The creative team had stated how difficult it was to write the Riddler, because of the difficulty of writing compelling puzzles to showcase Riddler's intellect. As a result, many Riddler scripts were rejected for being too long or too silly, which was the main reason for Riddler's late appearance in the show.
hard to get riddler right in animation or live action. i would have to say the latest batman with pattinson probably has the best modern take on the riddler and even that one had riddles which just ended up being kind of straightforward and obvious.
@@charleslee8313 they were witty but Bruce was dumb for not thinking into it even said something along the lines of "the grammar's a bit fucky but it's Spanish."
@Vinsanity Pattinson riddler does have the advantage of his Batman being more disconnected from normal people, and thus missing things other versions of Batman would find out quicker
“The corn is as high as an elephant’s eye, and it looks like it’s climbing clear up to the sky!” -Oh What a Beautiful Morning, from the musical Oklahoma.
In a DVD featurette showcasing Riddler, the creative team had commented that Riddler had been popularized by Frank Gorshin's Riddler from the live-action 1960 Batman series. When adapting the character for the animated series, Bruce Timm mentioned that personality wise, Gorshin's Riddler had been very similar to their version of Joker, so for their version of Riddler, he was deliberately depicted as a serious, suave intellectual to differentiate him from Gorshin's Riddler. Andrea Romano had remarked that she had brought in John Glover to voice the Riddler, who was a very nice man, but had a quality to his voice that was "a little scary."
A great introduction to such an iconic villain! I love how ultimately the Riddler wins in the end, leaving his former boss a paranoid wreck for the rest of his life!
Like Rick, I had the VHS for this as a kid and watched on repeat all the time. This is my favorite episode of the series and is what made Riddler my favorite Batman villain. Such a good episode.
I also loved the episode where Riddler pretended to reform but he couldn't help himself. That was right out of a plot of the 1960's batman episode with the Riddler. The one where Batman hides in a safe to escape the explosion. Even as a Kid i was like oh come on that won't work.
I remember having that VHS as well, but while it led to the Riddler being my brother's favorite Batman villain, Scarecrow will always hold that spot for me.

The debut of The Riddler. The animation was incredible. Voiced by Jon Glover (pre-Smallville Lionel Luthor, Batman & Robin). This was the start of a more cold, calculated Edward Nygma. Not as wacky or overly crazy like Frank Gorshin in the 1960s series. Good riddles too. Really brought out Batman & Robin's intellect. Can't wait for y'all to see more of Nygma in this.
Logically one would think it would harder to write for an intelligent character, because one must write and think intelligently. Now imagine how hard it may be to write for an supposedly genius villain, whose plan is not only ingenious enough to seem terrifying or formidable, but the solution the hero makes is rivaling enough to fairly thwart it, yet is poetic or beautiful enough to be conveyed simply to an normal-human level audience without confusion… I’d imagine to write for a Riddler that is not just ‘100 riddles’ books or a hacker, one must know how to create a dastardly plan that seems impossible yet exciting, and create satisfying solution that wraps it all with a pretty bow. Now puting that in the context of early 2000s cartoons, I’m not surprised that there is still even in this classic series, and in near all Batman media, that a modern Riddler still has not seen a perfect justice to his character. Ironically enough, it makes Riddler one of those characters that a writer is forced to write extremely well in order for the story to work. Joker for 90% of his character just requires chaos and laughing teeth for Joker stories to work because Joker doesn’t want to be taken so seriously anyway. Riddler require those subtleties, because we won’t take him seriously if we don’t have a good reason to.
0:51 Same Rick. I had three vhs which all were all focused on one villain each. One was Riddler with this episode and Riddlers Reform. The 2nd was Two-Face with Shadow of the Bat part 1&2. And the 3rd was Joker with Christmas with the Joker and The Laughing Fish (my introduction to Harley) They were a collecting called The Adventures of Batman and Robin with another vhs of Robin’s Reckoning part 1&2, I didn’t have that one.
According to Eric Radomski, he directed this episode as a result of the network not wanting to pay for an extra director, leading to him and Bruce Timm splitting seven episodes that weren't previously assigned to anyone, and adding them to their normal workloads.
Rogues appearances so far... - The Mob (Thorne, etc): 8 - Joker: 7 - Two-Face: 5 - Catwoman: 5 - Poison Ivy: 4 - Scarecrow: 3 - Evil business men: 3 - Penguin: 3 - Manbat/woManbat: 3 - Clayface: 2 - Mad Hatter: 2 - Killer Croc: 2 - Harley: 2 - Evil Robots: 2 - Riddler: 1 - Hugo Strange: 1 - Mr Freeze: 1 - Clock King: 1 - Dr Moreau: 1 - Evil Ninja: 1 - Captain Hook: 1 - Mad Bomber: 1 - Wolfman: 1 Best Riddler, like many is Arkham City. There are at least two more major villains I can think of off the top of my head that haven't shown up yet.
The biggest issue with the Riddler is that he’s only as smart as the people writing him and it’s really had to write him as the genius he’s apparently supposed to be without depending on information there’s no way the viewer could have
John glover is that actor that just pops up in Dc projects every now and then Scientist in B&R Riddler in btas Lionel luthor smallville Shazam movie Was in one episode in Lucifer 😅
Radomski wasn't the biggest fan of the Riddler or the episode's title, and lobbied for Alan Burnett to change the latter, but he wouldn't budge. "I fought to get that changed and no one would change it." On the Riddler, he said "we just couldn't convince the writers that the Riddler might set something up as simple as a bomb in somebody's office. It had to be complicated. So, that posed a real problem because you have 22 minutes to establish the character, and they suddenly put in these complex riddles that Batman must figure out. And, of course, he immediately figures them out, and that destroys the whole mystery of Batman as a detective, because all he does is think for a minute and he has the answer. That really didn't work for me, but I did the best I could with it."
This is one of my personal favorite episodes of the show, great intro for The Riddler & like Rick, I too have had 2 of his episodes on VHS from a flea market from back in the day
Riddle me this: What's green, difficult to write and desired by all? Like with puzzle games, the trick in writing a good Riddler story is creating riddles that are complicated without using too much moon logic as seen in the 60s series. I like how he gets away by planning ahead. Glover is great here- he sounds like a more mean-spirited Jack Skellington.
Alternatively, you use riddles where the textbook answer is easy to solve but the Riddler has twisted it e.g. "What burns paper?" and the Riddler's answer is "Little." since many things can _ignite_ paper.
Highly disagree, but to each their own. I thought Blade Runner & Dune were long & boring but it’s about the nuanced story in the directing. I didn’t mind the Zodiac take on Riddler. It made more sense to use him that way in a detective noir film. I hope we get something like that mixed with a Knives Out whodunnit mystery when the Hobgoblin is introduced in the MCU. I wish the riddles in The Batman were more clever tho, but I do prefer the theatrical version of Riddler overall. I really liked the Telltale one with the hooded suit & sharp❔cane.

Makes sense. I can definitely see how he would be a challenging villain to write for as opposed to someone like the penguin or two face or even joker

Well if I'm honest Jim Carrey's version of the Riddler is more reminiscent of the 1966 Frank gorshin version of The Riddler

Eric Radomski believes that using Spain based studio La Piz Azul made the episode "come off real cartoony compared to other episodes."
