Great Advice! I am Homeschooling my 5 year old! He is in Kindergarten so I do math, writing, and reading with him. On Mondays, I teach his Classical Conversations class at Church. I have to say that my 5 year old does great. We work for about two hours doing his work plus we sing songs like ABC songs, number songs, and he has a favorite months of the year and days of the week song. All I have to say is its time to start homeschool and he comes right over to where I am. I hope he stays like that and continues wanting to learn.
So happy to have found your page! Grew up homeschooling and now planning family and considering our future. I have had strong mixed feelings about homeschooling but so many of your videos have helped me feel much more confident in my decision to. I look forward to seeing more.
I really love Tip Tuesday! We have similar rules in our homeschool, along with consequences for when they don't follow (usually taking away free time activities one by one). I also find it helps keep them on track if I am just as focused on school as they are, whether I'm working with them or studying something for myself.
That's what my kids are doing!...as soon as I turn my back they start just not finishing their work as they should and me?.... Overwhelmed !Great advice! I'm following... Thank you Erica!
How do u get the kids to consistently clean up their area every time? I have two a 5&6 and they will play and be messy every day and never clean up.. should I spank them for discipline to clean? Right now I currently clean behind them
I ask them to :) They have to help me clean up our school room at the end of each day before they can go play. If they choose not to clean, the consequence is they don't get play time. Also if you are consistent with cleaning up the school area after each day then it just becomes habit and part of their routine. It might just take some time :) Just explain to them that you're all going to help clean up together and give each one a task they can manage.
+Stefanie Weber Set up consequences for their actions. I have two teens and a 2nd grader (aka: man of drama). I found the best thing I could do was make sure they had separate work areas away from each other. So, my oldest works in his room, my middle kid works in the homeschool room (as does my youngest, but closer to where my office is). My middle son has to have all his work checked at the end of the day for completion, not correction, but completion because he has a tendency to say he's done when he really isn't. When he gets caught it's an elimination of something he wanted to do that day (video games, going to a friend's house, etc) along with spending the rest of the evening finishing what he should have done to begin with. For the younger kid the same is true, but because he breaks out into fits he has to sit in my office or forfeit something he wanted to do that day. This mamma doesn't do drama. The key is to be diligent and remember that you are the mom.
+Stefanie Weber We have consequences for them. It kind of depends on what the issue is. Like I said if someone is working diligently but having a hard time with something, I'll usually have them just set it aside and we'll sit down after school and work through it together so we can make sure they understand the work. If someone is just procrastinating (that will be a video for next week) then they have consequences. That might mean they put their work aside as homework while everyone else is out playing and having fun. If their bugging their siblings or not cleaning up after themselves then they might be grounded after school and not get to go to their sport, or go play with neighbors etc. If their being disrespectful to me, then we usually end up having a conversation with them about that and there's some type of consequence as well. It really depends on their age and what the issue is. We usually talk out any issues with Daddy when he gets home so we can all be on the same page, and they know what is expected of them during school hours. :)
