  • In this video, I discuss basic knowledge about how the blood pressure behaves when people engage in exercise, whether static exercise, like weightlifting, or aerobic exercise like running or cycling. I also discuss the latest document on the topic issued by the American Heart Association.

As someone who has been trying to control my high blood pressure, I notice a direct correlation between how much I exercise and how good my number looks. When I'm missing workouts, it adds about 10 to 15 to my baseline numbers.

I'm 19 years old and I have high blood pressure...everything turns upside down for me since lockdown...I first checked randomly my b.p on 2020 and it was high..since then it's been high...2020 was the worst thing that happened to me I was very anxious ..psychological things and I suffered a lot n stuff ..I think that is the one that causes me high blood pressure... I checked everything if it's a secondary hypertension but all the tests came fine...I workout 4 or 5 days a week...don't smoke, drink nothing..so it's most likely primary hypertension which sucks... anyways if u came all here reading it..thanks love you all.... if u have a same story like me pls share🖤

Disclaimer - this is not medical advice. Just what I have tried. First thing I would say is to try a low sodium diet. Cut you sodium to 1000-1500mg of salt a day. This helped me tremendously. Also cut out all caffeine which includes coffee, energy drinks, and sodas with caffeine.
Also get your doctor to order these blood tests: a basic metabolic panel to check your electrolyte levels and creatine. Low potassium/hypokalemia can cause high blood pressure. If so a renal panel for your kidneys and aldosterone blood work is needed. Research those terms and their connection to high blood pressure. If you have borderline high or high calcium then you should get Parathyroid (PTH) blood work. Make sure you say PARAthyroid which is distinct from your thyroid. Do not let them tell you it is too rare to test for.
The most important thing is that you research these terms with your parents and bring them to your appointments. Many doctors will write you off as just having primary hypertension and want to put you on pills without ruling out all the possible causes. DO NOT let them say NO. You are far too young to have high blood pressure which increases the likelihood of secondary hypertension. Tell them you will go to another doctor who will do their due diligence and cares about your health. In my case I didn’t have many options and ran my own blood tests through labcorp. If your doctor is that resistant you may have to spend a couple hundred bucks to run our own blood tests and then show them to your doctor.
Good luck and good health to you young man.

I been cycling since last 2 months. since last 20 days i was having cough. I went to Dr for treatment. He checked my Blood Pressure and the reading was 150/90. The thing is i had been cycling. I did a 24 Km (100 Minutes) bike ride one and a half hour before going to Dr. Infact i went to doctor on my cycle. Is there any chance that these reading are possible after a high intensity long ride. Usually i feel blood gushing through my body till 3 to 4 hours after every long ride. There is some muscle soreness for 1 hour and then i feel active and energetic for next 2 hours. Then every thing comes back to normal the 4th hour.

For seated resting, my BP was 123/66. Systolic changes looked normal, but diastolic was about 90 for easy exercise and went up to over 100 for more intense exercise. After some seated rest, went back down to 120/80. What might be going on? I made an appointment with my GP.

wonders how long the blood pressure takes to come down after the exercise. If a person lifts heavy low rep. sets of weights, sprints, and runs 8 km before a steam bath at 40 Celsius, how long is the expected time for the BP to be at what levels? A strange 146/99 at 97 bpm number was measured two hours after the morning exercise and spa, still on an empty stomach since the night before with the low carb. beef diet. Although a magnesium threonate pill was taken after the exercise and a green coffee bean extract and a yohimbine HCL were taken before the morning exercise. The usually post run numbers are 115/ 72 with 92 bpm. Resting bpm is usually at 60 or even 58. Thanks for the ideas.

    Hi!
I am wondering how long it takes for the body to adjust to "exercise mode" (meaning higher blood pressure and diluted blood vessels).
And going from zero to full power before the body has adjusted - could that be harmful or is it just tough because you do not get enough oxygen and energy to the muscles? And what is a perfect warmup in terms of time and intensity if your plan is to do an intensive workout like playing squash or badminton. Thanks for the content!

      Hi Catherine,
The standard way to measure the blood pressure is at rest, before exercise. The value after exercise can be misleadingly low. Now, we do recommend exercise to lower the blood pressure, but some people still have high resting blood pressure even if they exercise regularly. It sounds to me like your husband should be seen by his doctor.

    Hello doc
I have a prob, I have anxiety attack and I DHS stress test 2 years ago that was normal and another yesterday which this time I was really under stress while doing the test I even had panick attack while doing it this time my blood pressure while exercising was 210/105 at 102% my resting bp at home morning and night is 117/77 sometime in random its 140/90 on first reading then second and third normal under 130-80.
My question is can anxiety cause the stress test to be inaccurate, she was scaring me during the test and bp was going down and up while I responded to stress.
Went down 129.86 then up 145-89 when she was telling me you not doing well.
    I know it’s complex question .
She wants me to take lercandipin 5mg , I still have doubt that I have BP I’m thinking my anxiety disorder is the cause of all this can I be right ?
Is BP suppose to be within normal all day ? Even when you work ? Or Beeing stress?
I thought stress test normal range was more like 220-100.
I’m 47 man exercise not overweight
Last question does medication do avoid BP complications and raise life expectancy because many studies states otherwise
    Thanks

There is many many many guidelines for professionals which all tell that making patient laugh or stressed while measuring is going to rise their blood pressure reading. There is even a commonly used term "white coat hypertension" which means that when you are in doctor's office you get so nervous that your blood pressure goes out of roof. And while at home, you have normal reading. That medical person is not very well trained. I hope that you did not take that medication 👍

I am curious about spurious systolic hypertension, and the non invasive ways to confirm that aortic pressure is “normal”. My level of physical activity has risen a lot in the last two months and my BP is at 150/90, but resting HR is at 54bpm; therfore I am convinced that a brachial/wrist BP with that value shouldn’t be a health concern. I already eat healthy and aside from taking medication (which I wouldn’t agree to) I don’t see how that arm BP would come down. any thoughts? video links? or sources that you might know of? :)

    • @Athleticheartsf
      @Athleticheartsf  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Johann,
I don't think you can dismiss the blood pressure value simply because your heart rate is slow. If your blood pressure is routinely 150/90 range, I would consider this to be in the range where it would be prudent to see how your cardiovascular system is handling it. To get an idea of what I mean, you can read this article athleticheartsf.com/free-webinars-2/ (Note, we no longer offer the webinars at this time).
The best way to check the central aortic pressure is via a pulse wave analysis. We offer that service at Athletic Heart SF, but it is not commonly available elsewhere.
      Hope that helps.

      Dr. Accad

here’s is one such an article regarding the research i was reading up on.
I will certainly consider a different sort of heart heath assessment, because the elevated systolic blood pressure alone as a means of diagnosis feels unscientific.
my blood pressure was infact much lower until i started a vigorous (for me) training program. With the exercise and diet changes (good ones) my HR has dropped by around 20bpm in the last 6months and the brachial SSBP rose.
Because of what lead to the rising of it, it is hard to think of it as concerning.
I will take the advice to heart and thank you doctor for sharing the information. Your reply was well received and much appreciated.

      Hi Nolan,
The video addressed the question of the blood pressure during actual exercise. During the recovery phase (i.e., in the first hour or two after vigorous exercise), the blood pressure normally falls--both systolic and diastolic--because the blood vessels are relaxed and dilated. Your blood pressure therefore seems high, and I recommend that you discuss the matter with your physician.

What if after running, the diastolic rises as well. I’ve been recovering from a multiple bone fracture in my foot and haven’t ran in 3 months and started working out again about a month ago. And this morning i went for my first power walk and about 5 min after getting home from a quarter mile walk i checked my bp and it was 150 systolic which is expected but my diastolic was 101.

My blood pressure before exercise (which was just walking for an hour) 156/98 and my blood pressure after exercise was 78/45. Is this something I should bring up to my doctor?
My blood pressure isn’t always that high before exercise, but my blood pressure fluctuates all day from high to low to normal to high and so on. I have recently had an echocardiogram for my irregular heartbeat, chest pains, shortness of breath, and lightheadedness, but my pcp called yesterday to tell me it was normal. Should I still tell them about the blood pressure before and after my exercise since everything’s normal?

Hello, I am 25 and my regular BP is 110/70. When I am having panic attack it raises to 140/70 or 160/100 (full-blown).
I did some mixed aerobics and isolated exercise like push ups and jogging and I took my blood pressure right away while my heart is beating hard and fast and I got 155/90 BP, I exerted 75-90% endurance and strength.
When I am doing moderate endurance exercise, I am hitting 145/75.
When I am doing light exercise, I am reaching 110/70-120/70.
My doctor told me not to exercise if my BP is raised (HBP) because my brain's blood vessels will explode.
Should I slowly walk while having panic attack? Can I still exercise and lift light-moderate weights? Is it dangerous to reach 160 systolic while exercising?
I am already done in 24 hour holter with HRV and 2D echo cardiogram plus ECG theb the result is ok and they told me to go to psychiatrist.
BTW, Can I exercise light-moderate or is there a very strict limitation?
I take my BP like 40 times a day left and right arm. I am very anxious that when I exercise, I should not get the hypertension level systolic 130+.
I sound paranoid but your reply will surely be appreciated, greetings from Philippines! Thank you.

Wennie Sasotona fuck your doc, keep working out to get over panic attacks, especially steady state cardio over 30min in duration. In my 20’s I was ready to end my life because of my panic attacks and my docs pumped me full of meds. My cure was getting into running (I already had a strength training regiment), but steady state cardio can relieve tension and provide a reset for our nervous system. A combination of cardio, strength, and yoga training would be the ultimate in overcoming nervous system disorders.

Hello my dear wennie if am nit wrong, you have become a slave of your negative emotions, your doctor told you not to do exercise, which i think totallt wrong and that is why always get worried about your bp and when you are in panic attack, you always think if i move fast, it will raise my bp further and this also makes your panic more worse. Am i right, you think this way ? If yes, then you a victim of psychiatric problem. My dear your thoughts affects your bp in great way, so you MUST DO YOGA AND PRANAYAAM BREATHING EXERCISE TO MAKE YOU CALM AND PEACEFUL, THIS WILL DO MIRACLES.

    • @Athleticheartsf
      @Athleticheartsf  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

kanaanlebanon Is your resting diastolic BP often around 55? It seems to be on the low side for a 22 year old, but not necessarily abnormal. I would simply have a doctor at some point to listen to your heart sounds to make sure you don't have a condition that leads to low diastolic BP. Thank you!

    • @kanaanlebanon
      @kanaanlebanon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes its always arround 55-60...my resting HR is arround 45 bpm. I do exercise a lot and used to play a lot of sports. I've been to the cardiologist before to run some tests and he said everything was ok. It's always good to have a second opinion. I will call to book an appointement just to be safe.
      Thank you!
