Georgia withdraws 'foreign agent' bill, protests to continue | DW News

  • The ruling Georgian Dream party said Thursday that it was dropping a controversial bill on "foreign agents." The announcement came after two nights of violent protests and criticism that the draft law represented an authoritarian shift in the country.
Georgian Dream said in a statement it would "unconditionally withdraw the bill we supported without any reservations." It cited the need to reduce confrontation in society.
The proposed bill, similar to laws in Russia, would have classified non-governmental organizations and media outlets as "foreign agents" if they received 20% or more of their funding from abroad.
The proposal was officially to target the disclosure of money flows from abroad, but protesters feared it would be used to harass government critics and clamp down on the opposition.

Not the Russians, firstly because they will never see this, secondly because if they did, the Russians are apparently too damned dumb to care. They pretty much do deserve to live in a fractured bunch of fiefdoms, which if they keep it up, that is pretty much where they may be headed. I saw a video the other day of Putin discussing exactly that, and what they are doing to protect those smaller sub "Russias" if that happens, and go figure, the first thing he mentions is creating private militias so that they can 'protect' themselves. Russian paranoia knows no bounds. I suspect the little Russia jr. plots will fight among themselves, which will be nice for a change, and they can probably figure out a way to further subdivide those. They never learn. I wish I'd look more into it but can't find the time at the moment but from my understanding yes any media that would pass the 20% foreign funding limit would have reporting requirements, inspections, administrative and criminal liability including up to 5 years for violations. It would basically make any slightly foreign funded media have to jump many hoops and potentially risk serious prison time for violations. This would streamline the media to be more government controlled but even in this shape it would not be anywhere near the government controlled media Russia has but this bill surely did seem like a step towards that direction from what I can understand. Perhaps a Georgian can explain it more in depth.
