We've just got ourselves a bongo, we absolutely love it!! It's converted to a camper with a rear conversion, auto free top like you mentioned. Must go to one of these events.... Looks awesome!
Bah! Mustn't have been around when you walked round filming the vans (all-grey van with topbox on AFT at 3:22). Great video, capturing the Bongo scene perfectly.
Good grief! There is a club and everything. Looks like crazy fun and gotta love such a practical vehicle. The only Bongo Van we got in Aus was the little original rear engined one in the late 1960s. It was a groovy little thing. None of the later Mazda vans were called Bongo, some were decked out like yours (Mazda Traveller) but mostly just tradies vans to compete with the Hi Ace. 👍✨
Everything has to have a club 😀 These were never released on the UK market either but get imported to the UK when they hit the Japanese second hand market. We had other tradies vans too.
Head Gasket is a risk on the Diesel vans, they are difficult to bleed and most places don't do it properly. Check the condition of the water pipes as they are prone to rotting. When doing g a test drive make sure you go far enough to get it good and hot, the temp needle should stay in the 11 o'clock position.
Bongos are lovely to drive mate. I had to drive a T5 from Swansea to Norfolk and back in a day, I was glad to get back into my Bongo for the home journey.
Hey Mandy, the Bongo section was friendly and the whole festival has a good vibe. There is a Bongo group for ladies only, they are on FB and they attended last year so your best bet is to reach out to them and get their view 👍

Watch out for rust and failed head gaskets. Make sure you get underneath and have a proper poke around.

Anyone buying a bongo they are amazing vans but just make sure to have a garage check coolant pipes for rust and fit a coolant alarm straight away.
