phil480  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's no contrast adjustment but the exposure can be adjusted and there is a Vivid mode which I am yet to try on this one. On the old ones it boosted the saturation.
      So far, I feel this camera is fine for more of a dashcam type of thing, but for creating TH-cam videos, it doesn't meet the expectations that other cameras can easily do.

    • @Seymour_Cox
      @Seymour_Cox 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Battery is still removable, but the stabilization only works on 1080p60 or 2.7k50, it doesn't work on 4k, and the fov needs to be 115 at most.

    • @Seymour_Cox
      @Seymour_Cox 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Phil480 if you turn vivid mode on, you lose the stabilization. It's so idiotic the way they manage the settings. Whatever you input on the video screen (green colour) overrides any non-compatible value set in the settings screen (blue colour), and the other way around. For example, you go into the settings screen and turn stabilization and vivid mode on, but you still have the resolution in the video screen set to 4k, 25fps. Guess what? The moment you exit the settings screen and start recording, it will record using those parameters and the values you adjusted in the settings screen will be reverted (stabilization off and colour mode standard) even though they will still show up as being the ones you input.

  • @HippoDrones

    I prefer stabilised footage, but the video quality looks so much nicer at the 140' than at the cropped 115' which makes it more like 1080 true resolution. It has the potential to be an awesome camera, but you hit the nail on the head, the lens is the main issues currently.

    • @Phil480
      @Phil480  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree, the 140º looks better with stability off. I am thinking of buying a spare lens and will try and see if I can find a way of converting it to get a wider angle. Not sure if it will work because of focus etc, but might be worth a go.

    I think I like the image stabilizer on. It doesn’t show your helmet and it is so much smoother. Stabilizer off and I get dizzy.

    "...it narrows the fov.... which is not what you want from an action cam". Sorry, but that is EXACTLY what I want from an action cam! Fed up with the ultra zoomed out fish-eye effect of 170° - So thanks for this review I am ordering the XL Pro instead of the XL 👍🏻

    Hello, Thank you for your video. I got information about this product from your video. And I have a question. It seems like that the FOV changes so much depending on whetehr the image stabilization os on or off, is that correct? And that changing is also happening at 1080p? If it is true then I'll prefer 2.7k of course but if it's not then I should choose between the FOV and stabilization, which I prefer.

    • @Phil480
      @Phil480  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is correct, turning the stabilization on does reduce the FOV to 115º regardless of if it's in 1080p or 2.7k.

      @@Phil480 Thank you again :D I also bought this camera and I tested it. After several tests, I decided to use this cam in 4KUHD resolution. Of course not stabilization. A wide angle of image seemed more important to me than image stabilization, and when it was mounted on a helmet, the shaking was not so severe. And considering storage capacity, 4KUHD seems like a better choice.

    Just bought one of these today. I'm on the fence between stabilisation and its narrow field of view also. i prefer the 2k @60fps unstabilised for mountain biking. makes the footage more natural. i would say the stabilisation would be useful if it were mounted to the bike itself. I use my old 1080 ghost XL as a rear cam now and that would most benefit from stabilisation :) otherwise, great camera for the price and battery life!

    Is the camera good enough to clearly identify licence plate details?

    • @Phil480
      @Phil480  ปีที่แล้ว

      More likely with stabilisation on. Really depends on speed and distance that the plate is moving. For UK plates, it seems clear enough, but I imagine plates in other countries that are harder to read, the camera is probably not good enough for that.

    Hi Phil, you seem to be close to me, I’ll look out for you! How are you getting on with this camera? I like the stabilisation, but not the field of view reduction. What Sony do you refer too in this video? I keen to have something, but not overly struck on anything yet, they all seem to have their issues…. Cheers, SnG

    • @Phil480
      @Phil480  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use the Sony FDR-X3000 camera which is brilliant. Only 2 main drawbacks to it, there's no control over the mic input volume and the battery life isn't much. But for the image quality and optical stabilization it's very good.
      As for the Drift, so far it's behaving itself and it's good as a day to day always on sort of camera. The FOV is its main let down.

    I know this vid is a year old , just got my XL Pro , image stabilization on this one does not stabilise at 60fps when in 2.7k , but if I reduce frame rate to 30fps then it does work along with reducing the field of view , just want to confirm that your one was on 60fps and stabilisation worked ? , the firmware showing on this camera appears to be a higher number than the upgrade firm number on the innovation site for downloading , I wonder if I should risk the upgrade from drift see if that works at 60fps ?

    Go to bike camera if you can’t run a wire from somewhere to a gopro (battery alone is dreadful) but if you can use a gopro without the battery in you can’t beat it imo, got a 11 and looks absolutely incredible but I use it without a battery inside and have a small wire from my usb on my bike to the gopro and works great

      It's a bit fiddly but I'm sure you should be able to set it manually via the camera menu using the buttons. I've known the app to not always apply all of the settings that you select, or sometimes changing one setting will also change something else.

    Also does the battery last longer at 2.7k 60fps than 4k mode? I am thinking I am going to mainly use 2.7k 60fps and switch to 1080p 60fps for very long trips.

    Would there be any difference in using the built in image stabilisation as opposed to doing it in video editing software on the computer afterwards? Software stabilisation usually looks worse from my experience.
      Good idea using your old one as a rear facing one.
      To answer your other question, the battery does last longer on 2.7k 60 than 4k.
      For long trips I do the same, knock it down to 1080p 60

      @@Phil480 Just wondering how big are the files you get at 2.7k 60fps? I have mine set to high bitrate and am using dashcam mode set to 10 minute intervals. The files don’t seem big enough as they are less than 1gb for 10 mins where the Ghost XL 1080p 30fps was about 500MB for 5 minutes. Windows is showing 11792kbps bit rate.

    Nice comparison! I'm waiting for mine. Since the stabilization is digital, not mechanical, I will try to shoot at 4k with 60fps without it and do the stabilization at post-production. DaVinci Resolve seems to have nice algorithms for that, I can tweak how much the FOV is lost and other parameters.

      That's the problem with this type of stabilisation. For it to work, the camera has to crop the video so it has a buffer of video around the edges to compensate for the movement. Unfortunately there's nothing you can do about it.
