I just got this camera in a value pack from HSN for $600. Pack included 2 lenses, nikon camera bag, class10 SD card, and the wifi dongle. I was so relieved to see how honest this review was and it really just reaffirmed how good I felt about such a big purchase. Definitely considering getting the 35mm lens to pair with it.
You are by far the best on reviews and anything regarding cameras here on TH-cam. I am new to SLR's and your great help, it seems you are very dedicated. Thanks for the help!
I just bought this camera yesterday in a bundle pack deal. But anyways. I can't express how much this vid helps me and gives me so much enthusiasm to learn all about photography. Like you said its a great starter one and thanks alot for making this video!!!
this helped so much now im for sure what camera im going to get thanks man & is there a way you can turn up the blur or make it more blurry in the back round ?
I have this camera, and I honestly have seen more people at parks, zoos, etc. with this camera than I ever would have believed. Must be one of Nikons best sellers.
Have used the Nikon D3200 for 4 years now. It has been an excellent camera to learn on. It is as tough as nails, yet delicate enough for quality pictures. With the D3200 you can challenge your creativity using ISO, aperture, and shutter settings.
D3200 is my first camera, had it for allmost a year now and I really enjoy it, been learning alot from your vids Jared! Thanks alot was even photographer in a confirmation for my brother in law to practice! And it is so fun to take photo of everything!!
I like the way you said - "Make a choice, select the camera and be happy with it". A lot of us DSLR newbies get ourselves confused about which camera to purchase first and figuring out the specs of various different models will only confuse us more. That being said, it's all about the lenses in the end. Cheers and thanks for making such informative videos!
i Just bought the Nikon D3200 yesterday and yes i am new at this so i find your videos Mr. Jared Polin very very helpful and i am hoping in a few days or weeks i will be able to fully enjoy and maximize the capabilities both of this camera and myself. Thank you!!
This was my first 'exfrosure' to Jared 2 years ago. I ended up buying the d3200 after comparing his review to other reviews. Thanks for all the kick butt videos, Fro!
Wow Jared!!! That's an amazing help doing the review and the D3200 special video. Even though that I have the D90, but if I were a beginner looking for a good camera, this video for sure will help! Thank Jared, and I wish you all the best
This camera together with the Tokina 12-24mm f4, the 35mm f1.8, the 55-200mm or 55-300mm and you are golden in terms of lenses. The Tokina is especially awesome, very fun lens! Add a flash, a cheap IR remote, one or two fast SD cards, a good bag, a tripod and maybe a proper camera strap and you have everything you are ever gonna need. I bought all this stuff while I was learning how to take photos and this way it was actually pretty affordable as well! Ya know, learning by doing.
New to discovering my love for taking photos. I am currently focusing on taking photos of local plays/performances. I mainly work with a local improv troupe and a band which means a lot of low light and action shots and I've been using my Galaxy Nexus phone as my camera. I think it's time to upgrade and I am so glad I found this video. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I found it VERY helpful. I will definitely be watching the users guide when I pick this camera up soon.
This is will be my first DSLR because it will be gifted to me very soon... i took a look at the files and i was amazed how clean a 6 yr old camera is!! im very impressed
I´m from Argentina and have the D3200 for a month. I enjoy your show. Thanks for your reviews and interviews. As another viewer wrote to you, I would be glad if you make a show in which you talk about the D3200 or other similar camera with the 18-55 lens that comes with every camera you bought. Greetings!!!
Really, really good video, Jared. None of that comparison business between cameras/brands. You showed how the camera performed in real situation conditions and what users can achieve with it. More of that style of review, please. :)
Dude ! Great video ! Very informative and easy to listen to. You use English nicely. I even like the fro. I picked up a new D3200 quite a while ago. I've just left it on Auto and used it as a "point and shoot" camera. Now I'd like to increase my capabilities enough to, perhaps, match the cameras. Thanks for your time and devotion.
Also with the D3200 you are getting the latest sensor process technologies, as well as a more customer friendly interface...with more in-camera features that allow you to apply specific effects. The higher camera's have this, but more experienced photographers are less likely to use them, thus there's not as much care put in to it as there would be consumers... Just something to consider. I'm personally very impressed with 3200 and 5200 for beginners.
I have to say, I have used the D3200 for four months in the Olympic National Forest shooting landscapes and wildlife and I have had great results from this camera. It has held up through cold weather and mist. I did take care to keep it as protected from Washington rain possible but it still would get a little wet from time to time. The images are crisp and sharp. There were some issues in low light but overall I love this camera. Now I am upgrading to a D7100.
Just got one of these today, not had much chance to take many snaps as battery was charging for 1.5 hours, am well pleased so far and will spend all day tomorrow in the woods snapping away.
Just picked one of these up. Glad to hear it's a great beginner/starter camera as it's my first DSLR. Not so happy to hear the rec on purchasing the 35 1.8, but you're the Pro so I'll invest in one soon. Thanks for all the info. Looking forward to checking out the Users Guide.
Totally true. I've first hand looked at the D3200 and it's phenomenal for the price point. The extra pixels give you room to crop your compositions if needs be. Just a shame about that back LCD panel makes manual focus during video recording a touch awkward.
Hey Jared thanks for this review and the tutorial. I'm a newbie and this camera turned out perfect for me. I just got it today, and I'm still fooling with it, but your help with this review and the quick tips helped me out a lot. Thanks for the vids!
Nice review, Jared. Clear and pragmatic. I think 24MP is nice but not compelling. The D3100 remains available and is cheaper, and its 14.2 MP is enough. Probably the most compelling reason to get the D3200 is increased versatility due to the external microphone input (only way to get good video audio). Pity it doesn't have a tilting screen.
Very good video im a canon user myself but i always watch your videos because your not bias in anyway and the way you talk about not over analyse images is just so damn right a lot of people on forums drone on about pixel peeping way too much.
Jared, You can change the settings in LR4 so that it renders all the 1:1 zooms beforehand so that when you are editing photos, you don't have to sit there and wait for it to load your image. It renders everything when you start up lightroom so you still have to wait then, just not in the middle of editing.
Great review. Professional, to-the-point, hands-on. Very well done! I think you are very right about the whole "not over analyzing it" idea. I am about to get my first DSLR and have been using some hours researching what model to get. I have landed on a choice between the d3200 and the Canon 600d, and the more detail you research, the more difficult the choice becomes!
Hey, I do own a Nikon D3200 and its great. He asked which BODY is better, D3200 or D5200, and D5200 is a little more advanced in certain aspects, that difference does not worth it right now in terms of money.
Great reviews and instructional videos Jared. I'm new to photography and currently using a friend's backup (Canon 50D & 85mm F/1.8 lens) he pushed into my hands a few weeks ago to get me started until picking up my own. Yes, I have been over complicating the decision process bouncing between a Nikon D3300, D5300, D5500, D7000 and now a D3200 (thanks to this video). My main reasons for considering the D5300 and higher models was the number of auto focus points, shutter speed (D7000) and articulating screen (for odd angles). After seeing this, even the D3200 would give me more than enough options to keep me moving and shooting for awhile, thanks!
I have a d5200. I would go estoy get an older model and use your leftover money for lenses. a crappy body with an amazing lens is better than an amazing camera with a crappy lens.
+Lee Cason That's what I'm going to do. The extra features I was looking for aren't essential to me learning to shoot and I've recently seen some great work on 'entry' level cameras.
I have NO experience other than taking my standard digital camera out and taking shots. I just bought this camera and can't wait to get started, I really love wildlife Photography and want to start learning how to use this camera properly and get the best out of my images.
I just got a refurbished D5100 and a 35mm prime lens last week (which was Jared's lens rec a year ago) and it is great with the 14-bit color. The colors and the screen tipped my choice in its favor, but the D3200 is lighter, has newer features and captures more detail with the megapixels.
Very solid information. I just believe the SD card he recommended was decent, why not go for class 10, and look for anything above 60MB with 32GB of storage or higher. They are fairly inexpensive and and we could always use the additional storage. *Then again he did record this in 2012 which the prices and information may have been much more different from now. (5 years later)
I bought this camera several years ago and it does work great for a beginner, it also takes great video. I would suggest if you’re going to just use the kit, that you get a separate mic. The built-in mic is very tin like sounding.
At this point its not about the MP its about the quality of the images you get from a sensor. Does anyone need it no, do I have it in the D4 no, do we have control over it no. Its a perfect beginner camera for the money.
I'm a bit of a newbie at this too but i got advice from a professional photographer who i'm friends with and he said he started on the 3200 and he said you can get any body, it's the lenses you choose that capture the image quality and picture that you want, look on amazon or on nikon's online site and see which lens gives the type of picture you want.
Loved the review, now i am convinced i will buy the D3200 as my very first digital reflex camera. I am looking forward to the instruction video once i get it.
I did! Both and none at the same time! Nikon D3200 looks to be better for shooting photos, the noise looks more acceptable, but Canon has better features for video recording. If you dont mind very much for video go on Nikon. If you do, go on Canon. They are both great cameras and actually gives you almost the same results. In the end you really cant figure out much difference. It depend on how much you want to invest you money.
I have a nikon coolpix p520 and i know that is a bridge and i use it for product photography this is my second digital cam. When i first got the p520 i didn't know much about lenses and whatnot. I always learn things on my own. I am a graphic design and i checked out reviews of the d3200. I get great results with my p520 but i know i need to really upgrade to a dslr. Also im just getting into lenses and i know i need to get a macro lens but i really enjoy the challenge of testing out the lenses. You show me this and i really feel this is the next cam for me. I really enjoy your videos. I am really getting into photography more and more each day. I work for a jewelry company right now with only 2 1.2 years into photography and havent taken any class. all i learn is from tutorials and i really want to thank you for your videos. on a side note i try using canon but i am a nikon man. :)
In terms of image quality (cripsness, clearness, noise), this beats my D90 every day in the week. Though my camera win in some other parts, size, weight, secondary display. It's cool to see how much the cameras are developing in such a short period of time!
I think yes. I attend a media university and we use professional cameras there. But I am looking for a DSLR to record some of my own movies (and pictures). It is really handy you can hook up an external microphone. You will going to have to do that eventually if your videos become more professional. Hope this helped a bit.
Thank you very much for your time spent on this review. It's been very helpful. I was going to get the 3100 and then saw the 3200. I'm just starting out on photography and will be taking some classes next semester for photography. After this review this will be my first SLR. I'm getting the red one. Thanks again.
I have been wanting to purchase a DSLR for a while now & i recently found out about this camera so i have been wanting to purchase it but i wasnt sure. Your video helped alot thanks man :)
Great review! Just picked up a D5100, but still love your videos. I learn something each time. Also, how about a rug in that big open room? It could really tie the room together.
Good review, Jared. I am now torn between this one and the Nikon D5100. Maybe I should wait some more to see if the D5100 will be updated. I am just getting back into DSLRs after moving into Micro 4/3.
I also recommend the Digital filmaker magazine as it has great tips and information about DSLR's. I'm only 14 but by reading a ton about DSLR cameras and things like aperture my knowledge has increased massively. Hope this also helps :)
I would go with the 3200, the mic jack is a huge feature, at least IMO. The 3100 and 3200 are essentially the same camera except for the processing engine and MP count.
I've got a D3200, i've had it for some time, its easy to use, It's better to get a cheap body (but still is a good camera) because you will be spending the most money on the glass, save up for a D3200 and a bit more to purchase a high quality lens, like the Nikkor 50mm lens I purchased one for £40. Also, if you want to take photos stick with the kit lens that comes with D3200 but if your a filmer I recommend prime lenses. Hope this helps, I dont mind answering more questions if you have them.
good stuff bro. i'm definitely a beginner so this was a good confirmation that I got the right camera. You rebel- running "small electronics" during landing on the plane. : )
Costco deal. I went that route. If you add up all the extras individually, it exceeds the price tag they're asking. The only thing I am finding though, is that you will rarely ever need the 55-200mm lens, which retails for around $250. I'm actually trying to sell mine... while making a little profit.
JARED WAS AT FRY'S AND I WAS GOING TO BUY THIS CAMERA. BUT I GOT COLD FEET. AFTER YOUR REVIEW I THINK I WILL PURCHASE IT AFTER ALL. $476.00 BUCKS. THANKS AND KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK.
Hi ive just bought a NIKON D3200 and have pretty much been learning how to use it watching your videos! could you PLEASE make a video explaining how to take pics of moving objects?
I allready bought the d3200 with the 18-105mm Kit lens It's my first DSLR (I'm 14 and from Germany). It feels so grat I'll buy the 35mm 1.8 later! Nice Video! :D
I am probably not going to be doing a review of the D4. I wont be making user guides for these cameras as they are Pro cameras.
A massive picture of yourself on the wall is a nice touch. The girls must swoon.

Yes it is.
Pretty good. I have a sample video in my YT video collection somewhere if you want to check it out.
Both of those thinks I used my D3200
Still using my D3200 in 2020 with models and get a lot of compliments! No one realizes its a old beginner camera at all.
really? im about to buy it from a friend , i want to start in this world
Have used the Nikon D3200 for 4 years now. It has been an excellent camera to learn on. It is as tough as nails, yet delicate enough for quality pictures. With the D3200 you can challenge your creativity using ISO, aperture, and shutter settings.

i am working on it still filming another thing.
there will not be a d7000 review. Its 2 years old now.
Thanks so much this really helped me x) I'm turning 13 and I can't wait to get this camera!!!
happy 21st birthday :D
I´m from Argentina and have the D3200 for a month. I enjoy your show. Thanks for your reviews and interviews. As another viewer wrote to you, I would be glad if you make a show in which you talk about the D3200 or other similar camera with the 18-55 lens that comes with every camera you bought. Greetings!!!
its not our computers its LR4. They just put out an update tonight so we will see if that fixes anything or not.
Just bought this for £259, comes with the VRII lens. I upgraded from the Pen EPL1. Love the simplicity of use of this camera and your vids.
Really, really good video, Jared. None of that comparison business between cameras/brands. You showed how the camera performed in real situation conditions and what users can achieve with it. More of that style of review, please. :)

stunning review. you keep getting better! i hope you stick with those serious reviews!!
definitely worth watching it till the end.
awesome review Jayrod ! really helped me choose the camera, thank you!
Its not that its lightroom 4
I have to say, I have used the D3200 for four months in the Olympic National Forest shooting landscapes and wildlife and I have had great results from this camera. It has held up through cold weather and mist. I did take care to keep it as protected from Washington rain possible but it still would get a little wet from time to time. The images are crisp and sharp. There were some issues in low light but overall I love this camera. Now I am upgrading to a D7100.

Definitely the best and most unbiased review out there
Totally true.
IT could be, each camera is different.
Jared,
You can change the settings in LR4 so that it renders all the 1:1 zooms beforehand so that when you are editing photos, you don't have to sit there and wait for it to load your image. It renders everything when you start up lightroom so you still have to wait then, just not in the middle of editing.
@phenomena17 1080p it does -30fps, 720p -60fps. Also, a 32gb memory stick holds approx. RAW photos at 24.2MP.
I must say ,the quality of this video is amazing
Great review. Professional, to-the-point, hands-on. Very well done!
I think you are very right about the whole "not over analyzing it" idea. I am about to get my first DSLR and have been using some hours researching what model to get. I have landed on a choice between the d3200 and the Canon 600d, and the more detail you research, the more difficult the choice becomes!
In short: It doesn't matter much. Go here: www.kenrockwell.com/tech/nikon-vs-canon.htm

Really!? You linked a "Ken Rockwell" review on a Froknowsphoto Video!?
"Some people just want to watch the world burn..."
After seeing this, even the D3200 would give me more than enough options to keep me moving and shooting for awhile, thanks!
don't get something for autofocus points. as soon as you get good, get out of auto. jared has plenty of vids on not using auto.
I have a d5200. I would go estoy get an older model and use your leftover money for lenses. a crappy body with an amazing lens is better than an amazing camera with a crappy lens.
+Lee Cason honestly not estoy sorry
+Lee Cason That's what I'm going to do. The extra features I was looking for aren't essential to me learning to shoot and I've recently seen some great work on 'entry' level cameras.
G9 with the 5300 or 5200. Dokt go any more expensive otherwise the lenses you get don't be as good.
I have NO experience other than taking my standard digital camera out and taking shots. I just bought this camera and can't wait to get started, I really love wildlife Photography and want to start learning how to use this camera properly and get the best out of my images.

reviews should be like this not like the guy from canada that only base his review from charts... Awesome Job Jared!
At this point its not about the MP its about the quality of the images you get from a sensor. Does anyone need it no, do I have it in the D4 no, do we have control over it no. Its a perfect beginner camera for the money.

i cant wait to get this camera friday
And also, this videos are awesome Jared. Well said, well covered and well produced. Good job!
Thank you so much! The information in this video was extremely useful for me!!!!!! This is the best review of any product I have ever seen on TH-cam.
Thank you very much for your time spent on this review. It's been very helpful. I was going to get the 3100 and then saw the 3200. I'm just starting out on photography and will be taking some classes next semester for photography. After this review this will be my first SLR. I'm getting the red one. Thanks again.
do you still recommend this camera for beginners? i mean i there something newer like this?
d3300
This is one of the best, if not the best ever VALUE for MONEY cameras. Incredible camera. I am buying it.
I have been wanting to purchase a DSLR for a while now & i recently found out about this camera so i have been wanting to purchase it but i wasnt sure. Your video helped alot thanks man :)
The shot of the Goodyear Blimp was really good
thanks Jered, I bought this as my first camera and I am really loving it!
That was a sneaky move having the camera on during landing Fro - nice covert work!
I would go with the 3200, the mic jack is a huge feature, at least IMO. The 3100 and 3200 are essentially the same camera except for the processing engine and MP count.
This is a really good review. Clearly states what to expect from the camera. Thanks!
Is that the 27in. iMac? Just upgraded to 16gb ram and it handles video editing, photoshop / lightroom like a beast. Night and day difference.
I have a Nikon p500 but its time I moved up to a DSLR . I love this d3200 . Im going to get it WHEN its on sale .
Very good review. One of the cams in my sites. Like the fact it has a mic input, not a selling point, but will come in handy.
update the firmware.
You really helped me!Thank you!I was undecided wich camera should I choose:D5100 or D3200,and now I decided♥
Thank you for this video. It was of great help. Being a beginner I am looking forward to buy this.
im into more portrait photography.. i have this camera.. what do you think is the best lens to use on this camera for portraits?
what camera did you shoot your video with?
Just bought my first slr and its a nikon d3200 just starting videos are extremely helpfull thanks jared
good stuff bro. i'm definitely a beginner so this was a good confirmation that I got the right camera. You rebel- running "small electronics" during landing on the plane. : )
Costco deal. I went that route. If you add up all the extras individually, it exceeds the price tag they're asking. The only thing I am finding though, is that you will rarely ever need the 55-200mm lens, which retails for around $250. I'm actually trying to sell mine... while making a little profit.
i just got one for around 300$ i have to say im quite pleased with it!
Thank you so much. I just bought the camera and you have made me extra excited to use it.
Nice explanations given by a very professional and pleasant guy. Grettings from Brazil.
I just bought AF-S DX 35mm F1.8 G lens and it is awesome and makes the camera so much better. Its also great for low light and Bokeh!!
Thank you for sharing Jared. The video is very informative and you are a very talented speaker.
Great review, definitely going to recommend this to customers who want something to get them into the DSLR world.
I just bought a Nikon d3200 with the 18-105mm lens. I can't wait to get shooting! :)
thanks for responding to my question, very well appreciated.
great review buddy, I'm buying this camera just because of this video, I'm new to photography
I allready bought the d3200 with the 18-105mm Kit lens
