Umm...I am black, and I love waffles, fried chicken, and watermelon. What is wrong with saying black people like these foods? These are common parts of soul food, just like greens, smothered pork chops, yams, black-eyed peas, fried catfish, and cornbread, to mention just a few. How is it insulting to say the foods we mastered at cooking wonderfully we enjoy eating? I know Asians that think it's offensive that people assume they eat rice. But, all my Asian friends DO constantly eat rice! I have Mexican friends that are insulted that people assume they eat beans and tortillas. But, all my Mexican friends DO constantly eat those things. How is it insulting to say people eat food that they actually eat often??? Also, if the school was teaching about Italy, would it be wrong to serve spaghetti? If they were teaching about Amish culture, would it be considered wrong to serve Dutch Amish style food? If they were teaching about German Culture, would we be offended if the school served Bratwursts? I doubt it. So, why is it insulting that they served soul food when teaching kids about Black American culture? It isn't wrong. Some of us black of us black people ARE being too sensitive. Also, MOST people agree, even if they are too afraid to publicly admit it (but, they will say it around close friends privately), that they think the LGBTQ community is too sensitive. So, if I was the reporter, I wouldn't say black people aren't being too sensitive if they are only being as sensitive as the LGBTQ community. That's not a good example.

Growing up in a predominantly black neighborhood in the southeast I know for a fact that people fight over who can make the best fried chicken and waffles. Watermelon is awesome on a hot summer day!

Fried chicken and watermelon are stereo types but not traditional foods that are apart of our tradition. Blacks barely ate fried chicken during Jim Crow and during slavery. Watermelon was more of a survival food to get us through the hot summers of the south while share cropping.

When I was in the army they had black history month and the chow hall was serving Soul Food. This was in Germany and most of our unit was from Texas. We wanted to check out soul food. We got in line and saw Southern Cooking. Lot of us white people from Texas got into the homemade cooking and we got teary eyed missing home. Black history month to me is honoring those who have contributed to abolish slavery. Those who suffered because of slavery. Those who fought for equality as a human. Those who suffered for that equality. And for those that today still push forward and get past the negativity and ignorance from others.

For 5 years in my agency I was affirmative chairperson. Celebrating culture was the way to educate everyone to each other’s culture. Hispanic month rice beans chicken tacos, black history chicken watermelon black eye peas etc, Asians history egg rolls rice steam veggies etc. those leading representing the identified culture were of that culture and were responsible to put what ever menu they wanted to celebrate their history. Everyone came out to celebrate and eat the provided culture meals. So…… tell me again what is offensive? Maybe we should serve tacos and rice as cultural food next time we celebrate black history month. Black racist organizers are getting stupider by the day.

When I was in the army they had black history month and the chow hall was serving Soul Food. This was in Germany and most of our unit was from Texas. We wanted to check out soul food. We got in line and saw Southern Cooking. Lot of us white people from Texas got into the homemade cooking and we got teary eyed missing home. Black history month to me is honoring those who have contributed to abolish slavery. Those who suffered because of slavery. Those who fought for equality as a human. Those who suffered for that equality. And for those that today still push forward and get past the negativity and ignorance from others.

Our school never had anything as good a fried chicken, it was always frozen nuggets or Tyson chicken patty sandwiches.

For 5 years in my agency I was affirmative chairperson. Celebrating culture was the way to educate everyone to each other’s culture. Hispanic month rice beans chicken tacos, black history chicken watermelon black eye peas etc, Asians history egg rolls rice steam veggies etc. those leading representing the identified culture were of that culture and were responsible to put what ever menu they wanted to celebrate their history. Everyone came out to celebrate and eat the provided culture meals. So…… tell me again what is offensive? Maybe we should serve tacos and rice as cultural food next time we celebrate black history month. Black racist organizers are getting stupider by the day.
