    Nice job. I always enjoy you working on the tools most would scrap. Most tools I get are that bad. You give me lots of ideas. I am working on a monkey wrench about the same size. A friend found it in a plowed field. Rusted tight and full of dirt. He gave it to me and said save it. I'm working on it. Thanks

    Beautiful restomod. That wrench was is bad condition when you started, and now it has a new life besides looking terrific. I like the faceted top jaw which you preserved. I have some old monkey wrenches, but all are flat on top. I've never seen that name before, so you probably have something rare. All my wrenches are US. Your resto tips will help me with some of my plans. You deserve extra credit for rescuing a cool old wrench that would be too far gone for lots of people.

    Very interesting info on the etymology of monkey wrench. Who would have thought Jack Johnson patented a wrench? Did you happen to consult the OED? They tend to be extremely definitive about the origin of words and phrases.

      I couldn't find a precise origin. It seems like the expression started in England and worked its way over to the US.

    I always wonder about those coes brothers wrenches. They make the top jaw extend slightly further in back, implying it can be used as a hammer. We have all seen examples where someone used it as a hammer and it obviously is not fit for the job. But on the flip side we also always see jaws that have sprung because of the poor steel. Was the manufacturer perhaps thinking that if the user occasionally misused the wrench as a hammer, it would bend back the jaw into parallel position. I realized that sounds cynical, but every different make seems to have that slight step between the two jaws

    • @357magdad
      @357magdad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's an interesting theory! My experience with vintage tools has been that everything gets used as a hammer sometime in its life!
