  • After a long 17-year wait, LeRoy Butler is finally being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Super Bowl champion and four-time First-Team All-Pro never seems to get the respect he deserves; a deep dive on why he's probably better than you thought.

It's great to see more safeties in the NFL, which for a while there was a drought. Butler was a menace, and as a 49ers fan he was a constant terror when they played the Packers. Caused a lot of problems for Steve Young and company. Uggh. But he deserves the honor of being in the HOF.

Mindsets in the NFL are slow to change, but we *have* been seeing them change at perhaps an increased rate, in recent years, and one of those that also needs changing is how "we" (/the people with voting or narrative-shaping power) value peak vs longevity. We don't have to be putting 1 year wonders in the hall, but rather think of it like "if you had a 5 year Super Bowl window, who would you want on that team?".
You put together a great case that showed that such dynamic ability is what makes the most difference at any given moment. Shanahan's own words agreed - the people on the field know who they're looking out for (and not to dunk on Lynch, but I'm sure he was at best 3rd on Tampa's D, behind Sapp and Brooks).

Yep! Nail on the head, as usual. I think a 4-5+ year peak is how I usually evaluate players. It’s a solid enough sample size to get a good feel on who a player is outside of sample size/surrounding cast traps, but you’re also not tied down by standard lengthy volume numbers.
