Mooncalf2012 Dave as Bob really did an inside joke we he mentioned Fred Silverman was his driver. The head of the network- he might have taken that gem from the real Bob.
This stuff was based on outtakes from an Orson Welles radio commercial. I recently saw an interview with Candy on the Dick Cavett show where he mentioned how much loved Orson Welles telling off the sound engineer. Candy was for some reason insanely nervous about being on talk shows.
It was late 1981 or 1982. I remember Johnny Carson made a mention of them being in the NBC studio filming this sketch on a Tonight Show and he mentioned how much he liked SCTV. There also was a sketch with the SCTV trio and Fernando Lamas (Billy Crystal) golfing, but I must have lost it.
Great comedic teams ever. John Candy,Dave Thomas, Rick Moranis damn I wish all these guys were still doing stuff. Rick is still around just not doing movies. I think he's doing Comedy albums now if I'm not mistaken. and a very huge shout out to the late and great JOHN CANDY who left this world way too early.
I liked the SCTV bit they did on their own show with Bob Hope and Woody Allen I think Woody has Bob's ghost in his head as a parody of Play It Again Sam, that was good stuff. This was really rare thanks for posting it.
There is one scene in "Play it again Bob" (SCTV Vol.1 Disc1), where Allen and Hope play golf, but you may be talking about another sketch from the Billy Crystal Hour (that I don't have) where Hope, Allen, Welles and Fernando Lamas play golf.
According to my small research The Billy Crystal Comedy Hour on NBC in 1982 did not last long. Billy came to tape episode five and they told him it was cancelled and there was no more airings. So at most it got four airings.
I don't think Welles was that bad either. This was based on bootleg outakes from a radio ad that Welles was doing where he got fed up with the ad director's stupid comments.
again, right. I've heard those tapes, btw. The English commercial director is a complete boob. I wish Candy had done an extended thing on Welles, a longer piece on the constant destruction of his work, or perhaps an interview sketch or something- like Welles being hired by Bobby Bittman to direct and then being told what to do by Bittman. Good satire can throw a light on things and tell truths in a way like nothing else can.
I'm sure the company released the bootleg tape trying to make Welles look bad, but it's almost like they were trying to annoy him so they could get these outtakes. You really just end up feeling sorry that Welles had to work with these idiots.
Three towering talents..Dave, Rick and Big John. SCTV was the high water mark of television comedy..never equalled.
Dave Thomas' Bob Hope impression, so scarily accurate, even the jokes bombed just like Hope's.
oh my god what a great impression
they laughed at Bob Hope...like a bunch of braindead sheeple...the masses are, forever and always, massive asses
Mooncalf2012 Dave as Bob really did an inside joke we he mentioned Fred Silverman was his driver. The head of the network- he might have taken that gem from the real Bob.
yea, Hope had been around forever, never understood why h e couldn't get better writers
@@johnerwin9024 It was a different time; those *were* good writers

Oh my God I miss John Candy so much. "Yes. I'm on my mark. Move your camera." I'm still laughing.

I love every syllable of these impressions. How did Billy Crystal not just laugh out loud constantly?
Thomas, Moranis, Candy, profound comic geniuses, Candy took everyone to the next level....
This is so awesome that Billy had these guys on. SCTV just crazy talent. Best sketch show ever.
They say Bob Hope was a really difficult impression ... but this is really good.
But I wanna tell cue-card boy ya
Incredible imitations!!!!
exactly. Candy, like all great comic actors, took that and ran with it. Welles was actually beloved by his crews and his actors almost universally.
What a great group of comedians! Just awesome.
RIP John

Lighten up, man. Your Mood ring is turning black.
Carson loved Dave Thomas’ impression of Bob Hope apparently.

John Candy as Orson Welles is pretty funny! Damn, he is of the best comedians ever!
R.I.P. John.
It was hilarious.
dave thomas!!! (rick moranis does a great woody allen too).

You're right. He's glib. His impressions are funny.
Does anyone on the planet have full episodes of the Billy Crystal Hour?
What year was this from?
This is classic, thanks for putting this up!
I personally like Dave Thomas as Bob Hope, he has him down.
According to my small research The Billy Crystal Comedy Hour on NBC in 1982 did not last long. Billy came to tape episode five and they told him it was cancelled and there was no more airings. So at most it got four airings.
Dave Thomas did a Brilliant Bob Hope !!
I remember an SCTV piece with "Hope" and "Woody Allen" on the golf course that just killed... can't find it anywhere.
it's on youtube
John candy brilliant rip sir
Thomas's Hope 😆👍👏
Dave Thomas is Bob Hope.
Dave wrote in his book on SCTV that Billy Crystal wanted to join the cast of SCTV at the end there but ended up going to SNL when the show ended.
That was bunk... I was wanting to see the Punk Honeymooners skit.
Did these guys do any skits with Robin Williams? I'd love to see that...
Why dont they give stars a comedy specials today, let them do their own thing.
Bea Benaderet...there's a ancient throwback in the old fart daze

these tree guys are really funny!
YES Welles was like that
Music by Van Dyke Parks(!)

I like to call PARENTHOOD: "Cliche's the movie"

A little off topic, but I guess Welles tried to do to Hearst, what Hearst did to Fatty Arbuckle.
No, but Robin Williams was a guest on SCTV once.
Welles wasn't really like this, I don't think. Candy is nonetheless hilarious
Rick's Bob Hope is scary good....
Its Dave Thomas not Rick Moranis.
haha
Thank you for everything! Here’s a little something for fun: th-cam.com/video/4MspluzIpjU/w-d-xo.html
@giles422 He was worse than this. Ask anyone.
Crystal so weak....
Billy is just not a straight man.
that's why he played a faygala on the Soapy blasphemspeak that corrupted and basically killed religion as we know it...Great job Susan H. & Co.!
+szs voc you should know udsless...whatever the fuck that is
Billy Crystal Comedy? There's an oxymoron. And before you say it, no I'm not an Antisemite, I just don't think he's funny.
Bea Benaderet...there's a ancient throwback in the old fart daze
No greater talent.
