    I worked for my neighbor for all of my teen years and into my twenties. He had the 1150, the 1155 and the 2805. The 2805 was a BEAST! The 1150 was a MUD HOG!!!! It would go where the other two wouldn't. I enjoyed driving all three of them and I am not sure I could pick one that was my favorite. My neighbor would always tell me, "There is only one thing better than a Massey Ferguson. And that is two of them!" I have a 245 and a 4607 myself. I have a banner with that quote on it in my shop. Massey Ferguson's are all I know.

      Hugh Perkins the son of Frank Perkins migrated here in Oamaru Sth island New Zealand. Perkins was the Peterborough United kingdom England supplier to Massey Ferguson. Massey owned Perkins then sold to Caterpillar.
      Meeting Hugh was like meeting Henry Ford or Elon Musk.
      Agco the now Massey owner has Valtra of Finland and Fendt as same family. Massey had Italian Landini.

      Solidly built tractor range, but weren't the MF 2620s considered a bit underpowered for their weight at 95 hp ?
      Even the original MF 2640, at 104 hp was turned up to 110 hp in later versions.
      From what I'm told by ex MF Banner Lane staff, these tractors could be a bit unreliable, having been built in Beauvais, France.

      The basic gearbox was an 8 speed job but the fly in the ointment was the three range speedshift unit. The seals failed pretty regularly and a lot of farmers simply took out the speedshift and used the tractor as an eight speed. Less versatile but a lot more reliable.
      The speedshift unit was insufficiently tested and developed, hence all the troubles it caused.
      MF lost a considerable number of sales in the large tractor market due to the aforemented transmission faults, and Lee Elfes, MFs Head if Tractor Engineering was fired from the Company by Albert Thornborough, the head honcho of MF at that time. In my past experience I would say if there were leaks they would come from the fuel injection pump. Those rubber gromets on them with age will dry out and then the fuel starts leaking.I don't know how old the machine is you were talking about but all different makes and manufacturers over time will wear and need some replacement part stop stop leaks.

I seriously think it leaks more fuel than it burns! I've got a mystery leak at the fuel filter base (I think) I'm chasing down now. My uncle has an MF 185 that he calls the Nasty Massey. Great tractor...probably has a bazillion hrs on it, leaks diesel and oil from every orface on that engine, and keeps running day in and day out! Actually MF did produce the MF 2770 & MF 2800 tractors for a short time from late 1976, but due to issues with the engines and transmissions, they were recalled, remedial work carried out, rebadged as MF 2775/2805 respectively and reintroduced to market along with 3 other lower horsepower models, in 1978. Two of the new models utilised the Perkins 6-354•4 engine, with different power ratings, the third, the Perkins V8-540 engine.
      The two largest tractors (previously the MF 2770/2800 tractors) had new decals applied over the original model designation but could sometimes peel off to reveal the original model number underneath.

    The best part of these videos isnt even the equipment. Its seeing the farms and out buildings still in good shape and used. I had to laugh when they mentioned the fuel economy of the engine. Buddy of mine had a 1150 for a couple years and that thing was a complete pig and it was only a 503 V8. Had plenty of power if you could keep fuel hauled to it. Unless they did something different I have a hard time believing a 640 was any better. Could never figure out how Perkins could go from the 354, arguably one of the most fuel efficient diesels ever built, to those dang V8's that would dang near suck the fuel tank shut in a hard pull.

    • @jamesbarbour8400
      @jamesbarbour8400 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Perkins V8 engines were heavier on fuel for two main reasons, as with pretty much all V8s - firstly, 2 additional cylinders over a straight six will obviously use more fuel over the same amount of time in use, secondly, the Perkins V8 - 640 revved at between 2600 to 2800 erpm depending on application, versus the more usual 2200 erpm of the Perkins straight six, so again higher revs over the same time period is unfortunately going to use more fuel.
      Generally speaking, V8 engines of any make have to be revved hard to get adequate performance, as the design, regardless of make, is not conducive to producing a high torque figure. These engines were not designed specifically for agricultural applications but a multitude of other uses also.
      During the period in question, the horsepower race was still on and a bigger (or biggest) V8 monster engine would give a manufacturer bragging rights over the competition.
      Moving to more recent times in the 90s for example, at least some manufacturers opted for large capacity straight sixes that gave better fuel economy but also arguably a better torque figure, in their high horsepower machines.

    • @jamesbarbour8400
      @jamesbarbour8400 ปีที่แล้ว

      Main issue as far as I'm aware, was the transmissions, specifically the 24 speed ones. The 3 speed power shift ahead of the main 8 speed gearbox was a bit of a disaster, which is why a lot of customers converted the 'box' to provide only 8 speeds. I believe that the seals on the speedshift unit regularly failed, perhaps due to incorrect/sloppy installation procedures. When the seals failed, it was therefore a case whereby both a forward and reverse gear could be selected at the same time with the obvious disasterous consequences this gave rise to. Apparently later versions of the tractors had solved the issue with a new seal installation procedure but the damage to MFs' reputation had already been done by then. Not to mention the high inflation of the early 80s hitting agriculture, and by extrapolation, the tractor industry extremely hard. MF suffered big time as did other manufacturers, the most well known of which was IH which was bought by Tenneco late '84 and renamed Case/IH - the inevitable rationalisation of product lines then took place, of which the former IH 'Snoopy' tractors were but one casualty. Deere & Co. were about the only ag tractor Company to weather the financial storm of the period - others weren't so lucky and several mergers resulted, inevitably narrowing down the choice of machines for farmers.

    • @jamesbarbour8400
      @jamesbarbour8400 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ottoneidlinger4938 thank you, glad you appreciated my input. A real shame about these tractors as they certainly looked the part but that was all. Inadequate testing before release to market was what put paid to MFs reputation in this respect. If one reads 'Massey at the Brink' by Peter Cooke, it will be evident that poor and greedy so called 'Management' (more like parasites !) were to blame for lack of adequate funding to test these tractors properly. Management made sure they always recieved their Dividends rather than steering funds toward the very thing that was providing their income in the first place.
      As an aside, when the transmission failures began to get out of hand, the powers that be needed to be seen to be doing something - anything really, and the end result was the eventual firing of Lee Elfes, whom was head honcho of Tractor Engineering at that time. A very divisive figure by many accounts despite being married to Albert Thornboroughs' daughter. Also, Thornborough was another problem within the Organisation. As top dog, he had been so used to the good times of the 50s and 60s that when problems did eventually arise in the 70s, he simply ignored them - problems did not exist if he said so, such was his 'leadership' style. As promising as the larger tractors were, ultimately you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear (for which read lack of funding to carry out adequate testing before releasing product to market) and this situation came back to bite MF in the rear big time
