I'm a 10 hdcp, and I told my friend that I play with that this year's goal is to get better with my 3h and my 5w. I don't carry a 3w, as the distance difference between it and the 5w is minimal, and I gain more by having an extra wedge. I need to be able to hit greens or get close from 195 to 225yd away to make some stroke gains. Also with the 3w, I found exactly what you described ... not a hard enough hit to get the ball up in the air. That couple extra degrees on the 5w make it the better club. This video is 100% exactly confirming that it is a place to get better and how to maybe get there. Perfect! Thanks, Mark!
Love these type of vids. Best yet! I shoot in the 70s most of the time, but can always pick up something that I need to work on or be reminded of. Thanks & Keep em coming MC!
Similarly, but I went 5 and 6hybrids after 7 wood (was getting almost the same distance between 4h and 7wood which was about 195+yrds) 5hybrid gives me about 180yrds which fills the gap..longest iron is 7i
I’m totally into this… I have a 3W, 5W, 19 degree, and a 5 iron (weak lofted MP33). I love the combination because it gives me so many different types of shots I can try to use to hit those distances. It did take me a while to get used to not hitting the 3 and 4 iron, but honestly I don’t think I hit the range enough anymore to justify carrying them. Another banger of a video Mark!
Great advice 👍. Two seasons ago I ditched 3 and 4 iron, now have a 27 5 iron, 23 and 19 hybrid, 16 3 wood. Took a season but got them dialled in and overlapping, and I've found I can shape and punch the hybrids as effectively as I could back when I could hit 3 and 4 irons. Hybrids are the way, IMO 👍
Interesting comment about speeds - committing more like your driver shots resonated with me. Many years ago I loved my long irons, but today I struggle to hit them (just as you describe); so 4h, 5i, 6i off the deck are too variable and often end with similar results to a committed 7i (forget 3w - that's firmly a tee shot only for now !). I've also been working on calming down my swing (not trying to rush or kill the golf ball). You've got me thinking that maybe I need to try and ramp up the swing speed more as distances increase through irons and hybrids - rather than keeping that thought for my tee shots, which subconsciously I think I've been doing - gotta be worth a go 🤞👍
Best teacher on TH-cam bar none. Been watching you since Clifton and I credit you for helping me to get my handicap to mid singles (along with my own awesome talent!!!). All the best.
When I struggle hitting my longest irons, 4HY, 5 and 6 Iron, it's usually my tempo. If I get quick and too aggressive, I don't make solid contact. If I am hitting them well it's usually because my my transition from the top is smooth. I find that week in and week out it's a crap shoot.
1 thing I've never understood when purchasing irons, the shops only have the 7 iron to test. So alot of amateurs are getting sets based on how well they hit there 7 iron, and only find out they can't hit the longer irons afterwards.
I'm a 16 handicap so think this is aimed at me. You mention having 2 hybrids in your bag and then your 3W; is that any different than having one hybrid and 2 fairways (5W/3W) in the bag? My gapping at the top of the bag is fair (likely because I'm not consistent with longer clubs... I am a 16 HC), but I wonder if changing the clubs at he top end might make much difference.
Vast majority of hybrids are severely draw biased and I can’t play them as they all hook too much when solidly struck. Recently, I found out about the Mizuno CLK hybrids. These things are money. Straight to baby fade on every shot. It’s almost impossible to hook them. I have the 4h and 3h versions and for the first time in my life, I feel like I have a chance on the 180 to 195 yard approach.
Hitting down on the ball with long irons used to be an issue, since then i simply tell myself "trust the club" knowing the loft of the club will get the ball in the air. same advise i tell the new golfs i play with that try to "lift" chips around the green.
Any chance you’d start filming your podcast and putting them on TH-cam? I don’t really listen to podcasts but do watch recorded podcasts for some reason
I can still hit my 35-yr old Titleist 1-iron. Mark I’m 63 and can still carry 275 w/F9 bomah I’ve referred several buddies to your channel throughout usa 🇺🇸 You and Danny are the best. Well, Sir Nick is special to me. All the best! ✌️ out
6 iron running into your 22 degree hybrid running into the 18 degree hybrid - @MarkCrossfield would you mind sharing your lofts with your different clubs in your bag given you have good success with gapping? At least people who would swing the club at similar speeds to you would have a good reference point for gapping
What are the best grips to use for golf sensors like the Garmin CT10 or Arccos? I used the Arccos sensors but they kept falling off my Winn Dri-Tac and Golf Pride MCC grips. Not sure if others have had similar issues, and if so what grips seemed to work best?
over 2 years from 175 to 200, 99 shots, I'm 31%, using Shotscope watch. I don't like fairways 8 for 45, 17.8%, rough 7 for 21, 33%, tee 18 for 35 51%. This must tell some kind of story. My gut, is I tend to hit the ball fat and that shows up from the fairway and not the tee. No idea re: the rough being better than the fairway
Also, living in Scotland, I find hybrids are tough into the wind so I've not changed anything yet, I have a 3h then 3i which go fairly similar distances (210 to maybe 220 if I bust em....I'm not a long hitter! haha), 3h I can occasionally get out a bit further in the right conditions and its great out the rough but I'm considering ditching it for a 2i on some more links courses
We all need to adjust our expectations on not just these shots, but every shot. The stats from Arccos and Shot Scope eye opening. We ALL are way too hard on ourselves and expect too much. The Tour pro’s don’t expect what we amateurs expect. Cheers
Shooting in the 70's means you can be 7 over off regular tees. Suppose you can hit a 210 yard driver: how many times do you need to hit the green from outside 150 yards for that? Probably 0. Only three par 3's will be over 150 yard, and only four par 4's are over 360. Of course, if you are playing off the tips, you will need a much longer drive, otherwise this statistic doesn't work.
Hi Mark & Co, Thanks for great advise as always I have followed you since I took up golf in 2015, first via AGG. Hybrids are my friends and I believe I have watched all your youtube material. I believe it has made me a much better golfer and I love the game. 3/4 swing might help in this range if you club up and keep it on the line - look at e.g. Finau. Scoring in golf is about disipline, playing your strenghts and not making mistakes. More about trusting the clubs you have than changing them year to year. I play a similar setup as you Mark but with your old distances 😂 Shoot 78 yesterday, only Hogan irons in my bags 🏌🏼♂️

Congrats on 400k from Canada really enjoy your tips
100% agree! I use 12 degree driver, 5 wood, 7 wood, 4&5 hybrids then 6 iron to SW. Loft is my friend

When I finally practiced enough to get a 200yd club, changed everything. 5 iron is my long iron , i just went to 4 hybrid for my 215yd club

Would you see hybrids sitting alongside say a 5 and 7 wood?
I have a 5 hybrid below my 7 wood...
Yes, I carry 7 wood, then goes to 4 hybrid and then irons from there. 7W is equivalent to a 3.
Where did you source your Asics golf shoes?
A quick Google finds loads of places
@@Mihigo26 Thanks Michael, specifically, I'm looking to source some from Amazon UK or in the EU market generally. I can see loads available in the US
3wood ,7 wood, 4,5,6,7 hybrid ... 4handicap, use what works....
For higher handicaps what’s the best way to set their bag up?
Already converted to your gospel re hybrids!

6 iron to a 22 degree hybrid 👍

GIR over 200 yds prob about 0%.
“Let’s break 80” bud I’m still looking for that sub 100 but I’m here haha
Haha glad to have you.
I have been playing golf since 1967 and yet to break 90. Lessons never helped either.
I like my 4 iron want a 3 now
Love the podcasts btw. Always listen to it during my cardio :)
If I have approach shots that are 175-200 yards, then I must be playing the wrong tees!!!
It’s three wood NOT “free” wood ! 🤣👍

We shouldn't feel bad, Trevino said God couldn't either.
He pures his driver though
Quit using your hands tapping rhe club and swatting flies. Position the club.too much talking.
