With the Legend of Korra series continued in the new comic Turf Wars, we figured it was time to look back and see how Korrasami came to be. We also talk about heteronormative views in media, why LGBT relationship cues sometimes are overlooked, and why it's important to put representation in children's media!

Great video. My favorite part about Korra and Asami is that they never had a toxic relationship towards each other even when they were in a love triangle. This almost never happens when two women are pitted against one another. In fact, Korra and Asami's relationship is more consistent and supportive than all the other relationships/friendships in the show.

No offense but uh... didn't Korra and Asami have like no interactions for most of the first two seasons? That doesn't seem like a very consistent and supportive relationship.... And that's also why this relationship isn't realistic, like, at all. No sane person would EVER have romantic feelings for someone who assaulted their boyfriend lol.

asami did support and help korra in book 2, korra even entrusted her father’s life with asami and directly asked her to take him back home.
asami evens says “i like korra”(albeit in a non-romantic way at first) to mako when she wanted him to sort out his feelings.
there’s a lot of things you just decide to dismiss entirely.
the reason they fell for each other has nothing to do with their ex-boyfriend anyway
One of the biggest relationship flags I noticed in book 4 was how quick Korra was to apologize to Asami when she said something to upset her. The only other person she did that with was Katara, and she's probably got a bit of residual past life love for the old lady.
She went out of her way to not fight with Asami... And for a girl who is always ready to fight the whole damn world? That's huge.
First off, I knew red flags as a term but I didn't know relationship flags was too. I'll check but if it does, thanks for increasing my knowledge.
Second, I think that isn't due to the Aang Love but more due to the mother figure love similar to the love she has for her parents. In the comics and in the show, Katara taught every waterbending move Korra knew (maybe like a zuko and iroh dynamic? Damn it all adds up, even the gender flip results in the element flip (example of fireboy and watergirl))
Yup. Korra sometimes even find it hard to apologize to her teacher (Tenzin), her parents, and her boyfriend. She was also calmer with Asami than with others. Those gestures were a big statement coming from Korra.

What I'd like to add:
I think a lot of people really mistook the ending as a confirmation of a full on in love couple, when really it's just the beginning of a relationship. And also I find it a little weird that people think it's forced when they grew closer with time and the foundation for the relationship wasn't just being attracted to each other physically, like it was in book 1 with Mako, but more having experienced things together and being aware of each others struggles.

Reunion was such a good episode for showing the audience the parallels and differences between Korra and Mako's relationship and Korra and Asami's. They both have a bit of a spat at dinner, Mako because he felt left out and Asami because she felt abandoned. But when things get going, Asami shows enough maturity to set aside the tension and once again works in unison with Korra, while Mako fights her on everything. In the end Asami is a better fit for Korra as a loving and supportive relationship and Mako challenges her (sometime rightfully and sometimes not) but from the position of a friend (See book 2 for why they don't work romantically).
people will complain more about korrasami "being rushed" when there was a several season-long arc establishing the groundwork for their relationship, but they love Sokka and Yue, even though they instantly clicked and were in love by the end of the season.

Holy crap this was awesome. ATLA and TLOK are some of my fav shows to this day . I love Korrasami and this analysis of yours was amazing. I picked up on those Korrasami hints back in season 3, but it was easy since I am bi, and I really wanted them to end up together. I was so happy when it happend.

As a straight white male....Korrasami was telegraphed. Granted, to be fair, it wasn't until the season 4 ending that it all clicked.

Without going into spoilers, the only downside of the Turf Wars comics so far is that Asami drifts dangerously close to "damsel in distress" territory a few times. It's not too overt until certain parts of both comics, but it is an easy trap the comics seem very close to falling into. I sincerely hope Turf Wars Part 3 has at least a few scenes with Korra and Asami fighting side by side like they did in the middle of Book 3 of the show.

Great explanation of the relationship here. Yes, as book 3 opens....notice that Asami is always physically touching Korra in key soft moments. That's not normal in a heterosexual girlfriend context. I absolutely LOVE the slow build even when in the spirit world. It genuinely speaks to something that will last. Yep, best explanation. Thanks.

Like many people, when I first watched the Korra finale, I cried happy tears. This is a great video and it sums up a lot of the Korrasami building blocks that people tend to overlook, so thank you. I'm watching TLOK with my girlfriend right now, and it's her first time, and I'm super excited for her. :)
Cool video, I think you brought up great points. and brought up some things even i didn't think of. and on a personal note i'm happy to see one online who isn't bashing the LOK for a change.
I'd just like to add one thing. I was rewatching LOK and in the last scene when Korra and Asami enter the new portal the background music is The Love song from ATLA. It only plays for 2-3 seconds but I think that's a hint which the writers were trying to give us.
P.S. I completely agree about the connection between Korra and Asami in books 3 and 4. I also think that one of the reasons both Korra and Asami didn't date anyone in last 2 books is that they knew at some level about themselves ( Which they confirmed in Turf wars )

I like makorra too... and i was a little taken aback when nick paired korra and asami but rewatching the series made me realise they make a cute couple
I shipped them in s1 but s2 showed how couples perfect on paper can fail practically and I don't get how people ship Makorra after it fails..so bad??
Honestly first watch thru I always saw them as just friends until the ending scene only because I didn't expect Nickelodeon to go there but I'm glad they did
It was so refreshing to not have them pitied against one another because of Mako. I absolutely love them as characters and later on in the series when the start to show signs of feelings it was very sweet. Turf wars finished and it's so cute I love it.
Loved the video, I also really loved how you showed and explained some of the core parts leading up to korrasami coming out, since people still to this day say there was no build up, hopefully with the visuals and your words they can just come to except that korrasami is canon. Also I agree with the 'I love you' being said in turf wars pt.3, Korra was already so close to saying it in pt.2!!!!

I will never forget watching the end of Legend of Korra with my wife. The scene where Mako and Korra finally sort out their friendship, followed by Korra and Asami starting to acknowledge the spark. Damn. Powerful episode

I mean come on, Mako and Korra (which is a much worse character dynamic and a horrible relationship) are shown kissing multiple times throughout the series. if they really wanted to portray a lesbian relationship, why didn't we get a KorrAsami kiss? (or a confession in words... like Bolin had with Opal multiple times... and he's not evem the main character) it's like they wanted to do KorrAsami but pussied out of actually portraying KorrAsami...
They air the show in countries where that would've been unacceptable so I remember

Just subscribed. You should consider doing more videos on lgbt ships canon/non canon, seeing as a lot of the well meshed ones aren’t talked about or was deprived as being canon in general.

love that I'm watching this two years later and when you mention your wish that korrasami could have been canon on screen for kids to see I can think of 3 relatively popular shows with canon on-screen stuff (She-ra, The Owl House, Kipo) it makes me happy to see that progress so soon :)
the pairing was thrown out of nowhere. but it’s not incompatible. the two girls are very similar and spark a lot of chemistry. and towards the end asami was the only person korra felt comfortable to talk to about personal hardships she was going through. she even wrote it all down in her letter to asami. i feel if things were different around the time the show was written. it would show the development they talked about in the comic "turf wars". such as asami’s feelings that was grown during the 3 year gap, and korra’s the time asami spent helping her while she was in a wheelchair. maybe, just maybe. it would make more sense.

Thank you so much for this video! You explained this amazing relationship that touched me in a way nothing has including ATLA (but ATLA is still freaking Awesome!) but it made me proud to be a fan of the series because they tell stories that need to be Heard to be Watched and to be Felt by viewers. Korrasami still makes me cry every time I see them hold hands and look into each others eyes because these are two well written characters that both have been through so much and if you watch back this series and see the development of their relationship knowing the end game....it is well done for the media they had to work with! I love the comics can't wait for Turf Wars 3! Hope they continue to make more!

It sucks that Nickelodeon wouldn't let them take full control because we would have seen a lot more in the relationship on screen. Somethings may have even happened sooner and we would have gotten the deleted kiss at the end.

If you think about it, Fire nation was not only the most tehnologicly advanced nation but also the most tolerant. In the Boiling Rock prison(that is a both male and female prison btw) you see female guards and female soldiers,wich is kind of unheard of in other nations.Hell,even a princess was supposed to inherit the Fire nation throne. While not perfect, (remember that time when uncle Iroh gave Azula and Zuko a doll and a dagger respectivly) Fire nation doesn't seem to be that traditional and i doubt a Fire lord would forbid gay marrige. Oh i just love picking up on these subtle details, Avatar had such good worldbuilding,i swear-

Great video! I noticed it very early on too. I stood and cheered for what I knew was coming.

So, maybe it's sufficient to say that the writers of the time needed more freedom to develop the characters fully and explicitly. Hetero-normative boobs like me are pretty much crap at noticing clues.
Anything in the comic books written by the creators of the show, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko is cannon including Korrasami relationship. Nickelodeon did not want to have a same sex kissing in the last scene. Heck, Nickelodeon did not want the show Legend of Korra to be aired because she was a woman of color. Nickelodeon execs didn't think the show would last. That's why season one had one story arc unlike ATLA.
as a pansexual teenage girl, (majoring psychology) I could def tell that asami had a crush on korra starting from book 3. like she always found an excuse to b in korras company, and played it off cool.

I really like both Avatar: The Last Air Bender and Legend of Korra too, but this is the first time I heard that there are tie-in comics for it as well, which I think I will also enjoy reading. I also agree that it is great for cartoons to help teach children that there are romantic relationships between people of the same gender and that those are not any different then those between men and women. I mainly became interested in Avatar: The Last Air Bender, because I have a deep interest in martial arts as well and also some people may recognize my profile "avatar" as a picture of the Jedi Knight Revan from the old Star Wars expanded universe canon (That is now only known as Legends). Like Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra, Star Wars also takes inspiration form Asian culture and spirituality as well, mainly from the Samurai knights of ancient Japan. I am also male, but I see myself as being deeply connected to my own emotions, even though when looking for intimacy, I tend to also look for psychical traits I find attractive as well. In addition to this, I am also attracted to certain individuals of my own gender and other genders/gender-identities as well. In terms of personal values, I am fairly progressive-minded and believe that humanity as whole can only achieve true greatness (a highly technologically advanced inter-galactic democratic civilization like those of Star Wars/Star Trek) through unity along with acceptance. I am also of the belief, that it is only ever justified to fight in self-defense when needed, and that even when people do so, they should avoid killing as much as reasonably possible.
I am also mostly attracted to women and feminine individuals, regardless of gender or gender-identity. I currently study history, sociology, anthropology along with psychology in college. From my prospective, I believe that it is important for men to value emotional connections as much as physical ones. I think there are some men, who do not value emotional connections at all and fail to understand the emotional effects of their personal choices on others, along with the importance of emotional connections to others. When I say that everyone should be accepting of everyone, I also believe that it is important for LGBTQIA people to be as accepting of straight people, as much as we want to fully be accepted by them. To me, not every hetro-person has the same prejudice values, but there are groups of individuals that are ignorant and prejudice. I believe it is possible to be cautious of the intolerance that others might have towards our personas, while also seeking avoid conflict with those individuals whenever possible. From my point of view, those who disrespect others and seek to start conflicts with them for personal reasons, are simply letting their emotional pain or anger get the best of them, which often leads to negative consequences.
