  • In this video I install the brake levers and brake cables on my 1x speed bicycle conversion project!
    I installed bar end brake levers on the bullhorn handlebars, and routed the brake cables such that they should be mostly out of the way and keep the bike looking clean and simple.
    More in upcoming videos. Stay tuned.

    Thank you BB!! I asked AND received!! My bar end levers should arrive in the next couple of days so this video was a massive help with a few things I was unsure about.

    Many thanks for the video, I have the same bars and Tektro RX 4.1 TT brake levers, the info with the MTB brake cables was very helpful!

    Do I need to change the brake cable? I can’t figure out how to get my cable out of my brake lever. I saw videos on how it’s done on other bikes but my bike doesn’t have that cut that allows the metal cable to come out...

    I have a folding bike I want to convert to bullhorns and bar end brakes. It currently has straight bars, MTB style brakes, trigger shifters and mechanical disk rotors. Will bar end shifters work with mechanical disk rotors. I read somewhere cable pull can be an issue? I will keep the trigger shifters as is.

    what type of bull horn bars do you have on this bike?

  • @ch33zer
    @ch33zer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have a very similar setup to yours but I'm trying to add a rear brake. I have an old brake cable from a previous bike. Is it possible to reuse the cables? On the tektro levers it seems like the hole is only big enough to allow an uncovered cable through.

    • @BikeBlogger
      @BikeBlogger  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ch33zer It should work if the inner cable is the correct type (mountain brake vs road brake cable) and long enough to reach the rear brake. You can reuse the outer cable (housing).

    So I swapped out my drop bar and installed a carbon fiber bull horn, with the same brake lever as you have in the vid. Brand new cables, everything. Only problem I have is the brakes don't stop me quick enough, like they're not clamping down enough, regardless of the adjustments I make. Any ideas of what I might be doing wrong or could do?

    • @BikeBlogger
      @BikeBlogger  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What kind of brakes do you have? Generally the brake lever and the brake need to match. These brake levers don't really work disc brakes or direct/linear pull cantilever brakes (v-brakes) These brake levers are meant for short cable pull brake calipers like traditional road brake rim brakes or the Avid Shorty short pull cantilever brakes used on the bike in this video. There might be a hack to use short pull brake levers with long pull brakes but you'd have to research it. Brakes are not really something you want to hack though.

    Hey - could you tell me what bullhorn handlebars you've got, and what the internal diameter was? I'm wondering whether 18.2mm will be big enough for my rx4.1 levers!

    • @BikeBlogger
      @BikeBlogger  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Taylor Rettke. I them with Origin8 bullhorn handlebars. The rx4.1 levers come with shims for each lever so they can fit a variety of internal diameters per step 2 of the owners manual. Tektro lists them as fitting internal diameters of 19.6 to 20.6 mm but I'm not sure if that includes the use of the shims or not. www.tektro.com/_english/01_products/01_prodetail.php?pid=73&sort=1&fid=3

      The bar end brake lever in this video comes with a metal shim so it can fit bar ends with wider diameters.

      The full playlist is here th-cam.com/play/PLEZf1_jDCYJ0DCjOrn0_aG0iZ2Pa_JHxK.html but I talk more about brakes in this old playlist here th-cam.com/play/PLEZf1_jDCYJ0NDIkeFMneQTTZj9F_3W8F.html Basically for this brake lever you just route the cable through the front of brake lever and then sheath cable housing over it on the other side. The instructions are here tinyurl.com/ycrv2br5

    and where is the cable outlet? Did you puncture the handlebar or did it come with outlet holes?

    • @BikeBlogger
      @BikeBlogger  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cables comes out the back of the lever. My handlebars aren't drilled for internal cable routing so they are routed externally outside the bars and under the bar tape.

      +Jordan Stow Did you first loosen the mounting bolt before trying to insert them into the bar? They use an expansion plug/sleeve mechanism.

    • @BikeBlogger
      @BikeBlogger  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jordan Stow Oh, and those brake levers also come with a shim. You don't have to use the shim - it is only for bars with a larger inside diameter.

    • @jordanstow6577
      @jordanstow6577 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +BikeBlogger yeah so the inside of the bars diameter is smaller then the brake diameter, I've stripped the mechanism and it doesn't fit regardless, would you recommend sanding the inside bar to give it some room to slide in?

  • @joocabs

    • @BikeBlogger
      @BikeBlogger  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cables go in through the front and out the back of these levers. I ran the brakes cables on the inside of the handlebars. Some handlebars have recesses or holes to route the cables through.

    • @joocabs
      @joocabs 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    would this work for a Haanjo Metro with mechanical disc brakes?

    • @BikeBlogger
      @BikeBlogger  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lologanable. These brake levers are for short cable pull brakes, by that I mean they are meant for caliper and cantilever brakes, not v-brakes/direct pull/linear pull or mechanical cable actuated disc brakes. These would probably not provide enough stopping power because they would not pull enough cable (long pull brake levers).

    • @Lologanable
      @Lologanable 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are there long pull bar end levers or do I have to get fancy with the levers I have

    • @BikeBlogger
      @BikeBlogger  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not certain Lologanable. Are the brakes Tektro Aires? Per the mfgr website they are linear pull type and you would need long pull bar end brake levers. www.tektro.com/_english/01_products/01_prodetail.php?pid=223&sortname=MTB&sort=2&fid=1 The brake levers need to match the brakes.

    • @Lologanable
      @Lologanable 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah they are Aires. I was thinking of using the current levers on the flat on a pursuit bar, or using a hooded lever in a peculiar way

    Is it possible to change the style of handlebars? I'm a new biker and new to your channel. Love your Videos! keep it up

    • @BikeBlogger
      @BikeBlogger  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Matthew Vargas Sure it is possible to change the style of handlebars. :) You may need to install new cables though depending on what handlebars you move to, and where you decide to mount the brake levers and shift levers, because the cables may not be long enough. I could have maybe reused some of my cables but since I am installing new handlebars I figured I'd take the opportunity to install new cables too. In the case of my brakes I could not reuse the cables because the brake levers in this video use mountain biking type brake cables which have different style cable ends than the road biking cables that were on my Shimano STI brakes. Thank you for the kind words, Matthew Vargas!

    The human hand/wrist doesn't like bars or levers that are truly horizontal or vertical. Angle your hands and let them relax into a natural stance, they like to be down 30 degrees from horizontal and back about 30-45 degrees as well.

    This video was a waste of time. Please cut your videos next time and if you are missing footage of the climax, that is, the end result, please don't post the video. By the looks of it, the bike cable runs between the bar end and the brake lever. That looks like my fingers would get stuck moving between grip and brake? But I can't see because the video just stops
