Some 20 odd years agoI was working with a new carpenter on the job who had recently returned to the island from Japan. He says “ Rocky, you gotta see this, I can whip through a 2x4 faster than it takes you to find your skill-saw!” He takes about 3 strokes with his new Gomby and snaps the blade in half! The look on his face was priceless! He bought me one on his next trip to Japan and it has earned a place in my pouch ever since. It is an amazing saw! Rick and have been best of friends ever since.

Most of my survival gear is old, thrifted, yard sales, used off e-Bay, cribbed together, etc. Couldn't replace most of it even if I wanted to. The Swedish GB small forest ax is prized and dear, but recent reviews suggest against spending that much money at this time on a brand new one. The Gomboy pocket is a great little saw. That one would be replaced. Recently upgraded to a Mora Garberg in a leather sheath. I would rather have a fancy survival knife with a wooden handle for more character (something like the knives David Canterberry reviews), but there is a LOT to be said for affordability, so the Mora G. would be replaced another just like it (and it IS growing on me).

As an elder hiker, my number one piece of gear is my trekking poles. I love my knives and the Firebox nano, but with my titanium knee and hip, I don’t go anywhere without my poles. Thanks for your great channel. I look forward to each new video post.

The firebox nano is probably the most versatile small stove made. I have the Silky and the Bacho saw, and am still not convinced that the Silky is worth the extra cost compared to the Bacho.

I lost one of those just last week.
It was my favorite headlamp band; an item that I ALWAYS carry.
Made by Liston Concepts circa 2000.
When I tried to buy a new one, I discovered that they are no longer sold. Not sure that Liston Concepts exists anymore. :(
Funny that a $10 item can be so debilitating when lost. Now I have to either learn to use a sewing machine or find a seamstress to make a new one.
Nothing currently available comes close to the light weight and tiny size of that headband.
It's just an elastic band with two loops to hold a Maglite Solitaire (zoomable single-AAA flashlight). One loop aims straight ahead, the other is angled downwards at roughly 45 degrees.
I carry two of the flashlights; one in the headband and the other in my hand, focused to spot trail markers in the distance. The second light weighs one a few grams more than a spare battery.
I use a rechargeable battery in the headlamp flashlight during the Winter (because I use it frequently) and a long-shelf-life lithium battery in the handheld so that it will always be ready.

I'm slightly over 5, but it's gonna be okay.
#1 Condor Tool & Knife 10" Blade Mini Duku Parang.
#2 Firebox 2qt stainless steel pot.
    #3 Streamlight 88083 ProTac 2L-X 500 lumens with USB rechargeable 18650 battery.
#4 Pathfinder Bottle and Nesting Cup Set.
#5 TOPS Knives B.O.B. Brothers of Bushcraft Knife.
(#6 Unknown ferro rod 0.5x5 inches.)
(#7 Petzl Actik Core headlamp 450 lumens.)
    (#8 MSR Reactor canister stove.)
(#9 TOAKS Titanium Long Handle Spoon with Polished Bowl.)
    (#10 Trangia alcohol stove.)
    (#11 Trangia Storm Cooker 27.)
    That's it. I swear. I don't think I have anymore.

There is nothing I can think if that I'd go out and replace as-is immediately given so many upgrades and innovations every couple of years... however, a couple I'd lament losing are the Jetboil Minimo (heavy, but oh so versatile and convenient) and a 2.5" Gerber folding knife (USA made and they just don't make it anymore - great steel, great grip, lightweight). Oh, and maybe an orange plastic coffee cup from GSI that I've had at least since 2000. Not worth anything; I just like it... a lot. Won't burn your lips, won't spill down your front, has a regular handle, and it is difficult to lose something that is Day-Glo orange.

As an Australian I don't go anywhere without bushman bug repellent or a decent fly net.
Also couldn't be comfortable without a decent knife or proper waterproof boots but if I had to have a number 1 item I would say a trusty old handreel fishing line, so many uses and so much fish to catch in Australia

Chopsticks -with variety of it, I choose wood and metal kind with good comfortable length cooking, flipping/picking up/stirring/mixing solid or liquid/eating foods. It eliminated variety of tools for cooking that makes back packing minimal.

My piece of gear I would repla e right away, is my hammock. After years of attempting to sleep on the ground, I have found legitimate comfort. Now I'm one of THOSE guys. Thanks Ernie, I hope you and your family are safe.

Thanks for sharing your top five. As an older day hiker (sometimes longer) mine are somewhat the same but I love my ALICE pack (somewhat modified). It can hold a ton of gear, compresses down when I’m not carrying a ton and is comfortable up to about 55 pounds (the ton). The other thing I’d replace is my 1978 Mohawk canoe. It’s not the lightest canoe but it’s been on many adventures with me and is at this point almost like one of the kids.

I recently purchased the Nano stove and absolutely love it.
One not on your list but is definitely on mine is the Swiss Army Farmer X - I purchased one that was a mod before Victorinox actually came out with this knife. A small tool with knife, saw, scissors, etc with alox scales makes it perfect for outdoor use.
Another one that is not well known is the Fraz Labs Tiny Nugget. I have considered a flashlight indispensable gear since I was a child. This light is not the smallest, lightest or brightest; but it is built durable and simple.

Well, only a couple of things in my main wilderness bag would be replaced right away.
My Snugpak Sleeper Extreme, and my Cammenga 3H tritium compass.
I’ve been lucky to be able to have bought two of many things that I rely on in the bush...hence the bag that stays in the Jeep that doubles (pun intended) as a GHB.

Weight has never been that critical for me...
    1. Oil-skin Haversack (I alternate between an LL Bean Continental Pack (from year with larger side pockets), and the Fjallraven Kaipack 28L) but my Haversack always goes along!
    2. Modified Ikea Wood Stove Kit w/ additional Trangia Alcholol stove (been eyeing up the Simple Theory Gear Wood Stove, though)
    3. Stanley Adventure Cook Set w/ additional French Press I found that will work with it, and GSI Cup (Simple, cheap, bomb-proof and fills my needs)
    4. Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe
    5. Condor Bushlore w/ Micarta handle

A.L.I.C.E. Pack was my only bag for more than ten years after I got out of the Corps. Someone stole it in 1993 and, for some reason, I have never replaced it.... imho, it’s the best all around backpack you can carry.

My Leatherman Super Tool, bought when I was an boy scout 31 years ago, and still use it on every trip. The next 4 things are my Fiskars axe and foldable saw, a Zippo lighter and my lined pants.

This is like a counseling session as I have the first three items :) Now looking at the rucksack. For me more of an EDC is a Leatherman with a Fenix E12 torch tucked in the pouch along with a mini sharpie. I have Leatherman which I still use that the 25yr warranty has run out on. I'm on the opposite end of the scale when it comes to OCD but cleaning my gear and maintaining gives me pleasure and as for expense, buy cheap buy twice. Thanks for thinking up new content in these odd times, stay safe.

Sawyer squeeze and Tarptent Rainshadow 2. I hike with 1 trekking pole, not 2. It’s one of the very few tents that can work with 1 pole, it’s well under 3 lbs., and in a pinch 3 people could sleep in it.

I totally agree with you on your choices brother as mine would be mostly the same , but I think if I had to pick the one most item it would have to be my Adventure Sworn mountaineer , that knife is all ways with me and the one time I had to send it in for spa treatment I was totally lost without it !!

Great vid, been thinking about a firebox for a few years. While watching this video, I stated to "her" about the pros of the fire boxes. I seen her eyes glaze over and give me a look saying,"are you really trying to talk to me about camp stoves, like I'd care". At least the lil one appreciates this stuff.

Titanium Firefox Nano would be the first. I am new to the game so I'm sorta starting from scratch pretty much. The trekking poles would run a close second as I have a titanium rod from my left hip to my knee. Did anyone ever tell you that the titanium rod can cause your leg to shorten by as much as close to an inch? Try walking with that!!! The moral of the story is don't fall and fracture your left hip. Ever. Yes, I am a Boomer.

I wish Firebox made a titanium X Box to match the Nano Gen 2 titanium stove. That would round out my present day Firebox Titanium with a Evernew titanium alcohol stove. Not sure what i would replace 1st if all my gear went missing. Logically it would be my Zpacks Nero Backpack then the War Bonnet Hammock and finally the titanium cooking gear. That would get me back out there.
    Hint ####
You can use a Evernew Titanium burner in the Firebox stove. I got one of the Trangia gel burning units ( Firebox's web site , $5.99 ) It's also a handy storage unit when not in use.
The bottom portion fits between the two bars ( where the trangia would go ) and the Evernew titanium burner sits in it like it was made for it. The reason I like titanium is it's light weight and it cools down in a hurry so packing it up is not a hot finger hassle.

What to replace? Hmmm. All of it. LOL. I would have to replace my Zero chair. Even though it is not essential there is nothing better than sitting by the fire in it and being able to lean back and at 1 pound i take it all over the place. Saws, Saws and more saws. LOL. I use The Gomboy, The Pocket boy and the F180 (on longer hikes). Good vid as usual...

I would immediately replace my cheap Morakniv and #8 Opinel ...I never go to the woods without them. As for saws, I love my cheap Corona ....danger sharp and eats through wood. Then there is the ferocerrium rod by nathan4071 on ebay. Simple and inexpensive but dear to my heart.

Love the Firebox Nano in SS. Looking a the 5 in in Ti but even the maker talks about burn in's and treating it gently at the beginning. I just don't get that. Seems to be all too much worrying about warpage. For the price it shouldn't be a consideration. Too delicate. Love the SS but would like the lighter Ti in 5in. Thoughts? thanks

Silky saw, so you don't find the 130 mm large tooth useful?
I mean with small twig burners, etc, it would seem idea?
Just only wanting to buy one catch all size because of cost.
The 130mm just seem so, well, less intrusive, the 210mm and up, well, you getting to be a portable walking tool chest, knife, hatchet, stove, fly rod, etc. :)
I take it a curve blade is better on limbs, tree trunks, etc?
My only experience with Japanese saws in with my flat blade, Japanese saw, rip teeth on top, cross cut on bottom, it's huge, the blade alone a little shorter then myizeforearm. It's teeth really aren't big enough for limb, tree work, its more of a furniture saw, etc.
The question is, if you could only carry one, which size?
