    This would be the first ever ride with two Urals. New guy Philippe contacted Riley and wanted to go off-roading for the first time ever in his shiny new fuel injected Ural. After a quick look at all the improvements Ural has made since Riley bought his Gear Up in 2008 the group set out for the trails. Super Dave makes another appearance on his BMW F650, 7000, 800, whatever that thing is, to complete the trio. Surprisingly we stop at Tim Hortons before arriving at the little sandpit. Philippe uses two wheel drive for the first time and makes it up the hill. We decide to check out the infamous Black Lake. I had mentioned that the water would be too deep to fjord in the Urals. When we get to the end of the disappearing road Riley decides to roll into the water and see how deep it is. Philippe takes this as his cue that we are crossing and goes for it. He floods out his new ride. At the same time Riley’s Ural seems to have lost all it’s gears. Time to pull out wrenches and get busy.

    А сейчас Урал стоит как бюджетный российский автомобиль. И это очень печально!

    We really enjoy getting up to the Algonquin area once a year or two - fun riding and gives us the chance to have some proper poutine. Glad both Urals survived the swim, must be the Russians know how to seal up the bits that can't get wet - there are videos of them crossing water that required snorkel kits that bring the intake up the back of the rider (whole bike under water).

    I’ve wanted one for awhile. Seems akin to off-roading my old Subaru. No gears, so give’r! Wonder how they do in the winter? We only get about two feet of very dry, powdery snow each winter. There’s a red sidecar rig here in town, but can’t get close enough to ID it as a Ural.

    • @AwesomePlayers
      @AwesomePlayers  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can't really play in the snow here much because of the salt. The few time I have had it in the sno it has been fun and the limit has been ground clearance. Not much room under the pipes.

    You just screwed up a shift and had something between gears
    The Ural has no problem going in water over the gas tank as they are designed that way

    Don't worry to much about it, again designed to go off road and will go way more places the next a regular off-road bike

    Heartfelt greetings guys from Quebec expat !
    Always glad to see sights from La Belle Province!!
    I AM CURIOUS!!
    I'm curious as to what have become of that air leak by the spark plug of the drowned Ural. I myself have a 2WD Dnepr with SV engine.
    The danger of drowning a running engine is that since water doesn't compress once it's sucked into the cylinder something usually has to give. Either the connecting rod, gasket or the... head gets damaged. Any news on that persistent bubbling - even with a new compression ring?
    The Germans were thought to ford water (up to certain depth of course :) but never to rev the engines while stuck and cut it out completely at the first sign of flooding of the intakes. Salut bye!

    • @AwesomePlayers
      @AwesomePlayers  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apparently he took it to the dealer and all they did was tighten the plug more and the leak went away. We tightened it pretty good and used a new plug so I'm guessing there was a flaw in the seat of the plug or something. I wouldn't want to use too much force on those aluminium threads.

      @rickgraham8701 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I went up that way two years ago. I stayed in Fermont for a couple days. It's funny, in Fermont everyone is French Canadian and a few kilometers down the road in Labrador City everyone is a Newfie.
      FYI Fermont has a strip club. Another story.
      It was a fun trip but the bugs! FUCK! It's no wonder those poor moose are always out on the road.
      Be prepared for literal clouds of black flies. I don't know when would be a good time for the bugs, I think I was there the middle of June, probably the height of black fly season. I figure I'll go in August next time but early on sounds good too.

    I bought new 1995 Sportsman Ural. It has a differential full time 2 wheel drive, if the sidecar wheel spins you don't go. I put a 1974 BMW R60 engine with 1974 R90 top end for more torque and speed, I had no problem keeping up with my Harley riders, flying the chair on right hand and sliding through left hand. I put enough miles on to cause the Sportsman final drive to need rebuilt, unfortunately Ural stopped making the Sportsman final drive, since my Ural was my only transportation, the Ural dealer had a patrol final drive on the shelf, so I put a patrol rear drive on welded necessary items to place the engagement items for 2 wheel drive lock now it handles same as yours. top speed is near 100 mph. still only 30 mpg.

    • @AwesomePlayers
      @AwesomePlayers  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Don. I had read about the full time system. Really seems like that would be the ideal setup with the option to lock the rear diff when needed. 160 km/hr on a Ural must be interesting. My Gear Up has seen 120 km/hr once on a big downhill and it was feeling pretty sketchy. No problems running more power through the transmission?

    • @donbahn1319
      @donbahn1319 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AwesomePlayers The gears in 1995 were heat treated by color, 3 shifts, if one was on the red side - soft, if on the yellow side of orange hard and brittle, in the mid orange just right. I went through several gear sets until I got ones the correct hardness. The Sportsman full time 2 wheel did not have any option to lock the differential.

      @AwesomePlayers  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@donbahn1319 Interesting. Maybe one day the good folks at Ural will make some big changes to the drivetrain. The certainly have done a lot since I started being interested in 2007.

    • @donbahn1319
      @donbahn1319 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AwesomePlayers I doubt it, the cost of making a planetary gear system like the one used on the Sportsman is why they stopped making it and continued only with the Patrol. The patrol uses a sliding spline coupler, much less expensive than the 5 small gears between the outer drive and inner driven system of the Sportsman final drive.

    • @AwesomePlayers
      @AwesomePlayers  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@donbahn1319 They are certainly trying to keep costs down I'm sure. Current system gets it done even if it is unsophisticated. Plus the open differential on the Sportsman would be a problem when stuck. At their current price the new ones are for a different market segment.

    Great video! I've been playing with the idea of getting a Ural sometime this year. There's a new (ish) one at a local dealer, a 2016 (18km) for $17,000 which was won in a raffle and immediately traded by the new owner for a Harley. I have a few bikes and was toying with the idea of getting one mostly for snow riding in winter as I like to ride my XR650L in the snow covered trails but it gets sketchy at times and I usually assume a 50% chance of a low speed "lay-down" per trip. How do you find yours in the snow?
    Given the off road limits of the vehicle (and my lack of common sense) I may choose to find a well used one for around $6-$8K so I don't wreck $20K of machine in it's first year of use. Any insights?

    • @AwesomePlayers
      @AwesomePlayers  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was stuck in the snow on Sunday. Traction was OK with my semi bald tires but ground clearance is low. Certainly not an ATV. I would probably buy used to see if I liked it first. Either way they are a lot of fun and they make everyone you meet smile like no other vehicle I've seen.

    Years ago the service manager at the BMW dealer in Raleigh, North Carolina, told me of having a bike in after a certain off-road incident. The rider had setup for a turn in the mountains but read it wrong, ending up going off the turn, down an embankment, and into a pond. The service manager goes into shop to check of water got into the final drive then comes back out and summons the owner by saying, "who's the U-Boat driver?!"
