I was pulling for the Weiand just because I like old stuff. That's a serious gain in every meaningful part of the curve... gotta give the credit.
Thanks man deep down I was too.. Especially since we had about 80hrs of grinding in it! Lol

Cool test! I want to see how much power you pick up when you ditch the mechanical cooling fan for a pair of electric fans
My bet is 15rwhp.. but we will find out this weekend!
It will definitely be interesting to see the actual dyno numbers to see if there’s more than a 5-10 hp gain
Not much..often less than 5hp since the alternator has to provide more power under load. The advantage of electric is you can turn them off so no load at those times and they weigh less. A clutch fan can have two failure modes: the clutch will fail, or the fan will physically break. The electric fan introduces many more failure points: fuse, all wiring connections, physical failure of the fan, failure of the motor, failure of the thermostat.
I just found this channel today, and it is quickly becoming my favorite. Awesome vids!

The new Holley intake might make more power but the old school Weiland looks a lot cooler.
Kevin I agree, the new intake while it delivers the goods... It doesn't match the look of the old school intake... On my next Engine build I'm going to Try and use a Boss 302 Hi-Ram... Those Cleveland sized runners should flow enough to support the power im shooting for!
Can u show how u hooked your linkage to the carbs I like the setup
J Whiting, I'm using the Weiand sideways carb linkage kit with a rod that I made to connect it to my throttle pedal rod... pretty simple. It would be easy to do a cable setup as well... When I drop Project MIXED UP BOSS in CASPER you will get to see the setup!

What would you do to it?? I'm always looking for ideas
Just went to Holleys site and they now make a 351W hi ram base!
Yup!! The only problem is the size of the runners... They are sized for a 800hp 427 or larger engine!

I like the smooth contours of the older hi-rise. But, the beauty of the newer ram is you can better LAMBDA tune with the runners directly under the carb venturies. I think the results are going to be close with the newer one coming out a head because the runners are placed better.
You are dead on with that Steve.. the runners of the old manifold were WAY to small as well... We had 80hrs of grinding in the old manifold trying to get enough flow to support 600hp. I can also tell that having the runners separated helps from "in between cylinder robbing" in holes 6 and 5. We are building Casper's next Engine.. I'm going to need every bit of Airflow that manifold can give!!! Thanks for watching! Please Subscribe and follow Casper's progress... And please help spread the word about the channel!!!
Andy
That's very impressive for it to out do your intake with that many hours of port work
The early weiand was never meant to support the kind of power that we were going to make.. it had VERY small cross sectional runners and didn't flow well.. we bolted it to the head which flowed 315cfm and it dropped to 240cfm! Even after porting we could only get a little over 275cfm from it.. Thanks Hippie for Watching
Andy
Seriously badass. They have an old Weiand dual carb intake for my 6cyl if like to find someday. Already have carbs for when I do lol
Did the grinding done to the old manifold hurt the performance? I didnt see a dyno number for the Weiand before any mods were done to it unless I missed it?
No... We didnt Dyno it in stock form but we did put it on the flowbench.. bolted to my heads which flowed 315cfm it dropped to 240cfm even after porting it flowed only around 275cfm.. you must remember that manifold was made in a time of no aftermarket heads... So it worked well on stock and ported stock heads...
Engine torque is lb-ft, bolt torque is ft-lbs.
Pick up a tuning kit for the carbs and change the secondary springs to eliminate the stumble. A well tuned vacuum secondary will work beautifully.
The thing is... The way the engine is loaded on the Dyno is completely different as how it is loaded on Road/Track... Thanks for Watching and posting.. please Subscribe and help me spread the word about the channel!
Good Catch Leland, sometimes in making these vids.. I will slip up and Ft-lbs will come out of my mouth... LOL
Another great video! I got to ask, because I am deep in a internet shopping rabbit hole - what is a good dual carb manifold for a 1970s ford 302? Preferably as direct fit as possible…see pre-made dual carb kits, but is that the way to go?
If it isn’t any trouble could make a recommendation? Thanks man, I work graveyard and have been going through your videos in order
It depends on what your plans are for it... And it depends on the rest of the vehicle.. what heads cam and compression?

I'm a Big FORD Guy, Mainly into the Cleveland's and 429-460 Engines. But messed around with some 302, 351 Windsors, i know about the different deck heights, were you using those adapters because of the 8.2 Deck Height with intake for a Bigger deck height ? I know a Little more about the Cleveland's and 460,s Currently got a 521 Stroked BBF in my 86 Mustang, built it up bout 10 Years Ago N/A through a 1000 cfm 4150, Mild Solid Roller, Out of the Box Trickflow Street/Strip Heads, Going Low to Mid Nines on 275/60 Drag Radials. Just curious as to why you were using the adapter ? Doesn't the small Ford's come either 8.2 or 8.5 Deck Heights ? And the 351 Windsor 9.2 or 9.5 ? Were those Tunnel Rams for a 351 Windsor ? Just curious.
Bad Ass 6.0 Powerstroke : The Joe Davis Mod was needed because this was a ported by David Vizard intake from a 302 with 80 hrs of die grinding and some flow bench work. Now there are 351W intakes that dont need the Price 8.206 to 9.469 or 9.500 inch adaptors. As you know, we all talk about Modular engines with the 4.6/5.0/5.2/5.4 V8 and 6.8 V10 Windsor and Romeo and Taskid "cammers", but Ford used modular concepts in all its old variable deck in line small sixes and the SBF Windsors and 335s and 385 Limas. The 221 to 302; 8.206. 302C, 351C, 9.206. 351M/400 13.206. 370/429/460 13.306 if I recall. The little 200 six, 7.803. The 250 9.469. Essex 90 degree V6, 9.469. The Windsor, Cleveland, Lima, Essex plants just flitched up the intakes and then made XE prototype castings. To use the existing hours of effort put into 100% cutting edge flow bench work from people who worked with Andy, adaptors were the best option. The TIG welded section solved a very specific problem. It was brave but sensible to to it that way. 351 W Holley's werearound when the concept was started, but the advice was to use the smaller runners of the 302 High Ram for a 600 hp net engine.Bet its more thsn that now though. Re-read Andys specific details on thr heads and DV cam specs...all Andy's responses are better than anything I can say. I have seen spacers used often down here in New Zealand and Australia because we use better 289/302 and 302C/351C stuff on 351 Windsors often. The work done on little 302s and Cleveland heads can then be transfered to the more reliable 351W block with the cost of Prices spacers a negligable factor in the Grand Scheme. That 14 rear wheel hp from the gas flowed 302 spec narrow intake will be a lot more than 14 hp and ft lbs at the flywheel. Very special to make such a huge increase!
Does price motorsport still do the adapter kits? Trying to call them but not answering, Cheers

The adapters you spoke of that raise the intake up are for what?
So you can run a 289/302 8.2 deck manifold on a 351w! Back when I first built the engine.. Holley didn't offer a 351w Hi-Ram yet.. so I wanted a Tunnel Ram to look period correct... I had Bill at Pricemotorsports make the adapters so I could make it all work... I did pick up a 351w Hi-Ram intake but after some work on the flowbench.. we found out that with runner size it would work better with at least 427" and making 750+hp.. So i didn't want to fill the runners with epoxy so it is patiently waiting on Casper's next engine!!! Which is around the corner... Just wonder what kind of hp you think the high ram will support for a Windsor? My current setup is a 626hp 393 also. It’s a super victor with a dominator flange. The Hi-Ram based for the 8.2 decks have a smaller cross section and longer runners than the 9.5 deck version.. the 8.2 deck seems to be happy around the 600hp range.. the 9.5 version is a much more serious piece. I can't find the old syle Weiand new anymore & I have looked like crazy. Wanna sell yours
I have a question for any mopar guys on here my brother had a 1969 roadrunner that had dual quad edelbrock hirise tunnel ram with 2 1200 cfm double pumpers with dual feeds on each after the car was broken in it was sent back to detroit for balancing and blue printing and as he put it "souped up" this is going back to 1974 when my brother bought it he ran racing fuel from where he worked I am 66 now so my memory may be off somewhat but it was said it had 1200 HP at the crank he could pull a wheelie at least 2 feet off the ground running 13 inch wide tires ususlly slicks is that HP possible?
I could be totally wrong about this, but I was always under the impression that these tall, tunnel ram style intakes were better suited to higher RPM drag racing applications, and not ideal for lower RPM street use, and even less suitable for heavier street vehicles like trucks, which rely even more on low RPM power. Is that not the case?
That is an old misconception... I believe it comes from folks back in the ProStreet days where people would put them on pretty much stock engines and lack of tuning..
From all of my testing I have ran them on everything from 302's to Big Blocks and when tuned right they deliver a very broad power curve..( that is as long as the runners are long and not like some of the short runner sheet metal versions you might see out there) they are really in the middle between a dual plane and single plane on low end torque production but around 4500-5000 the topend power surpasses the single plane intakes... My 393w had excellent drivability even off of idle! Once you drive a tunnel ram vehicle with properly tuned carbs... It will blow your mind!
Andy
@@UnityMotorSportsGarage
Well that's good news, because they obviously look cool too! If tunnel rams do make good power all around, then they'll be helpful to Chevy owners, who are always trying (in vain)to find new ways to make their engines even remotely competitive with blue oval engines. Obviously it's an impossible situation. So I kinda feel for them..... 😁
@@UnityMotorSportsGarage
I think I might have been confusing things. I used to hear people say that the dual plane intakes were better for street use, and the single plane intakes were better for higher rpm strip use. The confusion arises because the typical 80s & 90s era dual plane intakes were lower/shorter, and more "tame" and stock looking. Whereas the single plane Victor style intake manifold look significantly taller, and are more aesthetically similar to a tunnel ram. So when I saw a tunnel ram, I equated its advantages and disadvantages to what I used to read about single plane Victor style intake manifolds.
@@HighlanderNorth1 when comparing intakes... Dual planes have 4 long and 4 short runners.. this gives a broad powerband, single planes have 8 short runners, which tunes to a higher rpm while the tunnel ram has 8 long equal length runners with a straight shot down the Intake port.. this will give a huge bump in midrange torque and out power the single plane up top.. the biggest thing is Carb tuning! But once you get that dialed in... It's a win win situation! I say if you have hood clearance don't be afraid of the Ram...
Andy
They work from 1700 to 7000 rpm. Id go efi for better results, and you'll have more clearance. Tune and forget, better start up. Go computer.
What are the Price Motorsports adapter plates for?
Good question... Back in 70's into the mid to late 80's there wasn't many performance options as intakes go for the 351w. Back then if you built a 351 it was a Cleveland! So with many options being available to fit the 289/302 companies begin to offer adapter plates so you could bolt a 302 intake onto the 9.5 Windsor engine! Once the 90's arrived the Clevelands died off and the Windsor then became the "one to build" so companies started making Intakes for the Windsor..EXCEPT Tunnel Ram intakes..There was one produced for a short time but it was discontinued way back... So if you wanted a tunnel ram on a Windsor your choices were... Have a custom sheet metal one made or Adapt one for the 302 to your engine... So when I built this engine I wanted a tunnel ram.. and I went the adapter route! Two weeks after I had bought them.. Holley released the Hi-Ram for the Windsor.. David Vizard and I picked one up but found the runners to be too large for this combo... So I stuck to the original plan until Holley brought one out to fit the 302! The runners were perfect for 600hp!
Hope this helps answer your question

I noticed with the Weiand Ram that the secondaries were independent of each other.....on the Holley you switched the tops and connected the vacuum that the carbs were seeing with a vacuum tube. Why not have equal springs on the secondaries and the vacuum connection on both the Weiand and the Holley? You speak of ruling out variables and, right there, you introduced a variable that should have been eliminated. Perhaps your dyno results will hold up but equal means equal on the set up and it appears to me that you did not do that.
It had the vacuum balance hose on both before with the weiand and the Holley intakes... They both use the same spring in the carbs but they can have slightly different opening rates and that is why vacuum hose is needed.. they both open at the same time. Thanks for Watching

I was wondering if you're running a 16 volt battery
Nah I'm still 12v...
I'm trying to keep it somewhat old School...
I want those valve covers!!!!!!!!!!
I have some big news coming so you might get lucky!!! Please Subscribe and help spread the word!!
Nice engine but I am suprized by your not running power brakes.
Nah this is totally old school! Plus with my camshaft I only have around 10" of vacuum so, I would have to run a vacuum canister and or pump! I hope you like what you see please subscribe and help spread the word about the channel! Thanks

That is a manifold manufacturer problem as it wouldn't have worked even without the valley plate as you described.
Well... To run a 302 intake 8.2 deck engine on a 351w which has a 9.5 deck block... You must run a valley plate because the manifold is raised up almost 1.5" to where the 8.2 manifold meets the adapter plates .. when I first built this engine there wasn't a Tunnel Ram available for the 351w and two weeks after I bought the adapter I see Holley debut the 351 Hi-Ram at SEMA!!! I love tunnel ram manifolds, they fall right in between a good dual plane and have more topend power of the best single plane!
@@UnityMotorSportsGarage ok, I'll take your word for it. I don't know exactly what your distributor spacer and shaft setup is so it's just intriguing. Your mod looks fine though.
@@UnityMotorSportsGarage oh I see
14hp is negligible if both setups aren't tuned properly.
I’d say the Holley will make better numbers cause I could hear it it even sounded better maybe I’m wrong
Cool test but look at the OLD RAM, It was how old and still was close so that says alot
You must know we had over 80hrs of grinding in the old manifold to get the flow up! In stock form on the flow bench it would only flow 240cfm!!! Even after the grinding..we only were able to get 275 CFM from it... You must also remember it was designed for 289 heads!

I have a test I want to do on my car if you wanna come help with the install lol.
What kind of test you wanting to run?
@@UnityMotorSportsGarage Edelbrock x-f8 with Holley super snipers and twin turbo vs a single blow through carb weiand stealth also with twin turbo. I own the stealth and the carb but I haven't got the funds yet for the x-f8 and snipers.
@@UnityMotorSportsGarage it's on a 347 stroker with aftermarket dart block forged internals AFR heads. It's all in a 63 ford falcon.
@@tobiasross6171 ummm yeah
.. I LOVE that... It's going to be a BEAST!!!
@@UnityMotorSportsGarage I haven't seen anyone do the 2x4 Holley injection on a cross ram let alone twin turbo on one.
The gain from the Holley was well worth the swap in my opinion. 14 foot pounds of torque is something to take note of...
A pair of OEM based carbs, then mounted sideways. What could go wrong!!
Though a decent single plane and a 750HP would probably make more and be a whole lot simpler.
A good tunnel ram from my years of experience is worth right about 25-35hp over single plane manifolds... I have this combo delivering better Drivability than most peoples dual plane setups! And is getting right at 16mpg!

you think he could’ve at least finished out the video with a nice big smoky burnout geez☹️
Even more power with efi. Tunnel rams with carbs are always carrying a flat spot due to the distance between the carb and the combustion chamber. Most guys over fuel at idle to compensate which makes them soot up with the extra fuel at idle/part throttle. They do look awesome.
you now they made one ford the 351w now.
Yes I have both bases but for the power I'm making the runner CSA was better with the 8.2 version.. the 9.5 version really needs 400+ ci making about 150hp more than this combo to really shine
WOW, WOW, WOW. A whopping 14hp. You might feel that, in a go-cart.
You've never raced competitively have you.
I watch this on my phone i wish your voice was louder
Steve this was an older video of mine, I upgraded my camera to help this a good while back... Thank you for watching!

You need some better carbs.
I have a set of tricked out 660 Center Squirters that I'm testing against the Holley 1850's
Do you realize how lucky you are to have David Vizard for a FRIEND? To share shop space with him?? You couldn't possibly have found a better teacher or mentor. Smokey Yunick, Dick Landy, and Bill Jenkins died long ago, and they were more cantankerous! And not TOO many guys can boast having a set of Vizard-ported heads on their truck! Did ya ever get around to comparing those vac-sec carbs vs double pumpers?
I never did the DP comparison but I do a 1850 vs 4224 shootout at the dragstrip!
@@UnityMotorSportsGarage What's the 4224? Center squirter?
@@jeffrykopis5468 yes they are the 660 center squirters..
