Nell Carter just shined wherever you put her. Soap acting is a whole different discipline of acting and she transitioned very well!

Nell left the pre-Broadway production of the workshop that would go on to be the musical "Dreamgirls" (she was originally cast as the character Effie White BEFORE Jennifer Holliday) to join "Ryan's Hope". She briefly returned to the show after her run on "RH" ended, only to leave again for good once she landed the lead role on "Gimme A Break". The rest, as they say is history... 🙂

It wasn't the role on Gimme A Break that landed it was the role on Sheriff Lobo. They love her on that show and after it was canceled the got her a show of her in
own . Then a deal to bring Ain't Misbehavin' to TV with the Original Broadway Cast.

Her *Gimme A Break!* costar Dolph Sweet was on a P&G soap, *Another World,* years earlier. Unfortunately, most of his appearances on that show are gone forever because P&G didn’t have the foresight to see if their tapes until the end of the 1970s, and the producers of the show did apparently from the get-go.
