Hey I am a female and I just had a career change, I am starting my garden maintenance business and I am doing everything that you are teaching in your videos. I had a late career change in life form being an armed guard like a slave to now leaving the old paradigm of 9 to 5 and becoming my own creator. Btw I just turned 50 but I am very athlete and always had blue collar jobs. Don't let your age or finances deter you people, you are never to late to being. The only thing that stands in your way is you. Believe in yourself because if you don't, no one else will!!! Let's go!!
Hi! I am a 47 year young female and quit a landscaping company last year to start my own garden maintenance company! Good luck in your ventures! It's great being my own boss.
31 years old and after being a nurse, an IT professional, and a freelance graphic designer my husband said he wanted to start his own landscaping business after being fired from his landscaping employer who treated him like absolute garbage and I was like HELL YES!!! I feel absolutely free. Hustle hustle hustle all the way to the top!
Keith, this is kind of random, but I'd like to just make a mention of something from the client side of things especially for everyone watching. I've watched Keith for years, back when I was running a side lawn care business to make ends meet, and up until I got my TH-cam channel off the ground which is now my main income. Keith gives fantastic advice. Since then, I've had the opportunity to do well for myself and meet several other individuals that do well for themselves. I always did my own lawn (since I had all of the equipment), but now my time is better spent working on my TH-cam channel, so I've converted over to a lawn care client and I've been so for about the last 12 months. The number 1 thing that myself and other individuals who would be "higher end" clients (there's always those people like what Keith is describing who will pinch pennies trying to save $20 bucks, but a bunch of us don't) are looking for is quality of work. Straight up. I (and others) are willing to pay top dollar for 2 things: 1. Top tier work (you do exactly what you say you're going to do and you do it well and you DON'T slack off after the first job if more are booked) 2. A proper schedule (you do it when you say you're going to do it, and if you can't do it, you communicate why and when you'll finish) I've gone through FIVE different lawn care companies in the past 12 months. Five. The first four were just awful. Recognize for a lot of you, that is your competition. The bar, in this instance, is low in my area (Florida). By awful I mean they simply would not do services they said they would provide (in my case it was keeping the plant beds clear and...of all things...edging. I've had 4 companies that didn't know how to edge). If I had to guess, I imagine it's because a lot of them are taking advantage of the huge elderly population around me, however when dealing with someone who ran a lawn care company like I did and like you folks do, we know the difference when you edge and when you don't edge. The fifth company was a young, hungry 24 year old kid that told me he was working 120 accounts a week. I can't imagine how he managed it without dying, but he does it. He quoted me a price for the things I wanted for my yard, and I flat out told him I'd pay double if he maintained my yard exactly how I wanted. He did, he's continuing to do so, and he's making double what he quoted. You guys, especially those of you that work hard and do GOOD QUALITY WORK are worth a LOT. Seriously. You're worth way more than you think. Just remember that, value yourselves, and recognize that this world is filled with people that want a lot of lawn care done and have been failed by multiple other companies before you. I don't care what your equipment looks like, I don't care what your truck looks like, I just care what my yard looks like when you're done. So, big respect to the 24 year old kid who's showing up full squads of guys before him. So this is just one guy's experience, but it's something to consider.
Keith Kalfas hey I want to be like you would it make sense to have someone clean the gutters if you have a fear of hight and then you do the window cleaning or how would that play off because a business has more then one person
Love how you explained why "we" a small growing business would need to charge a $250 minimum. I'm currently at a $195 minimum for spring clean up and it's 2022 with crazy high prices right now (like gas/fertilizer/food). But a leaf removal job can be more. I can't compete on prices with theses big commercial companies but our advantage is in personal care, same professional on your property and of course my customer service. We really do care and fully invested, not just in our business, but in doing our very best for every client. Anyways, that's my sales pitch, but overall this is one of my favorite videos. Helps me feel like we are on the right track.
Also was out today doing Spring Clean Ups (in Western New York State) AND was listening to Extreme Ownership!!! When contemplating starting a lawn care business a few years ago I listened to one of your videos. Last year was my 2nd year full-time and we did $165,000 in revenue with 170 weekly mowing clients at the end of the year. Thank you Keith for all your help!!!
Kudos Matt that is awesome! How did you grow you clientele so quickly? I am getting slammed from CL ads and Google Ads for Spring Clean up, but not sure the same will hold true for general lawn care and mowing. Can you let us in on your secret?

Informative video, good to know what the totally legit landscape company charges for spring cleanups. I’m not the “ big brand lawn care guy”. I’m one old guy, drive an old truck, don’t have much overhead all equipment is payed for years ago. My cleanups are simple, pick up the sticks and branches, blow out the beds, and use a drag behind tine rake while bagging with zero turn. I either leave debris in a paper yard bag, dump in the woods, or haul off, depends on the property. I am on and off a 1/4 acre ish in 1 hour, I charge $70 to $80, again low overhead, yes I pay taxes but not any insurance, no workmans comp. You have to know your customers and what they expect from you. My customer base of 53, are not the ones in our neighborhood with the perfectly groomed landscaping who insist on more must be better, my base wants nice but loves cheaper. Many fixed income retirees, families with kids, many who cant do their own work and don’t want to spend a lot. I offer an alternative to the higher end service. My lawns look totally as good or better than the neighborhood average, and I make $60 per hour and up. Know your customers, know your own budget, know what you want from self employment. Ive been self employed for 27 years, my services have morphed several times over this time, I get bored, I wear out my knees so I stop doing baseboards.....you evolve. Came here for a boost of positive energy. Kicking off the season already starting with the same challenges. I’m just making my vow now to skip the obvious cheapskates. Such a waste of mental energy. Got a Dewalt battery powered hedge trimmer. Great piece of equipment and very lightweight.
Alot depends on the area you live in, but my general rule of thumb is $75-$100 per hour on something I do like that. That looked pretty easy so good price for that. I don't include weeding or trimming for that price either that is extra. Also like you said, once you get that contact and that initial job upsell them on all the other things you do. Never assume people know or assume what you do. Big mistake. One $220 job can turn into $1000 easy if you upsell your services. Nice work.
Bro, you are hilarious!! Thanks for the videos! I am new to the industry having changed from working hospitality after 25 years. This will be the start of my first full season (only got 2 months in before the season ended) and I was searching for a refresher course before I go back. You just reminded me about how much I love working outside and how fulfilling the work is! Best decision I ever made. Can't wait to get back in the truck and get at it!!
You crack me up with that grin the whole time lol. Also the guy who got me going a couple years ago. Always reccomend your channel to everyone and my guys. Good luck on the new season.
I used to do garden maintenance, once the grass stops growing most would say, see you next year. So I found best to give them a price for the year, paid by 12 monthly installments that way the garden stays tidy all the year round.
Upsell all the time , but be careful you can turn off new customers. Your prices are for your area. Up here in Massachusetts we get $350+ for that size property.
Great content. Honestly you motivated me to change my pricing and gave me new ideas. Thanks keep posting this is awesome!!! I just made my first TH-cam video because you inspired me!!!
Our cleanups are clearing beds , redefined edging , trim shrubs , haul debris . I been quoting and selling around the $200- 400 range. With mulch double that on average. I was curious as to whether I was bidding right. 50 percent closing rate
That sounds perfectly reasonable. My clean ups almost always fall between $250-600. Sometimes it's hard getting through to a potential client how many diffirent services they are getting and all the fine tuning a landscaper does after the debris are picked up. Some people can see a nice yard, others don't care as much.
@@kklandscaping7919 exactly. Our job is to beautify the property .. in all aspects. Some people's jaws drop when I hand them a bid for 1200 for a normal cleanup, 3-5 yds mulch installed, and climbing because they want a crown reduction or trimming of decent size tree. I tell them flat out it's minimum $200 just to even put my gear on and go up to make ONE CUT because of the risk and skill it takes to safely climb
@@tnrcleancare7847 yep, that's right. And thats a great price for clean up, mulch, and climbing/precise trimming. The 50% that you're getting are the ones you want. Good customers that pay for good work. Happy spring TNR have a great year!
Great video Keith. Spring cleanups are definitely a money maker if you price them right. Having a base price of 250 like you have is great also because no matter the size of the property it still seems to take a little more time then you think.
It's 55 degrees & sunny here in WI. I'll have my business up & running this year, but it's looking like it'll be closer to fall before that happens. Your videos are training me & keeping me from giving up on the dream.
Keith just subscribed!! I am Just starting landscape business I seen this video and I see my self . AWESOME video I just discovered . THANK YOU.KEEP UP THE KNOWLEDGE BROTHA .From Flagstaff Arizona
man, I aspire to but just like this guy. Did yall see the way he hit those hedges around them corners as if He was just one with his hedge trimmer and all else around him just didn't matter except for the hedge, the hedge trimmer, and His coolism!
Ahhh Keith. I just got home and saw this video that you posted today. I just did a property clean up. It took me about 4 1/2 hrs. mowed the property 5 times, I mow and bag to do a property clean up, got the leaves cleaned up, I did use my pole saw and trimmed 2 branches that took about 20 minutes. The customer was an established customer that I have had for years. I usually charge by the hour. But that is changing because of you. I billed for 6 hrs for a total of $180. I thought it was a decent day but when I gave the customer the final bill he was shocked. He said he was expecting $300-$400. Man did I miss the mark. But now I am going to start having a fixed price to begin. I wish I would have seen your video before I went out and did the work. lol I have already mowed 6 yards this year and now we have rain and snow coming in this weekend. lol
I charge $45 per man hour for spring clean ups and a minimum of $50 to haul away the debris. For the yard Keith was doing I would have charged $200 just for the clean up and removal, that does not include pulling weeds from flower bed, or trimming hedges or trees. My average this year has been $350 per yard. I am in So. NH, so some of the yards are $500-$600 in the rural areas and $200 -$300 in the more densely populated.
@@jackfoxxx68 This is my 4th year in business. I have learned a lot from Keith. I now see that I have been under charging. My new customers are getting higher rates and my old customers I am working my rates up. When I began I just wanted the job and I wanted to do the best I could for a cheap as I could to make the customer happy. I have now learned from Keith that I don't want to try to survive I want to live. Keith is the man!!!! After seeing Keith's video I have decided to start charging $250 just to show up per yard. The $250 will be part of the final price. But of course if Keith ever hires me for a job his rate will be $2500. lol Just joking Keith. We all love you
Always excited to see a new Landscaping Employee Trap video. Great video Keith as always. I always get motivated watching your vids. Keep up all that hard work man and I'm sure you'll get that house before you know it.
Hey Keith, thanks for your Videos! I'm in the 2nd yr with my business, Perfect Green LLC. I like how you make your content so relatable. You are awesome!
StrykerV hey. I have a 1500 Chevy and I pull a 7x12 dump. Honestly, it’s rough. Leaves and brush, no problem. When I get 5 yards of material in there, rough! Hard on the engine, hard on the brakes. I’ve yet to get a brake box though. I love the dump trailer though. Really allows me to take on bigger jobs.
@@militarycutlawnservices7804 thank you. I def want it for debris mainly. But I do mulch as well. My current trailer has electric brakes and 5200 lbs. The dumps I'm looking at would have dual electric brakes. They def help slow down if your heavy. I also drive way more conservative heavy. Thinking 6 x 12. Maybe haul mini excavator for jobs. I may upgrade to a 3500 in 2 years and then trailer won't matter.
How do you keep your workers busy all winter? The last couple years I’ve picked up over 50 Christmas light accounts in the Chicagoland area that keep us busy when not doing snow Removal. Wondering what you do so you don’t have to rotate employees every year
Hi,im starting on the business, and im picking anything, but i have question, how much should i charge for removing a fence or how this will fork for me.. thanks
Time and Materials! How long will it take you to remove the fence.. Hourly rate What is the cost to have the fence taken to the dump + Dump Fee's or for a bin large enough to handle it How much profit do you want for you time No one can tell you how much you should charge, thats up to you! How tall is the fence? Style? Length? $65/hour $250/40 yard bin $$?? Profit for your time
Hey Keith. I was curious as to how you speak with customers. How do you sell jobs to clients? Im in the "fire'" right now, especially since rent is coming up and all I have is 100 dollars in my pocket. Any help would be appreciated
@@sergioavila43 My friend, Your social security number and your name are all you need to make money and collect a check in YOUR name. If you make over $30,000 (in Canada) you have to register for a tax account, claim your income and pay your taxes on that $30k... Since you wont make more then 10k, pocket the money. Since your just looking to make quick money. *Fake it till you make it!* Walk around a nicer neighborhood and start knocking on door of customers that need work done to their yards.. Explain to them " Hello, my name is blah blah, im just starting my lawncare season and had a cleanup job a couple blocks over and am in the area for the day." "If you would like a yard cleanup, Im your guy!" If their not interested say thank you for your time and have a great day, go to the next property. I If they are interested explain "Your yard looks like about a 3 hour job, I typically charge $65/hour but since im in the area ill discount you to $120 for leaf clean up, garden cleanout and to haul all of it away" Immediately they will do the math and see the deal!! $65 saving for a job that needs done, that cost them over $200 the previous year... Its a win win. If you have a trailer with you or truck, a blower or rakes and some tarps you are in business and wont get many turndowns. If no... well good luck lol probably 75% will turn you down saying they have a guy already or whatever, dont get discouraged!!! They will see your neighbor down the road agreed and will come and offer the job back to you!
Our old company used to charge us $250 or $260 for a clean up for 5 guys. I live on an acre lot just about with an EXCESSIVE amount of leaves. No matter how long the job took to clean up, 3-5 ish hours was average, it was only that base price. Now I’m helping out with the property since we’ve moved on from that guy after not showing up with all of the leaves on the property, narrowly missing the collection. Hoping the new guy doesn’t charge more than that tbh, but can’t control it.
Thanks Kieth! I will definitely be sharing this to all my Landscaping friends and associates Amazing content Even in my industry please keep me coming Something is different too, in a good way. Upgrading video angles & production?
How much do you break down your estimates when you give them to a customer? Do you give them 1 lump sum number? Do you group things together for a few different prices? Do you price each thing individually?
Kieth, problem I’m coming up with is getting rid of the yard debris. Competition I think has that friend where they can dump just anywhere but I need to charge to and from landfill or dumpsters. Thoughts?

Great content. Honestly you motivated me to change my pricing and gave me new ideas. Thanks keep posting this is awesome!!! I just made my first TH-cam video because you inspired me!!!
Hands down
Best video you've produced. You go man. Hope you have a good $$$$ year!
Greg
Stepping the game up big bro
man, I aspire to but just like this guy. Did yall see the way he hit those hedges around them corners as if He was just one with his hedge trimmer and all else around him just didn't matter except for the hedge, the hedge trimmer, and His coolism!
220 is good, 4 prestean look 250 Base price.
Blowout, leaves away debris removed.
We all love you
I laughed so hard when you popped up outta that shrub!
Kieth you never lie. Get that money son!!!!
Hahaha love your videos keep the humor going great job 💪👏
You are amazing dawg! 😂😂🙏🏼🦾
Keith you are a boss my man! The Lacoste jacket you looking crispy! 👌🏻✅😂
Keith, this is the stuff we love. Do work, make it crispy, get cheddar!
Old video...thats a 150 pulling a dump? what size trailer is it and how does it handle? i have a 1500 and want a dump not sure about 6x10 or 6x12 10k
Haha Keith... I was looking for a response possibly about what size your trailer is
StrykerV hey.
Hourly rate
What is the cost to have the fence taken to the dump + Dump Fee's or for a bin large enough to handle it
How much profit do you want for you time
No one can tell you how much you should charge, thats up to you! How tall is the fence? Style? Length?
$65/hour
$250/40 yard bin
$$?? Profit for your time
Are you still woth Housecall pro? I use them too
@ 6:58 I do it all the time, that's when you know landscaping is your life lol
Yes sir haha
Proud of ya brotha! You've came along way since I started watching you. Keep up the great work! #untrapped
Hi, how much can you legally put in that trailer and pull with your f-150? What size is that trailer? Thanks and have a good weekend.
Way to keep it 1000 Keith!!!!!!!!!
Great work!! Amazing video!
Look out Keith.Keep up the good work!
I was about to ask about your first video. SMH. I like how you evolved into what you are from what you were.
Hey Keith. I was curious as to how you speak with customers. How do you sell jobs to clients? Im in the "fire'" right now, especially since rent is coming up and all I have is 100 dollars in my pocket. Any help would be appreciated
Sergio Avila message me dannyj714@gmail.com
Buy a squeegee and a scrubber, get a bucket from a super market and go store to store offering window cleaning
@@taval29 I'm probably over thinking the process but do I need anything to operate legally? Would I ask for the manager? And what should I charge?
@@sergioavila43 My friend, Your social security number and your name are all you need to make money and collect a check in YOUR name. If you make over $30,000 (in Canada) you have to register for a tax account, claim your income and pay your taxes on that $30k... Since you wont make more then 10k, pocket the money.
Since your just looking to make quick money. *Fake it till you make it!*
Walk around a nicer neighborhood and start knocking on door of customers that need work done to their yards.. Explain to them
" Hello, my name is blah blah, im just starting my lawncare season and had a cleanup job a couple blocks over and am in the area for the day." "If you would like a yard cleanup, Im your guy!"
If their not interested say thank you for your time and have a great day, go to the next property. I
If they are interested explain "Your yard looks like about a 3 hour job, I typically charge $65/hour but since im in the area ill discount you to $120 for leaf clean up, garden cleanout and to haul all of it away"
Immediately they will do the math and see the deal!! $65 saving for a job that needs done, that cost them over $200 the previous year... Its a win win. If you have a trailer with you or truck, a blower or rakes and some tarps you are in business and wont get many turndowns.
If no... well good luck lol
probably 75% will turn you down saying they have a guy already or whatever, dont get discouraged!!! They will see your neighbor down the road agreed and will come and offer the job back to you!
@@ChapmanClips thank you so much bro. That's what I needed to hear. Much appreciated, I'll give it a go tomorrow morning
You're really fun to watch 👀im learning about the business since me and my uncle just started a small one ^_^!
I own the same dump trailer, and the same phone (if its a note 9) if it is I would love to know how you like the spen and if you use it often.
How long does it take to do a Bronze package? And is it always 2 guys?
Please don't ever do another serious video. The fire marshall bill character is where it's at! haha loved the video keith! Happy spring.
Ok...il turn it up a notch. Love you bro haha
Great Video Keith,Love the music mate.Thankyou
We charge $350 base for spring clean up. Or $115 per hour. Whichever works best for the customer.
How many guys are in a WE?
How much should i charge for pruning a weep willow tree?
How many of those do you do a day?
Glad to see the merchandise for sale
Thanks Kieth! I will definitely be sharing this to all my Landscaping friends and associates
Amazing content
Even in my industry please keep me coming
Something is different too, in a good way. Upgrading video angles & production?
Does any one have tips on edging I kind of suck at it
How much do you break down your estimates when you give them to a customer? Do you give them 1 lump sum number? Do you group things together for a few different prices? Do you price each thing individually?
Line items. Very transparent.
Kieth, problem I’m coming up with is getting rid of the yard debris. Competition I think has that friend where they can dump just anywhere but I need to charge to and from landfill or dumpsters. Thoughts?
Hi i know this video is for landscaping i found you in the window glass info. My son is 16 and he is good at painting moving things etc. So on ur window cleaning your links arent working i am looking for the link for yiur di tank amd window belt.
Killing it!!
250 is cheap for that size clean up where I'm from ...im at 300 at a minimum for anything we do, how many guys will you have on that job and how long would it take?
Hell yeah, Jocko Wilink is the man!! Thank you for your content bro and advice 😊👍🏼
