the T-Pose emote in Fortnite is really funny because all of the characters are created in an A-Pose, so they couldn't even cheap out on it, they had to animate the arms raising
If i remember correctly, the T-Pose emote, they animated in this order "-Raise Arms + ominious music-" ----> "Normal/Intimidating state" ----> "Boredom/Tiredness + arms slightly fall out of place" ----> "-Shake Yourself to keep composure-" and it repeats, all in 5 to 6 seconds
1:30 I love the little detail of Gimberly’s shoulder getting tired from holding the t-pose. See how long you can do it, it can get tough, or I’m just weak 😅
I've had to hold this for 10 minutes while a seamstress demonstrated to some students how pinning different positions on clothing can help fit a client's shape for refitting and I've got to say it gets EXHAUSTING
0:41 I love the Gimberly is distracted for a second by her A-Pose counterpart then quickly snaps back to reality. It really gives life to her, she I love that she has a personality.
That was mostly due to one side being a human arm and the other robot (the robot arm was easier to weightpaint to the armature so an A-pose sufficed but a human arm with clothes over it needs much finer weightpainting so a T-pose or even a straight raised pose is needed to get to the arm pits)
it's the same for characters from games like Splatoon where their hair is really bendy and flexible. spawning characters like Marina who have long hair or a squid/octopus in SFM is always funny to see as their tentacles are always sticking out in a very stiff and unnatural straight line as opposed to how bouncy and fluid they usually are loolll
Another Tip about T-Pose! A majority of VR games with Full-Body Tracker Support (a system where you can use extra objects to calculate legs in the real world) actually use T-Pose instead of A-Pose! I’ve always wondered why, but now that I’ve watched your video, it’s because the shoulders need to move a lot more, especially up and down in Y-Poses and A-Poses, making the T-Pose the best for said arm movements.
Something I am surprised you didn't bring up was the semi-uncommon "I-Pose", where a character is modeled with every limb facing downwards, or adjacently so. Granted, this is only applicable in incredibly specific scenarios but one of the most common ways I see it is when a character is modeled with Individual Meshes rather than a singular Skinned Mesh. ------------------- Granted, this may not be the video for that because -- again -- this is mostly for a simplification of the poses in question and why what is what, but I-poses hold a unique position between Traditionals (T-pose, A-pose and the coined "Hug-Pose") and the Unusuals. Good video regardless, but this felt like a missed nuanced topic within this discussion. Kudos & Cheers.
My favourite default model pose is Smash Ultimate's Kraid model. It's a T-pose except his legs are extended forward as if he's sitting. I call it the bum pose. The weirdest thing is that the character NEVER assumes a similar sitting position in the game and the bum pose only results in additional stretching that otherwise wouldn't be there. There's little discernable reason why they didn't give him a regular T-pose, but it's really funny, like a plush toy.
I love how he put Team Fortress 2 A-Pose as an example, a posing is possible ingame when you pick up a weapon while your weapon was out of ammo, and youd enter a-pose stage. Today its a meme
I remember I tried to make a 3d model with its arms at the side, bc I didn’t know the purpose of the T pose, and trying to rig the arms just pulled the body and leg mesh with the arms bc of automatic weight painting. It looked goofy lol Also, hilarious coincidence that the model of Chai from HiFi Rush was used here when the news of the studios revival broke today!

Computers actually normally don’t store rotations as 3 values anymore, due to Gimbal lock - they’re typically stored as a quaternion or matrix, but then exposed to humans as these 3 Euler angles :)
It is nice seeing Half-Life/TF2 things on a Doodley video. It'd be interesting for you to tackle how FPS weapon view-models are animated, since that's kind of in a category of it's own and has slightly different workflows from how animation is traditionally made (from what I've seen)
I've been using Milanote for fighting games, helps me remember who has what and anything extra I need to know like frame data or follow up options. Brilliant stuff honestly.
That's a really good idea, actually. I've never had a great way to keep track of frame data outside of just looking stuff up on Shoryuken, but then it's *everything* rather than what you want to focus on. Thanks!

when the heavy showed up the first time A posing i literally just laughed for a good bit cause some of the random A posas (or civilian pose i guess) are just funny to see
I love the little personality bits you weave into these, like with Gimberly looking at things and then remembering "oh right I'm supposed to be demonstrating a T-pose!". It's just fun and makes paying attention easier. Re Nintendo: my favorite default pose is probably Craig Cuttlefish's default pose in Splatoon 3. His arms are at a T, but he's hunched over and squatting since he's always doing that to depict being super old. It looks very silly, even by bind pose standards.
Honestly, this video is exactly what I needed. I'm working on a model right now and was torn between choosing an A-pose or a T-pose, so this info helped a lot. Plus, the sponsor segment finally made me decide to try Milanote out and it's honestly really good. I think I'm gonna use it to help plan out the story I'm working on an hopefully plan to animate!
tf2 characters, even in animation systems, still look terrifying while a-posing you wouldn't even know if they'd start randomly sliding on the floor or the sky and going towards you and defying collision
It’s funny because in tf2, there’s a glitch that allows you to walk around stuck in the a pose. So imagine your engineer setting up a nest and you just see this unit of a man in such a dominating pose just around the corner. It’s really the stuff of nightmares
Ah the A-pose one of the funniest inside jokes in team fortress two. Nothing like seeing a heavy moving around without any animations killing people and then kill binding
Something funny I'd like to add is how Mario's default pose is handled in Super Mario 64. Internally, Mario is stored with all his parts compressed into a small form. (Imagine Mario laying down, except his legs and arms are put inside his main body.) However, the default pose is an A-pose, especially noticable when getting squashed or stuck, as Mario lacks a unique animation for that.

@@SheepUndefined Yup! I discovered like, an hour before this video went live that the pose is partially based on the most relaxed pose possible, which astronauts naturally take when they're sleeping in zero gravity. A few ancient threads on Polycount actually suggested this pose (including flexing the legs a bit) to create the most naturally posed model possible.
@@doodley3d Yupyup! I was gonna comment it myself, but Ken beat me to it lol. I think the idea is that it's the like, halfway point for all of your limbs, so there'll be minimal volume loss at most angles. I imagine it's a bit of a pain to model out characters in that way, but I'm still a bit new to character modeling.
It's not really a pain to model a character like that so much as it is a pain to rig, at least if you model it exactly the way astronauts sleep. Better to have the IK legs straight and on the ground. But for the arms (like the "hug" pose), you can have the arms bent for most characters and it doesn't cause much issue.
omg as a (hopefully) future animation student, i love your videos, they make animation look way less scary, thank you for all you do funny doodle man❤️

But for the arms (like the "hug" pose), you can have the arms bent for most characters and it doesn't cause much issue.
omg as a (hopefully) future animation student, i love your videos, they make animation look way less scary, thank you for all you do funny doodle man❤️
I recently finished my first Blender animation, and after all the hurdles I went over, Milanote looks like a genuinely awesome tool to help along the process. WAY better than just using Notepad to write down things lmao Gonna give it a go for my next project!
Chai's pose being half A and half T is something i love so much
