    Welcome to Episode 2 of Madness Season 2: Best 90s Cartoons! We're trying to decide not only what are the best cartoons of the 90s, but which is THE best cartoon that premiered between 1990 and 1999. In this episode it's two powerhouses of Cartoon Network and Warner Bros, Batman the Animated Series vs Dexter's Laboratory, but who will win?
    In this season we have two guests: Alex Faciane from Super Beard Bros, and Barry Kramer.
    Madness is a discussion/debate show where we decide what we think is best in any given category of video games, movies, food or anything else. We make a tournament style bracket, and the winning subject of each discussion goes onto the next round until we find a winner.

    Fun fact: Not even creator Genndy Tartakovsky knows what accent Dexter's voice is supposed to be.
    EDIT: Minor correction. Bullock was not invented by the cartoon. He was already in the comics, just never makes it into adaptations since they never focus on Gotham PD outside of Gordon. Montoya and Quinn WERE made just for this show, though. As well as Nora Fries and Summer Gleeson.
    Also, while the vast majority of B:TAS' episodes did indeed premiere on Saturday morning, there were a few episodes (most notably Robin's Reckoning) that aired in primetime.

    • @MichaelHeide

    Yeah, I see now that Dexter isn’t as thorough as a series as I remembered it as a kid.
    Even in Courage the Cowardly Dog, some villains carry over into other episodes and their arcs continue, but in Dexter’s Lab, the dynamic between Dexter, Dee Dee, and Mandark, was really the only thing that kept the show going.

I cant wait to see the movie Nickelodeon has been making for it, I can finally get closure on what happened to Arnold's parents! Good show but not a really good debate, i know that it was an unfair matchup but they are basically displaying all their biases for the rest of the show lol. I mean... i wonder which show will win at the end...
    This is a time where Forrest Lee should have really tried to push a debate, thats essentialy the job of the moderator, asking question like "What did dexter do better than batman?" "What is better for kids to watch?" because the legacy of dexter goes beyond media, is a show that inspired little kids into have an interest for science (including myself, i'm now a physicist).
    i mean yeah i probably would go batman at the end too, but a battle becomes really unfair when both parties don't have equall opotunities of winning.
    And of course saying "this is my opinion and i'll not change it no matter what you say" is not how you start a debate either, i mean why are you debating anyway? you might aswell just cast your votes by mail if they are unable to change

    Also, i think the best goal of a talking point for all these comparisons that was missing in season 1 would be "Is this thing outstanding in it's genre", like is this apple the better at being an apple, than that orange is at being an orange? In this match up it's obvious that Batman stands out among serial, story based animated shows, while Dexter's isn't really exceptional in comparison to other slapstick, short bit cartoons. So I hope that philosophy holds up for the rest of the series.

    This is already much better than the first Madness, which I couldn't really enjoy watching. The first series of Madness just felt really kinda aggravating to watch because I felt like the criteria that the games were being judged off of would keep changing and I just stopped because it was getting grating.
    However, and maybe it's easier to compare cartoons compared to video games, but this is a lot more fun and enjoyable to watch I like hearing this engaging conversation and the aspects brought up. I feel like you guys are really just comparing what is the better show, what executes it's ideas better and what one was more bold or distinct. So nice to see my opinion on this series pull a 180 my only small nitpick is when Ice Cap started playing I thought it was kinda out of place and it pulled me out for a second. Great mix, but it was odd to have video game music in a series that isn't about video games. Still that's a nitpick I'm very much looking forward to how this one wraps up.

    • @Mekasoundwave
      @Mekasoundwave 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      To be fair, I think that's just part of the media being discussed. What makes a good video game is something inherently more subjective than what makes a good cartoon. Especially when you're specifically discussing what makes a good N64 game.

    • @SureyD
      @SureyD 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      As someone studying game design, I'd lean toward the idea that the 1st season was harder because they were video games. It's not that video games have no criteria, but rather that 1) the general populace has more knowledge about linear story-telling and 2) game design is an insanely complex field.
      When you mix all that in the nostalgic mess (not in a bad way) that was the N64 era, I can see why people couldn't stay in (although I won't forgive the insults that popped throughout). That said, as someone who is both game designer *and* someone who played the N64 back then, it was really captivating.

      I actually still prefer the less professional approach with the first season. While the game I wanted to win didn't win I actually like hearing the more different approaches of saying what's the better game. With cartoons to say how one is better over the other is a bit limited but either I'm enjoying this and I'm just Courage won't get knocked out first round though that may be difficult.

      Diego G Alex does talk a lot and I can see how that can get annoying, but Shane and Barry are not even trying to contribute. Alex gives them a chance. You can see it when he lets Austin talk. Austin doesn't even have a lot to say, but he is contributing. Besides, a debate is suppose to be you convincing others that your subject is the right choice. They're suppose to be working to convince the others to change their mind. Barry and Shane have not even tried doing that yet. Neither has Austin so far this season, but we haven't gotten to his strong suites yet.

    I really Dexter's Lab. A lot of memorable characters and some pretty memorable lines came from it. I have also never watched much of the Batman Animated Series. I saw a bit of it, here and there... but did not like it much at all..
    That being said... Batman is still the clear winner. I know how influential the show was. Not just for the 90s, but for Batman entirely.
    I've tried to go back and watch Dexter before, but I just do not care about anything that happens in it anymore. This is a little weird to me, since it's not like any of the jokes are dated any more than any other cartoon... But it just does not hold any nostalgia for me.

    • @XenoKnightAlpha
      @XenoKnightAlpha 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CascadeHope You know, I remember Dexter's Lab as a silly cartoon. It's more or less shenanigans, incidents, and hijinks. There wasn't much story to it at all except for the time travel special. Very memorable, and maybe I would still find it funny if I'd to watch it again. I remember enjoying it so much, but you know, things change.
      However, with Batman The Animated Series, I don't remember much except for The Joker. It's funny because I know I watched it plenty of times. Maybe it's drowned out from all the other iterations of Batman. I dunno. There's just so many versions. I seem to remember Batman Beyond the most though. Maybe it's because that iteration isnt so much explored anymore, but I imagine if I were to rewatch Batman Beyond, I'd enjoy it much more than Batman The Animated Series.

      While I feel like Spectacular Spiderman could compete with Batman TAS based on characterization and storytelling, the fact that it's animation is pretty terrible to look at while Batman's is gorgeous makes it it clear winner since they are so comparable in other categories.

    The Batman Animates Series actually developed it's own sub-genre of art. It's called "Dark Deco", you can see a reference to it on one of the license plates on the show. Typically Art Deco is bright and gleaming, think of the art from Civilization 5. Dark Deco maintains the lines and the shapes, but makes it dark and broody (I know, over used words for batman). Also, can we talk about the police blimps? Those are awesome! I believe you can catch hints of them in the show Gotham.

    Though, Batman does a lot of actually horrifying things, but so long as no one actually dies on screen it's fine.
    But how did Alex think the show didn't have guns? They have guns out the wazzoo and they aren't designed cartoonily either, they've got revolvers, pistols, A-K 47s I think, I don't know my guns too well.

    Here's the thing Genndy Tartakovsky may have Dexter's Laboratory; however, if this was a comparison of his other work, Samurai Jack, then it would have been a much more interesting duel. I would have also voted for Batman: The Animated Series (I'm a little shocked that you didn't bring up the movie that was directly tied into the tv series, Mask of the Phantasm), but if I remember correctly, Dexter's Laboratory was the very first Cartoon picked up by Cartoon Network for syndication. The people involved in the project, the creator of the powerpuff girls, Seth MacFarlane, Butch Hartman, and Tartakovsky were all coming out of school and while they were all making things for Cartoon Networks' "Cartoon, Cartoon" show, because at that time Cartoon Cartoons were playing shorts to see what the audience like while everything else was a Hanna Barbera rerun, and Dexter's Laboratory came out of that and became a regular, full on show.

    I've been rewatching Batman the Animated Series recently (in fact I just watched the episode where the villains are just sitting around talking about how they almost got Batman! Good thing I didn't watch this before that and had it spoiled...) and HOLY SHIT it's even better watching as an adult than as a kid!
    That show almost seems like it was meant for the parents more than their kids! And HOT DAMN they put a shit ton of detail and polish into that and it's absurd! I really can't get over it!
    Um... I guess in terms of Dexter's Laboratory... well it taught me out to spell laboratory (thanks to how Dexter says it)! Also, I liked how a good chunk of the main cast had a different sound effect when they walked. (I liked Dee Dee's squishy shoes!)

When I went back to Dexter I had also the experience that it actually wasn't that great.
