You just confirmed that God has chosen his people and we are predestined as scripture says. We certainly don't know who the elect are, but God does and uses us to spread the word to all for his purpose. Jesus said all the father gives to me will come to me, not "everyone will come to me." The atonement issue is clear to me, who ultimately receives atonement for their sins? Everyone, or only born again believers? A non believer's sins are not forgiven/atoned for in the end.
I love Pastor John but his logic in his defense of limited atonement doesn’t make sense. First he seems to say the atonement is effectual and Jesus bought everything so that the elect are saved because of it. Then when he comes to the passages that do say Jesus died for the sins of the whole world he switches to say something Scriptures don’t say-that he died for the sins of the whole world but not the same way for everyone. He employs an illogical maneuver to avoid the logical consequences of the way he defined atonement when it comes to those passages and evangelicalism.
Pastor John's explanation is excellent. Have always held that view. The Bible says explicitly that Jesus died for the sins of the world. That said, God from the beginning of time, had also predestined the elect to receive the offered salvation. And there's no contradiction here as many are quick to see one. While everyone potentially can be saved, not everyone will be saved. While God knows everyone and desires all people to know Him, not everyone is predestined for adoption/election. If everyone was the elect, then nobody would be. All how glorious is the knowledge of God!
Jesus says: “My sheep listen to my voice, I know them and they follow me.” John 10:27 Are you one of Jesus’ sheep? Let’s find out and ask Jesus (excuse the caps for emphasis). Whom did you die for, Jesus? Jesus says: “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me- just as the Father knows me and I know the Father-and I lay down my life for THE SHEEP....I call my own sheep by name and lead them out.” John 10:14-15, 3 To the goats Jesus says: “You do not believe because you are NOT my sheep....My Father HAS GIVEN THE SHEEP to me.” John 10:27, 29 Jesus says: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends IF you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I CHOSE YOU.” John 15:13-16 Jesus did not choose the goats as his friends. Jesus says: “The Son of Man came....to give his life as a RANSOM for MANY (not all).” Matthew 20:28 If Jesus ransomed the goats, they would all be saved. “ I pray for them. I am NOT praying for the world (goats), but for those you have GIVEN ME, for they are yours. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine.” John 17:9-10 Jesus says he died for the sheep and at the same time told the unbelieving goats they were not his sheep so he did not die for them and Jesus specifically said he is not praying for the goats. Jesus chose his friends and died for them, not people who were not his friends and who hated him. If Jesus died for the unbelieving goats, then their sin of unbelief would be paid for and they would be saved. Jesus says: “I came down from heaven to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me: That I shall lose none of all he HAS GIVEN ME (the sheep) but raise them up at the last day.” John 6:38-39 In John 10:28-30 Jesus said the sheep were all the Father had given him and he and the Father are one (in essence and purpose and will). To have Jesus die for all the sins of people who the Father did not choose is to split the Trinity and make Jesus working against the Father’s will. Jesus did not die for Pharaoh and other people already in hell nor the goats whom he knew were freely choosing to go to hell and not the elect of the Father. Why would Jesus die for the goats already in hell? We all freely choose to go to hell but God chooses to regenerate and save some and die for them. That is pure mercy and grace. When God makes some people spiritually alive, who are dead in sin and resisting God, Jesus becomes irresistible to them. If Jesus is irresistible to you, then you are one of the Sheep Jesus died for. Jesus did not die for the goats who hate Jesus by their own free will. Jesus says: “My sheep listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me.” John 10:27 “I lay down my life for the sheep!” John 10:15 Do you know why you do not believe Jesus laid down his life for the sheep? “You do not believe because you are not my sheep.” John 10:26 Instead of worrying if Jesus died for the goats going to hell, people better receive this teaching by Jesus himself because Jesus says: “There is a judge for the one who rejects me and DOES NOT RECEIVE MY WORDS; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day!” John 12:48
John Piper is asking a really strange question. I feel the question should be... Isn’t unlimited atonement more biblical than limited atonement ? The answer is yes. You can’t fit scripture to your own pleasing or to human logic. The Bible clearly states in 1 John 2:2 - “He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.”
@@jaredlangdo2028 “he is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.” Seems like the application is for our sins , and the sins of the whole world. Where in that specific Bible verse do you see it only applied to one group?
The Calvinist must provide scripture that states Jesus died “Only” for the sins of the elect, due to the numerous scriptures that all men were bought by the blood of Christ [1John 2:1-2, Isaiah 53:6, Mark 10:45, John 1:29, John 3:14-16, Romans 5:18-19, 1Cor 15:3-11, 2Cor 5:14-21, 1Tim 2:4-6, 1Tim 4:10, Titus 2:11-14, Hebrews 2:9, Hebrews 9:28, 2Peter 2:1, 3:9]
Many use Matthew 1:21 to prove their case on limited atonement, however this verse demolishes "Limited Atonement" rather than support it! Matthew 1:21, can easily be used to refute "Limited Atonement" simply because "his people" here refers to Israel and not the elect! And many are making the unforgivable mistake by interpreting "his people" to be the elect, because it was still in the Old Testament period when the angel proclaimed the gospel! And if "his people" refers to Israel then Jesus died for the elect and non-elect (Romans 9:6-11)! Any young Christian (young as in the faith) who know the simple truth that Israel is God's people in the Old Testament and when the Old Testament ended and when the New Testament begin then the doctrine of atonement will be very clear to him or her. Read also the parallel account in Luke 1:68-80, no one will have doubt that 'his people' is referring to Israel, God's people in the Old Testament. Limited Atonement is demolished, trust only God's Word!
If 'his people' is referring to Israel only as you stated then the angel is affirming salvation for Israel only which we know is not true from scripture. The premise of your argument that the gospels being in the old testament period mean that only references to the old covenant are given is simply fallacious. There are many example in the old testament period that look forward and speak of the new covenant.
No! His people are made up of "Jew and Gentile"....because John made it CLEAR in Revelation 5:9 "for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us (the sheep) to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;" You didn't demolish limited atonement, you just crapped on it because you don't like that Christ laid down his life for a people for himself made up of Jew and Gentile, those that were given to him by the father.
@@brianc81 You method is called "Synthesize" taking various verses together to form a theology without considering the context! If universal atonement is true, then Hell will be EMPTY! There is not one person in Hell that Christ died for!
@@brianc81 Well, I have tried to be nice to you who do not know the scripture at all. If you can answer this very simple question then you have a place to comment, otherwise, my advice to you is study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Tim 2:15): Israel is God's people in the old testament, and so there is two distinct groups of people, Israel and the Church who are called God's people. So what is your reason for your insistence that "his people" here must be the church which are made up of Jews and Gentiles? Show your reason and not by your assertion and bold claim, but by analysis from the scripture (i.e. study). Many took for granted that because the verse is in book of Matthew, in New Testament section of the Bible, and so "his people" must refer to the Church! That's foolishness! Bear in mind, the Lord Jesus in His ministry told the disciples to go to the lost sheep of Israel, they were not allowed to preach the gospel to the Gentiles (Matthew 10:5-6, 15:24) until after His resurrection when the great commission was given. For the discerning Christians, they would understood why the Church at its infancy who were only Jews, contented with apostle Peter for baptising the Gentile believers (Acts 11:1-2). They finally came to a conclusion that God had also granted repentance unto life for the Gentiles (Acts 11:18). From then on, was the Church filled with Gentiles and Jews. In case any truth seeker would missed the point, the scripture further stated that the Jewish believers who were scattered abroad during the persecution of the Church preached only to the Jews (Acts 11:19). This proves that the Church were initially made up of Jews only. So why this is case? Because when the angel proclaimed the gospel, it was still in the Old Testament! That is the proves that "his people" in Matthew 1:21 is referring to the nation Israel, God's people in the Old Testament! God certainly know how to take the wise in their own craftiness (1 Corinthians 3:19), those who are wise in this world! Be wise in the Lord and search the scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life! (John 5:39) (This effort is help for the Bereans who would honor the Lord in searching the scripture to know the truth, certainly not for strife or vainglory (Philippians 2:3).
In the beginning was the Word and the Word was God. He created EVERYTHING, but for some reason His sacrifice is not big enough to invite the whole world that He created! To think that these doctrines are believed more and more today breaks my heart!

I see it as a really long train on its way to heaven. Christ bought everyone a ticket, every seat is paid for in full. It's up to us to get on the train. If we choose not to get on the train, that doesn't mean our seat wasn't paid for. It'll just arrive in Heaven with a lot of empty seats
Romans 9 is not about those who are chosen or not. It is about believers who are living in sin. It is about the power of God to save sinners. He can save one to honor and another to dishonor. They are both saved to show the power of God. First Corinthians 5:5 Turn such a one over to Satan to kill the flesh, so that his Spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord. This born again believer was sleeping with his fathers wife. He was about to lose his life, and the rewards he could have had in heaven for eternity, but he himself was still saved. He was vessel to dishonor. He was sealed by the Holy Spirit unto the day of redemption, Ephesians 4:30 but was living like the world. We can not tell whether another person has believed or not, but how they are living. In a great house their are clean vesels set aside for the masters use. There are also vesels that are not used but still belong to the master of the house. This is all about profit/ rewards in heaven after we have received the free gift of salvation by grace. Some will have great rewards, gold, silver, precous stones, others, wood hay and stubble. But all beleivers are saved.
Romans 9 is definitely about individual salvation. V 1-5 the Apostle Paul mentions how he wishes he could take the place of his kinsmen who are accursed. Accursed is talking about them going to hell. Paul then gives the solution to why Gods plan has not failed. Then he speaks about how God chooses the individuals He wishes out of these nations. The remnant. Then Paul goes into how God hardens who He wishes and shows mercy to who he wishes. Remember he just spoke of God hardening the Jews in v1-5 and how they are accursed (going to hell). See how this flows to Paul’s initial cause of concern? Romans 9:15-16 [15] For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” [16] So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy. Paul explains salvation has nothing to do with a man’s will but on God. Romans 9:20-21 [20] But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” [21] Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? We then have Paul specifically mention “vessels” and “vessel” plural and singular, speaking of God decides who’s saved by His mercy and who is damned by not receiving His mercy. Mercy here is explained as leading to being elected unto salvation.
John 3:16 First John 2:2. First Timothy 2:4 The Jews rejected Jesus as their messiah so God hardened their hearts. But God is not done with the Jews. He is going to save 144,000 of them during the tribulation. Revelation 7. And so many Gentiles that no man can number. Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the POWER of God unto salvation to everyone that BELIEVETH, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. John 3:16 Whosoever. Anyone. Romans 6:23 For the penalty of sin is death, and we all sin, First John 1:8, and we all die, but the GIFT of God is ETERNAL LIFE, through Jesus Christ our Lord. He paid our sin debt in full so we can never be condemned again. John 3:18. We can be chastened by the lord, Colossians 3:5-6, and we can lose our rewards in heaven, First Corinthians 3:11-15, but we cannot lose eternal life. John 6:47. That would make God a liar, and God cannot lie. Romans 3:26-28. Since Jesus paid it all we have nothing to boast in. You cannot boast in a free gift. First John 5:13.

@@jimkraft9445 It is apparent from the above Scripture that God is not finished with Israel. Paul tells us that a partial hardening has happened to Israel. This is so the Gentiles can be included in the covenantal faithfulness of God in his redemptive work. This was prophesied in Genesis 12:3 and reiterated in Galatians 3:8. In those two verses, God says that in Abraham all the nations will be blessed. Paul quotes Gen. 12:3 in Galatians and calls it the gospel. Obviously, God in his great and sovereign plan has worked all things after the counsel of His will (Eph. 1:11) so that the Gentiles would be saved. When the time of the Gentiles is over, God will move upon Israel. They will accept Jesus as the Messiah, and they will become a great and powerful nation used by God.
Apostle Paul would call most Western theologians (esp the “Reformed”) FALSE teachers. Read 1 Timothy. The ransom was paid for all. If one believes Jesus accomplishes the exact same for ALL, and nothing more, this would mean that people, who end up in heaven, are not there because of what Jesus did... because... he accomplished the exact same, and nothing less, for those who end up in hell! “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends IF you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I CHOSE YOU.”
John 15:13-16
Jesus did not choose the goats as his friends.
Jesus says:
“The Son of Man came....to give his life as a RANSOM for MANY (not all).”
Matthew 20:28
If Jesus ransomed the goats, they would all be saved.
“ I pray for them. I am NOT praying for the world (goats), but for those you have GIVEN ME, for they are yours. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine.” John 17:9-10
Jesus says he died for the sheep and at the same time told the unbelieving goats they were not his sheep so he did not die for them and Jesus specifically said he is not praying for the goats.
Jesus chose his friends and died for them, not people who were not his friends and who hated him.
If Jesus died for the unbelieving goats, then their sin of unbelief would be paid for and they would be saved.
Jesus says:
“I came down from heaven to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me: That I shall lose none of all he HAS GIVEN ME (the sheep) but raise them up at the last day.”
John 6:38-39
In John 10:28-30 Jesus said the sheep were all the Father had given him and he and the Father are one (in essence and purpose and will).
Jesus says:
“My sheep listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me.”
John 10:27
“I lay down my life for the sheep!”
John 10:15
Do you know why you do not believe Jesus laid down his life for the sheep?
“You do not believe because you are not my sheep.”
John 10:26
Instead of worrying if Jesus died for the goats going to hell, people better receive this teaching by Jesus himself because Jesus says:
“There is a judge for the one who rejects me and DOES NOT RECEIVE MY WORDS; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day!”
John 12:48
John Piper is asking a really strange question. I feel the question should be... Isn’t unlimited atonement more biblical than limited atonement ? The answer is yes. You can’t fit scripture to your own pleasing or to human logic. The Bible clearly states in 1 John 2:2 - “He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.”
It is for the whole world, but it’s applied to those who receive it by faith.
@@jaredlangdo2028 “he is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.” Seems like the application is for our sins , and the sins of the whole world. Where in that specific Bible verse do you see it only applied to one group?
@@Runner4530 if atonement is applied to the whole world without exemption then the whole world is saved.
@@josefrancisco8408 Bible verse please? Atonement alone doesn’t save. Show me a Bible verse that proves the atonement alone saves.
Please go and learn what is biblical hermeneutic before you try to create confusion for God's people. And also ask any Calvinist theologian whether they agree with your interpretation method! (Their answer is clearly no! because their theology will be a mess if they should agree with such a method!)
@@SetWillBill LOL No, you deny the scriptures as they LITERALLY say.....Matthew 1:21 is pretty clear...He shall save his people ( who are made up of jew and gentile) from their sins....It's limited to "his people"......see rev 5:9 "out of" every tongue, tribe, people and nation.
If universal atonement is true, then Hell will be EMPTY! There is not one person in Hell that Christ died for!
@@brianc81 Well, I have tried to be nice to you who do not know the scripture at all. If you can answer this very simple question then you have a place to comment, otherwise, my advice to you is study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Tim 2:15):
Israel is God's people in the old testament, and so there is two distinct groups of people, Israel and the Church who are called God's people.
God bless. Thanks pastor.
In the beginning was the Word and the Word was God. He created EVERYTHING, but for some reason His sacrifice is not big enough to invite the whole world that He created! To think that these doctrines are believed more and more today breaks my heart!
Read John 6,10,and 17, Jesus says He will die for,HIs sheep, the ones the Father has given Him, none will be missing.Christ died for a specific people, not possibly, but perfectly.Everyone that the Father gives to Jesus will be saved. If your going to deny this, then you have to deal with Jesus own words.
You’ve never heard His voice nor seen His shape.
Sounds nice, but then salvation depends on man’s choice.
Love that, brother. Hallelujah.
@@YourLocalRealist Because it does lol. Atonement is not applied without choice to have faith.
That's not what the Bible says
Romans 9:15-16
[15] For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” [16] So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.
Paul explains salvation has nothing to do with a man’s will but on God.
Romans 9:20-21
[20] But who are you, O man, to answer back to God?
@@jimkraft9445 Philippians 1:29
[29] For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake,
@@jimkraft9445 Are you denying Roman’s 9 is speaking of individual salvation after the explanation I provided?
Even those who reject the message of the gospel would one day believe, just as Paul did, thus becoming the FIRST in a pattern of people who would HEREAFTER believe unto life everlasting (1 Tim 1:13-16).
That’s false brother if he died for all then why isn’t that all being saved let’s use this Judas was he saved no where the people in the churches being lukewarm saved no
If one believes Jesus accomplishes the exact same for ALL, and nothing more, this would mean that people, who end up in heaven, are not there because of what Jesus did... because... he accomplished the exact same, and nothing less, for those who end up in hell!
This would mean that those who are in heaven are there because of something other than what Jesus accomplished!
If this is true then Jesus does not save anyone! This would mean you are saved by “something other than Jesus”... if you end up in heaven!
Noticed the first resource mentioned was a not the Bible and it’s clear direction. That should be a red flag to those of you who love the truth as only found in God’s word.
Unlimited atonement theologians don’t believe everyone is saved, derr. John should take a theology class. His passion sounds good but his words don’t sound good.
Not everyone is saved
That’s what you would call universalism which is widely accepted as a heresy
@@danielramirez1332 sorry bro unlimited atonement and universalism are two totally different things. A person needs to believe to be saved and Jesus could have died for everybody’s sins and people aren’t saved until they believe, that is perfectly logical and Biblical
I am more into Calvinism. But I also accept that Jesus Christ died for all.
Look up evangelical cross it the symbol of desiring God. My question are they worshipping the angels or God. remember Satan was the 5th cherubim. 5 is the number of death in the bible. all bible scholars use a law called "first mention or mentions" example: The first mention of Satan he was evil and a liar.Satan is like that throw the whole bible.
Calvinism is heresy.
There will never be a final consensus on this issue. Best to ignore it.
Finally someone who I agree with. lol. Truthfully though, no Human being will ever possibly even come close to understanding the mind of God. To argue over something we can never fully comprehend is futile. Many true believers still have trouble with the whole 6 days of creation, whilst they forget that God existed before his creation, and is therefore outside of it, thus not restricted by our understanding or concept of Time. We will never know how long One of Gods days was. Even now we know that time and space are distorted by mass and indeed gravity, hence why atomic clocks at different altitudes tell different times, yet both are correct.
Only God truly knows the answers. Peace and Love to you.
