Nightlife in China: a Shanghai City Bar Street Walk | 4K China 上海酒吧街

- Within China, Shanghai is famous for its nightlife. Compared to other Chinese cities, the nightlife scene in Shanghai should be unparalleled. Or is it? As Shanghai City is still recovering from various lockdowns, the Shanghai of summer 2022 can feel like it’s being rebuild from the ground up. And still, the boys and girls of China’s largest city know where to find their drinks and fun on a weekend night out.
First we walk our way through Maoming North Road, a bar street just off Nanjing West Road, where the constant noise of construction work at night doesn’t seem to bother the locals. This bar street leads to Wujiang Road, a night market where those who prefer shopping over drinking go for their nighttime fun.
We finish our Shanghai night walk on a stretch of Nanjing West Road with luxury brand shops on both sides for a more relaxed evening stroll. Walk east all the way from here and you’ll end up on the Bund (see our previous Shanghai video for that!)

🇨🇳 Chinese introduction: 上海著名的南京路步行街实际分为两段，严格意义上直通外滩的步行街是南京东路，以西藏中路为界，往西还有一条大型shopping mall林立的南京西路，这里也是非常繁华摩登的购物天堂。南京东路步行街和外滩是外地游客朝圣上海滩的不二景点，相较于此，南京西路及其附近的夜市、小吃街、酒吧更是上海本地年轻人休闲购物的聚集地。
本次视频的拍摄地就位于南京街西路及其周边的夜市和酒吧街。这次访沪印象最深的之一是繁华闹市区随处可见的施工围档。个人揣测可能也是在闹市区、人流聚集地，控制大规模人群聚集的一种措施吧，也透露出解封后上海社会中一种似有若无的紧张感。但是懂生活的上海人还是在努力营造和享受这来之不易的夏日休闲时光。

there's a couple of hundred of these 'China nightlife' vids. In all of them I'm seeing something strange: lack of people. The population density wandering around the nightstalls is about the same as my local village. Way less then a western city, and nothing compared to the million+ swarm of Bangkok nightlife.

I visited there before the pandemic. I found it immaculate. Unlike other large cities, you don't find litter or homeless people on the sidewalks. It was amazing. In comparison, San Francisco and Oakland look like 3rd world countries.
You just don't know where the disadvantaged live man, government would force them to leave, many people live without shelter, next time I could lead you there to know another face of SH

My experience when living there in 2019 is that the nightlife is dominated by younger people! I was mid 50s when I was there and felt really old walking around!
One party system may not be bad. Take life expectancy of both China and US as example. In 1950 China life expectancy is about 38 vs US 68. After 71 years, in 2021 China life expectancy is 78.2 vs US 76.1( latest figure by CDC , US life expectancy dropped by 3 in 2020-2021 period from 79.1 originally). China expectancy increase by 40 years while US increase by 8 years only. China life expectancy increase 5 time faster than US.
Also Look at health care by comparing MMA rate( maternal mortality rate): in 1950 China maternal mortality is 1500 women death per 100,000 birth vs US 100 women death per 100,000 births. In 2021, China MMA is 16.1 vs US 23.8 per 100,000 (the lower the number , the better health care service level) .
Infant mortality rate: in 1950 China infant mortality is 195 death per 1000 birth vs US 26.8 death per 1000 births. In 2021, China infant mortality rate drop to 5 per 1000 vs US 5.4 per 1000 birth.
In fact among top 10 population countries, China’s life expectancy is longest 78.2 years old vs US 76.1 and India 70, Indonesia 71.7, Pakistan 67.3, Brazil 75.9, Nigeria 54.7, Bangladesh 72.6, Russia 73.1, Mexico 75.

The cost of living in China is still much lower than in most Western countries. Also, Shanghai is of course one of China's richer cities.

Everyone noticed how clean the Chinese cities are and as a person who lived there for 6 years I can totally agree with that. But the fact that nobody really cares about is that actually the locals litter a lot on the streets and the only reason it's so clean is thousands of underpaid sanitation workers who come from far away rural areas of China where there's no jobs at all and they literally work outside in all kinds of weather conditions for a couple of hundreds of dollars per month if they are lucky enough. This is what China is about very clean and modern on the outside, but if you go deeper it's not at all shiny and fancy.
当然即使今天中国也还是个发展中国家，十四亿人口不可能每个人都能光鲜亮丽，在中国至少能为底层人提供一个能自食其力的工作，清洁街道就是其中一项，中国农村土地不准买卖城里混不下去也能回家种地养活自己没啥问题，总比一些国家底层人无所事事无家可归强吧

There are no cleaners at night but you still see that the streets are spotless and clean. This is because the culture of not littering is part of their life.
What you need to know is that many sanitation workers are local elderly people who have retired. These elderly people cannot live idle at home and hope to have a job that is low-income and not hard, so that they can earn some extra money to supplement their family's daily expenses. My father is one of them. As children, we do not interfere with our parents’ choices.
