I absolutely adore Joni....and I'm primarily a rocker! This is one of my favorite songs period! What an amazing artist! Help Me can make a grown man cry!
Ah, Joni. She's so much more than just a singer; she's a fully-realized musician and composer who's at home in every musical genre, who recognizes no boundary between genres. It may be a surprising comparison, but Nina Simone was a similar musical spirit, a genius who was became famous for her distinctive voice, but whose compositional and improvisational skills were far above most other popular musicians'. I believe both these women will be recognized as geniuses in the decades and even centuries to come. (Oh, and great reaction Chod; thank you!)
I agree completely. Not only her versatility, but the fact that she wrote all those songs herself…She is in a category all her own. First album by her I bought was Ladies of the Canyon, when it came out in 1970. More than 50 years later, I can still say I will never get enough Joni Mitchell! Every track on Court and Spark deserves a listen (if you do that, you need to run the last two tracks together - one flows right into the other.) Blue and Hejira are also magnificent albums from end to end. Never anything but beauty and greatness from this woman.
I can’t think of a more versatile female singer than Joni. She is always creating, no rehashing of anything. She sculpts with her voice. If it isn’t artful it isn’t Joni.
Nice. If you're diving into Joni, check out 1975's _Hissing Of Summer Lawns._ Kate Bush & Prince's favorite Joni album, her best, & the album people sleep on: - Edith & The Kingpin - In France They Kiss on Main Street - Don't Interrupt The Sorrow - Hissing Of Summer Lawns
The lyrics to this song are almost a verbatim retelling of a conversation she had with David Geffen about the music industry and also about cruising for gay sex in Paris, "Thinking how I'll feel when I find, that very good friend of mine." She goes there. Joni goes everywhere.
Laura Nyro was a contemporary of Joni's & Joni was a huge fan of Laura's. I suggest you start off with her song Eli's Coming. Thanks!!! Really appreciate that you never pause your videos.
I've been discovering her music for the past month, it's been a real whirlwind and joy. I literally picked a cover that I really liked, that stuck out first: Chalk Mark in a Rainstorm. I love the lesser known stuff, still has the same genius singer-songwriter type stuff. Joni's ability to transcend genre is extraordinary rare on pop music. Only more recent bands like Radiohead come to mind. Such an incredible pioneer and inspiration for so many artists.
The band on this album is the fantastic Tom Scott & The LA Express! They have a lot of great fusion jazz under their own name as well. Joni is at her best with the jazz material, IMO and she was always able to play/collaborate with the best (stokin' the star maker machinery behind the popular song!)
Thanks Cindy. I thought nobody believed me when I wrote the same thing. She didn't mean anything by it and I only think he was upset because she picked him to be the focus of a song when there was so much more out there to write about. Laura Nyro made him a millionaire. He did sign an awful lot of good acts with Asylum.
I love how you get her! The depth of her lyrics...the beauty & sophistication of the music & her delivery....etc. (She will receive the Kennedy Center honors Dec 2021)
Great reaction, Joni has always been a favourite artist of mine she is my Number 1 Folk /Rock musician along with Sandy Denny (RIP), my No.1 Rock/ Heavy Rock/ Pop Stevie Nicks and for Prog/ Symphonic Rock the beautiful crystal clear voice of Annie Haslam.
A personal fave to listen to, and play as well. Unbelievably sophisticated, original and beautiful. An artist in a league of her own, regardless of gender. 8>D
Please react to Joni Mitchell singing The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines, live version from the Shadows and Lights tour-- It shows off her jazz vocal chops, and incredible range. Jaco Pastorius on bass, too!
Joni is a masterful lyricist and epic storyteller in every piece she's ever written. I've owned every album by her. She was a huge influence on my musical journey and I put her at #1 on my list of female artists.
You absolutely have to react to her performing the song "Woodstock" live in1970. Here is the link: th-cam.com/video/X180DHrKiJ0/w-d-xo.html. They way she introduces it is cool, too! You really, really, REALLY get to hear her vocal range in this song!
Joni's vocals on "Court and Spark" remind me of both of Phoebe Snow and of Roberta Flack, both of the early to mid 70's. The resemblance to Snow is striking. Flack was also a unique and amazing talent.
Joni is my #1 favorite female artist and about 20% of my music collection is female artists or female led bands. Another woman to check out is one that doesn't get a lot of recognition but is very talented both as a guitarist and a singer with a lot of range: Joan Armatrading. Her biggest single is 'Drop the Pilot' but 'Love and Affection' got some radio play as well. 'Me Myself I' and 'Rosie' are 2 more singles that did well in other countries. She's been around since the early '70s and is still going.
Agree with you about Joni’s supremacy ! Another one of her fine songs is “Harry’s House”. Not far behind her on my list is Bonnie Raitt , especially her Grammy- winning phase around 89’- 90’. A good song featuring her killer slide guitar work is “Slow Ride”. (Talk about versatility - she does folk/ blues/ funk/ reggae/ country & rock !)
I learned this song is about David Geffen. Joni wrote it after they were spending time together in Paris. Listening to the lyrics it is an accurate biography of David's career.
You MUST listen to her vocal performance on her song, Case of You - listen to the studio version from the album Blue. You will never hear a more developed palette of vocal beauty attained through a lifetime of exploration and discipline. The attention to detail on her phrasing is second-to-none. It's also one of her most popular tracks that has traction with younger audiences so it may direct some more traffic to your channel. I love your reactions.
Appreciate your intelligent reactions! And yes, the word artistic genius gets thrown around a lot but I think Joni is one and I would add Bowie to that short list.
I 'm not disagreeing with you, but do think you should take a listen to many of the artists suggested in the comments: Carol King, Carly Simon, Ricki Lee Jones, Patti Smith, Joan Armatrading, Nina Simone and others I'm not familiar with. And I know you have already reacted to Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt, but more of their music would be great. And also more Joni and I agree with the suggestion "Case Of You". There are two versions. There is also a live version on TH-cam where she is playing the mountain dulcimer. I was listening to the podcast "Hearts of the Dulcimer" and there is an episode about when Joni Mitchell bought her first mountain dulcimer. I hope people send you links for the artist they suggested. I think they are a must to listen to.
Free Man in Paris I sang many times at Kareoke, and it's about David Geffen, giant of his label today, but great friend with Joni in early 70's, and he picked her up and made her huge! It's about the music business and being gay and free when nobody knows you and wants anything business from you.
Your next Joni Mitchell song should be Carey! For another amazing blindside you could consider Carly Simon singing "That's The Way I Always Heard It Should Be". If you find the live version you will see George Harrison and Art Garfunkel whispering to each other backstage! Peace!
Thanks for your Joni focus. I agree with Kevin below, Hejira is my favorite album. Not the most musical or varied but so cohesive in story and tone. My favorite song is 'the title song from 'Don Juan's Reckless Daughter'. Love Joni.
Hey Chod My Man!! It's Michael the retired chef from Phoenix chiming in tonight!! So Joni!! She is AMAZING! Went to the comment section to see suggestions of other versatile female artists!! I think the closest one ( versatile that is) is Linda for sure!! She's Amazing too and can sing many different styles also!! But I wanted to suggest someone you haven't reacted to with an AMAZING VOICE from the 70s also!! ANNIE HASLAM!! THE LEAD SINGER OF THE GREAT PROG BAND- RENAISSANCE!!! PLEASE REACT TO THEIR CLASSIC- MOTHER RUSSIA!!! ALSO YOU MUST REACT TO HER COVER OF THE YES CLASSIC- TURN OF THE CENTURY WHICH SHE DOES WITH STEVE HOWE THE YES GUITARIST!! IMHO I REALLY THINK THIS VERSION SOUNDS BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL!! SHE COULD PROBABLY COVER MANY MORE YES SONGS GIVEN THE CHANCE!! OKAY BEFORE I GO TONIGHT- PLEASE DONT FORGET MY LIST OF GREAT SONGS FROM MY AWARD WINNING NEPHEW- BLUES. ARTIST- MIKE LEDBETTER!! I HOPE YOU STILL HAVE MY MANY LISTS IVE GIVEN YOU TO LISTEN TO!! LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED THEM AGAIN!!! DONT FORGET TO WATCH THEM WITH YOUR DAD!!! GO PHOENIX SUNS!! WE TIED UP THE SERIES AGAINST THE LAKERS TONIGHT!! WHOS YOUR FAVORITE TEAM?? TTYL YOUR #1 AZ FAN MICHAEL😊😊😊
She painted her album covers and considered herself a painter first, a musician second. Either way, an amazing artist! I wish more women would write their own music....
I don't disagree AT ALL. I don't remember all the songs by Joni you've listened to, but this particular sound of hers is distinctive to the COURT AND SPARK album. The next is somewhat similar, but she does get more experimental on that one, THE SILENT HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS. Then of course there's her album dedicated to jazz great CHARLES MINGUS called simply MINGUS which shines with her performances of avant-garde jazz vocals. So keep keeping on with Joni. 👍🎶
Joni is easily in my top 5 singer/songwriters along with Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and.......... Change that...make it Joni is easily in my top 3 singer/songwriters.
I absolutely love Joni, always have. But, if you want versatility, check out the Pointer Sisters' '70's stuff before they went pop/dance music in the'80's. From funk to ragtime to bebop to R&B to swing to country to boogie woogie, they did it all with style and class in four part harmonies. Well worth your time.
Joni is in a whole other level of artist above the rest. The other other artist I would consider her musical level peer would be Bob Dylan. Listen to more Joni. you'll get there. Wonderfully astute perspective, Ms. Smith. Not all TH-cam comments are as, um, nutritious. More like Gummy Bears.
Poet
She is one of a kind
Joni and her husband were in Paris with producer David Geffen and his wife having fun when he said these words she turned into a song. What a talent!
"For Free Joni Mitchell 1970". Joni and a piano. A perfect song IMHO
I have a minor quibble, Joni is one of the most important/versatile artists...not just female artists! And do check out her paintings, great work.
Another great song from the "Court and Spark" album
"The way I see it," he said "You just can't win it..." I've loved those first lines from the very first time I heard them.
I agree completely. Not only her versatility, but the fact that she wrote all those songs herself…She is in a category all her own. First album by her I bought was Ladies of the Canyon, when it came out in 1970. More than 50 years later, I can still say I will never get enough Joni Mitchell! Blue and Hejira are also magnificent albums from end to end. Never anything but beauty and greatness from this woman.
Did anyone bring you the work of a singer/songwriter that rivals Joni's catalogue and history?
Joni is a flat out genius.
Love this song!
Joni painted the cover art on her early albums as well.
I can’t think of a more versatile female singer than Joni. She is always creating, no rehashing of anything. She sculpts with her voice. If it isn’t artful it isn’t Joni.
Joni just brings a smile to my face and joy to my soul every time I listen to her voice!
You’re not wrong. Joni was a major influence on Prince, to name just one major artist.
there is a 70's video of Joni doing her song "California" live and she plays the dulcimer to accompany herself ..think you'd enjoy it!
Nice. If you're diving into Joni, check out 1975's _Hissing Of Summer Lawns._ Kate Bush & Prince's favorite Joni album, her best, & the album people sleep on:
- Edith & The Kingpin
- In France They Kiss on Main Street
- Don't Interrupt The Sorrow
- Hissing Of Summer Lawns
There's a great live version on TH-cam with Pat Metheny & Jaco Pastorius
That's from The Shadows and Lights tour-- the entire concert is incredible.
And Michael Brecker. And Lyle Mays. And Don Alias. Not too shabby a backing band! Amazing concert
Chod check out her "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" LP as she further expands into a jazz flavor....
Finding this J. Mitchell reaction video 47 years after I first heard the song has made my day. It has genuinely made my day.
Funny you should mention Led Zeppelin their song Going to California is inspired by Joni
Yes, Page & Plant were obsessed with her!
I love Joni and I love this song. Thanks for a great reaction to this one.
The lyrics to this song are almost a verbatim retelling of a conversation she had with David Geffen about the music industry and also about cruising for gay sex in Paris, "Thinking how I'll feel when I find, that very good friend of mine." She goes there. Joni goes everywhere.
Joni changed my life.... And you're something else, my man! So intuitive...
LOVE ME SOME JONI{SHE IS A GIANT}...PACKAGE HEADED YOUR WAY CHOD..... ...ALL MY BEST,KENT IN OHIO
Laura Nyro was a contemporary of Joni's & Joni was a huge fan of Laura's. I suggest you start off with her song Eli's Coming. Thanks!!! Really appreciate that you never pause your videos.
Had this on my compilation tape when I backpacked around the world in 1984. Played it as I walked down the Champs Elysses. Incredible. M
The entire album Hejira by Joni is a must. Try the song Amelia.
yes Amelia!
Joni is probably one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, and is really in a class by herself.
I 💕 Joni. It's hard to name a better songer/songwriter male or female.
I've been discovering her music for the past month, it's been a real whirlwind and joy. I literally picked a cover that I really liked, that stuck out first: Chalk Mark in a Rainstorm. Appreciate the reactions, Chod! More Joni: Jericho, For Free, and Woman of Heart and Mind.
Check out " Carly Simon - You're so Vain"

@@lisarainbow9703 'Tom Cat' wasn't it. Great band, great album. I saw Joni touring with them (plus the Band and CSNY) in 1974. Wonderful concert.
@@Macilmoyle I believe you're correct, "Tom Cat" was the album title.
That's fantastic that you got to see all of them live!
Jose Feliciano on guitar ... amazing
@@carriefoley685 The Crusaders are featured as well.
Written about David Geffen record company executive and promoted of many great acts.

Graham Nash sings harmony vocals on this song. He was the person written about in the song "River"....
This one's more straight ahead pop/rock, but she does jazz, folk, rock, experimental. Such a gift to us.
Who else could use the word "unfettered" in a song and make it sound good.
Please react to Joni Mitchell singing The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines, live version from the Shadows and Lights tour--
It shows off her jazz vocal chops, and incredible range.
Jaco Pastorius on bass, too!
Yes!
Great choice 👍
Total agree!

I used to sing this song a lot. I love it
This is a masterpiece of a song. by the best songwriter and vocalist of the rwentieth century!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️☮️🎼🎹🎸

Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire
Joni is my #1 favorite female artist and about 20% of my music collection is female artists or female led bands.

Bonnie YES (Joni too, but I love me some Bonnie R). Her cover of "Guilty" makes me swoon. She's got some soul.
Ah Joni, while I don't listen to her on a regular basis she is always a pleasant surprise.
You have to check out the live version from the Shadows and Light tour!
Joni is great and does have a wide vocal range. Someone else with an incredible range is Happy Rhodes. Check out her song Winter as an example.
Cold blue steel and sweet fire. Please, please, please.
That whole album is so good. 😎👍
I learned this song is about David Geffen. Joni wrote it after they were spending time together in Paris. Listening to the lyrics it is an accurate biography of David's career.

I always loved Hejira and in particular Black Crow.
Appreciate your intelligent reactions! And yes, the word artistic genius gets thrown around a lot but I think Joni is one and I would add Bowie to that short list.
the first 3 notes are iconic.
After her trip to Paris with a record producer, he told her , you know you haven't had a hit in a while, she wrote this, he didn't like it.
It was David Geffen
Even in the music business, the suits make big mistakes because their heads are too full of P&L statements
For your next Joni song, I recommend "A Case of You". And I agree, she is very versatile.
I 'm not disagreeing with you, but do think you should take a listen to many of the artists suggested in the comments: Carol King, Carly Simon, Ricki Lee Jones, Patti Smith, Joan Armatrading, Nina Simone and others I'm not familiar with.

Joni's album "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" was Prince's favorite album.
Other artists wrote music about her. CSNY- 'Our House' and Led Zeppelin - 'Going To California'.
Judy Collins is always a pleasure. “Both Sides Now” “Who Knows Where the Time Goes” “Chelsea Morning”
Free Man in Paris I sang many times at Kareoke, and it's about David Geffen, giant of his label today, but great friend with Joni in early 70's, and he picked her up and made her huge! It's about the music business and being gay and free when nobody knows you and wants anything business from you.

Have you checked out the clip where Joni is a guest artist on the Last Waltz?
This album in entirety is great
You still have not reacted to her live performance of Coyote from The Last Waltz. It is a must see!
A song written about record producer, David Geffen.
I wish you'd go back to her early days as a folk music singer and play her song "The Pirate of Penance." It's amazingly beautiful.
Joni is easily in my top 5 singer/songwriters along with Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and..........
Change that...make it Joni is easily in my top 3 singer/songwriters.
Looking for more female artists? Have you tried Mavis Staples (and the Staple Singers) late 1960s-70s. Good song to start: I'll Take You There
I'd also recommend them singing 'The Weight' along with the Band from the Last Waltz film.
Add my vote to both "the weight" and "I'll take you there"
Agreed
I absolutely love Joni, always have. But, if you want versatility, check out the Pointer Sisters' '70's stuff before they went pop/dance music in the'80's. From funk to ragtime to bebop to R&B to swing to country to boogie woogie, they did it all with style and class in four part harmonies. Well worth your time.
Is right ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Joni is in a whole other level of artist above the rest. The other other artist I would consider her musical level peer would be Bob Dylan. Listen to more Joni. you'll get there. I don't think you've listen to "Amelia" yet. Some other favorites of mine are "Harry's House/Centerpiece", "Song For Sharon", "Jungle Line", "Dreamland". so many others.

As a big fan of Joni, and also a fan of many forms of jazz, I think you would really enjoy Amelia - a song I am sure you will enjoy.
this song is about her manager at the time the great David Geffen
Linda Ronstadt is another artist that is very diverse. She can do it all
I love Joni's Hejira LP.
It looks from your playlist that you still need to cover PEOPLES PARTIES/SAME SITUATION, you will not regret it!!
I liked Joni from the early days, but was slow-out-of-the-gate to realise she is a musical genius.
