Great review. I'm happy with the results you shared. Hornady makes 22 mag in 30 grain that travels at 2250 ft per second. I'd like to see how those hit a coconut.
If you wanna save fur damage use a FMJ. The 17 doesn't have the penetration of the 22mag but is flatter shooting. I have owned both and find the 22 mag more useful for my needs. Squirrel decapitation is common with the 17 HMR. Shot anywhere else there's nothing left for the frying pan. I use a Gamo Swarm magnum out to 50 yards. 22lr is good out to 75 yards still reasonably flat shooting. The 22 mag can cover out to around 150 yard using MPBR on about a 2 inch target. Hitting the top of the target close and the bottom at 150. Holding dead center. Excellent for varmints with no hold over or turret adjustment for elevation. Wind on the other hand is the enemy at extended range. Calmer days this setting is outstanding.
Great review. I’m getting back into firearms, I’m an Army Airborne Veteran from Ft.Bragg. I wanted to start introducing my 19 year old Son and 15 year old daughter how to shoot. I think the .22 is the perfect way to go.
I use a 17 over 22 mag for one reason. When dealing with woodchucks I don't have to worry as much about hitting things behind my target because of pass through. With extremely thin jacketed rounds it enters and pretty much explodes.
You can achieve similar results with 22mag using a 30 to 32 grain TNT projectile (which just means a larger cavity hollow point) but still have the versatility to use regular HP in many sizes, up to 50gr, or fmj as your application changes. I also carry DOPE cards for each type of round I have so I can quickly estimate hold over/under if I'm switching between different rounds. I typically don't take anything much past about 80 yards though, most often under 50.
Thanks very much for the video comparing the performance of 17HMR and the .22MAG. I was pleased to see that the 17HMR did as well as it did against the 22MAG (and especially out to 200 yards). Both are solid performing rim fire rounds.
The .17 hmr continues to surprise me to this day a hella lot of shell on a small round. Both fun to shoot and watched my grandpa drop deer regularly with a .22 mag ( he didnt care much for laws) 😂

I think some what between 250 and 300 mts would give the .17HMR a broader advantage difference in terms of residual energy and precision . Excellent video !!
.22 mag has more fpe at all ranges, the .17 has a very light bullet that bleeds its speed relatively quickly, at no distance can it overcome the more than double mass of the .22
I love the 22mag ! I just gets the job done. Saying that I just don’t have enough little critters in my neck of the woods to require the 17. However the misus has her 22lr in the shop right now getting a 20cal squeeze bore 22lr barrel made & fitted. 1:10 twist to stabilise 40 , 45 & 60gr bullets .
just got the same ammo delivered for my Heritage rough rider with the 22 mag cylinder can't wait to try it. I did have a hell of a time trying to find it in stock though.
I bought mine right after the lockdown, it was hard to find.Love the poor mans colt as some people call it.Im also cosidering the rancher,wish it came in 22 mag though.I only own revolvers,love fanning them,although its hard on a cylinder,its a blast.I guess i have watched too many westerns.Heritage makes quality firearms for the price.My only gripe is fixed sights,shoots a little to the right.I found out that although you cant adjust the sights,you can rotate the barrel,which did the trick.Im going to buy another one with a cross draw holster,and the black satin grips.

I knew the 17 was a fast round, but as the author pointed out....the bullets is a light weight. Considering that, it did a lot of damage to the coconut at 200 yards. Don't need to sell me on the 2 mag. Very under rated.
I think the 17 is a little flatter shooting which I like for groundhogs. I hold a hair off the fur at 150! Wind is always a big concern though! After 150 I use 22 center fire!
Great video. I think the bullet has more explosive properties as velocity drops into the sweet spot with the 17. Anything below a certain distance doesn't allow the expansion.
I think a hard target doesn't represent the 17hmr potential. It's designed for soft targets. I'd love to see this test on ballistic gel. My best bet is the heavier .22 will just create a stream line wound, where the 17hmr would actually have a more devastating/expansive wound channel.

@Lowballinoutdoorz Ruger made a 17 HMR revolver. It is a great firearm. Bear Creek Arsenal makes a very affordable 17 HMR upper that has a 20-inch Stainless Steel barrel solid and very accurate. It's much cheaper than the Alexander Arms rifle, and you can get 15 round magazines for the rifle Vs 10 and they are the same dimensions as a standard 20 round 223 Remington/ 5.56 x 45 magazine.
I like the 22 mag for plinking. The 17 mag doesn’t have enough energy for dropping my pop up targets at distance. 22 mag rounds are cheaper also. 17gr ballistics vaporize gophers though. I never came across 22 mag 25gr or 50gr to experiment with yet. I think 22 mag offers more versatility.

I’d like to see some 17 hmr 20 grain cci game point or Hornady 20 gr xtp. I recently just bought a Ruger Precision really debated between the 17 & 22 wmr, ended up going with the 17, hopefully she shoots as good as my old 18 yr old savage 17hmr

Interesting video and results. I once shot a Rabbit in the neck at about 15 yards with a 17HMR and it zipped straight through, absolutely no expansion, it looked like a 177 air rifle wound. I've decapitated them at 50 yards with 17HMR. I think It's a little inconsistent in it's expansion but it always kills small vermin sized critters and the flatter trajectory is an absolute god send when shooting out in open areas with nowhere to hide/stalk in, but when you get into reaching out to those seriously long shots, around the 250-300 yard mark the 17HMR is so much easier to work with than 22MAG. They both have their uses, I think 22MAG is better for Fox/Coyote sized critters within 100 yards than pretty much anything else available. 17HMR is a Rabbit/Ground Hog sniper rifle.

I’ve killed 4 coyotes with my Savage 17HMR and dropped them all all the spot, my dad has also killed two with it , Mine were all within 100 yards and my dads were at 150 give or take, pretty impressive for such a small round!
Also, put at least 3 rounds in any "target" remember that H&K came up with 17 cal round with careless Ammo for it's G3 assault rife they work on thier advanced infantry fighting weapon back in the 1980's
It's a fine line, where I am it's the hornady or the winchester super x hollow points, my cz will shoot a lot tighter groups with the hornady and fliers are very rare. Slightly more energy is meaningless if the round doesn't hit. Gotta find what your gun shoots well and stick with them if you can.
The rifle barrels and stock setups are in need of explanation also, please address this also. Any old gun off the shelf doesn't mean 3/4" groups at 150.
Well, both of these rifles were stock off the shelf savages. The 17hmr was the heavy barrel with accutrigger and the 22wmr was the minimalist stock. Nothin special
Nice comparison between the 17 HMR and the 22 magnum. And as great as the 17 is, to be fair though had you compared similar grains that would ‘HAVE’ been a more even keeled comparison. But comparing a 30 grain and a 17 grain against each other really is unfair to one of them in one aspect and unfair to the other in other aspects. Next time try even grains and let’s see what happens.
I mean they really don't make heavy grain 17hmr bullets like the heaviest iv ever seen has been 20gn... but iv not seen either bullet on the shelves in awhile. Thanks for watchin bud

And yea since china’s gift to us, covid, like a lot of calibers 17 has become impossible to find but lately it’s been showing up at cabela’s and other store albeit a much higher price than before, like $5 to $8 higher
how come nobody brings up nor shoots the cci maxi-mag & the hp+v in the 22mag that has 2200 fps? ive had both and there both awesome!.. but the 22 mag especially with 2200fps ammo hits harder and bucks the wind better
Ya definitely need to try a bunch of different ammo, but it's tough to find right now. I may be wrong but I think the 22mag I used in this video was the maxi mag. I can't remember, thanks for watchin !

Like the video but would like to see the 20 grain HMR. No one i know who shoots at fur uses 17gr. Every test for hmr is at paper, melons, water jugs and now coconuts with 17gr. You used larger gr magnum on smaller gr hmr. they have a 30 gr magnum. The hmr will outshoot the magnum al longer ranges with better accuracy. Under 100 yds the magnum is much better. GRIZ

17 is awesome, the energy dump from the expansion is what makes it so good. The bb sized bullet explodes or disintegrates on impact; so... Although the .22 mag has more energy/power across the board. People always caught up on speed lol, but the mass accounts for way more. Heavier has more energy 99% of the time! Science & math doesn't lie or have favorites. Fact is 22mag will always have more energy no matter the distance & give a lot more penetration than 17hmr!! Faster bullets sound really good but that's all, they have to be lighter to increase the speed & that's no good; just sounds cool. Like all the lead free ammo is super fast bc its really light & they try to use speed to pick up the slack.

I replaced my 12 gauge Turkey shotgun with my 17HMR. Base of the neck shots put them out instantly and no BB's in my Turkey dinner.

Also, put at least 3 rounds in any "target" remember that H&K came up with 17 cal round with careless Ammo for it's G3 assault rife they work on thier advanced infantry fighting weapon back in the 1980's

It's a fine line, where I am it's the hornady or the winchester super x hollow points, my cz will shoot a lot tighter groups with the hornady and fliers are very rare. Slightly more energy is meaningless if the round doesn't hit. Gotta find what your gun shoots well and stick with them if you can.

Well, both of these rifles were stock off the shelf savages. The 17hmr was the heavy barrel with accutrigger and the 22wmr was the minimalist stock. Nothin special
Iv shot several savage 93's with heavy barrel all of them shot exceptionally well. Hope that helps.
Nice comparison between the 17 HMR and the 22 magnum. And as great as the 17 is, to be fair though had you compared similar grains that would ‘HAVE’ been a more even keeled comparison. But comparing a 30 grain and a 17 grain against each other really is unfair to one of them in one aspect and unfair to the other in other aspects. Next time try even grains and let’s see what happens.
I mean they really don't make heavy grain 17hmr bullets like the heaviest iv ever seen has been 20gn... but iv not seen either bullet on the shelves in awhile. Thanks for watchin bud

And yea since china’s gift to us, covid, like a lot of calibers 17 has become impossible to find but lately it’s been showing up at cabela’s and other store albeit a much higher price than before, like $5 to $8 higher

how come nobody brings up nor shoots the cci maxi-mag & the hp+v in the 22mag that has 2200 fps? ive had both and there both awesome!.. but the 22 mag especially with 2200fps ammo hits harder and bucks the wind better
Ya definitely need to try a bunch of different ammo, but it's tough to find right now. I may be wrong but I think the 22mag I used in this video was the maxi mag. I can't remember, thanks for watchin !

Like the video but would like to see the 20 grain HMR. No one i know who shoots at fur uses 17gr. Every test for hmr is at paper, melons, water jugs and now coconuts with 17gr. You used larger gr magnum on smaller gr hmr. they have a 30 gr magnum. The hmr will outshoot the magnum al longer ranges with better accuracy. Under 100 yds the magnum is much better. GRIZ

They did. Try the Remington 33gr accu tips, it has the highest ballistic coefficient of any 22wmr round.

I mean the 17hmr shares the same case as the 22mag... so...... and the 22lr has a way smaller case

17 is awesome, the energy dump from the expansion is what makes it so good. The bb sized bullet explodes or disintegrates on impact; so... Although the .22 mag has more energy/power across the board. People always caught up on speed lol, but the mass accounts for way more. Heavier has more energy 99% of the time! Science & math doesn't lie or have favorites. Fact is 22mag will always have more energy no matter the distance & give a lot more penetration than 17hmr!!
Faster bullets sound really good but that's all, they have to be lighter to increase the speed & that's no good; just sounds cool. Like all the lead free ammo is super fast bc its really light & they try to use speed to pick up the slack.

A 17 hmr has more velocity at 200 yards than a 22lr does straight out of the barrel that's impressive 17 win mag blows 22 mag out of the water

Not anymore. Slightly bend the rear feed lips and that fixes the problem.
