With my band in Rome we used to finish our gigs with this song back in '92. I was the bass player, I think the bass line is the best part of the song ;)
The bestest band ever, one of the best gigs I've ever seen, Cardiacs are the cats pyjamas, the pigs willy, the goats gash. I can't escape this tune, it's my ringtone......
I only new this group existed from its "Is This The Life" video back in the late 1980's. Was disappointed not to hear any more from this group and assumed they had just broke up. I rediscovered the Cardiacs on youtube about ten years ago, bought a few albums, and have been addicted every since. Really wish I could have seen them live. Thank you for posting.
Saw them live three times at the height of their pomp. They've just cheered me up considerably, despite Tim's sad situation. Apparently he is at peace with it, so still inspiring to us all as ever. Everything turns out nicely in the summertime...
Just back from Brixton, at yet another benefit concert for Tim. His friends started this song on stage and the venue exploded. I came back home and I'm here, re-listening to it over and over again.
Oh yea - great band, great gig. Had the pleasure of being there. Recorded at 3pm one Sat afternoon - very, very loud but a defining moment of my musical life. Love it, love them.
@thatstidy I agree. I never saw them live - I was JUST too late (had tickets for '08 gigs and everything). I truly, truly believe that Tim/Cardiacs will be discovered by a wider audience, perhaps long after he's/they're gone. I know lots of 'cult' bands have dedicated fans but... this is a whole new thing, right?
I had the privilege of doing front-of-house sound for them at the Marquee in Wardour Street circa July 1985. Amazing musicians and an amazing night, even if I did get smoked out by the smoke machines and cigarettes and could not speak next day.
Awesome song and performance. The drummer looks like he is swinging from vines back there. I love how they don't speed up--so easy to do live--but keeping the slow marching tempo helps the maintain its power and loft.
Tim Smith tribute album out now, 'Leader of the Starry Skies' its worthy of laudation, all proceeds to recovering tim's health, you are commanded to buy this work of genius
To all you lovers of the greatest band ever, there is a new Tim Smith tribute CD out, Leader of the Starry Skies, bands covering Tim songs, that is worthy of laudation. All proceeds to Tim recovering his health. You are commanded to buy this epic
@seasider1962 Well said! But funny enough, if I can hear even a trace of any other music in our Timmy's, its Beatles. As Tim once said: "I only ever met one person who didn't like The Beatles. And I'm pretty sure he was just showing off". That said, it seems just as scientifically rational that The Beatles traveled forward in time to hear this, then back to play their own stuff.
Years ago in a grubby flat i watched a live recording of these awesome people playing in an abbey somewhere in the south west of England. Anyone who has this vid please post or can you tell me where it was recorded. Would be much appreciated!
I bought the 12" of this with the green & flower cover when it came out. Worn out now. Like the main man Tim, unfortunately. Fabulous song. Thanks for sharing.
The number of top bands that list them as their major influence is amazing, blur, radiohead just to start. They are the best band of all time without doubt, and more influential on proper music than that useless beatles boyband. We can only hope Tim regains his health cos he's left a huge void, and he's a lovely bloke as well
@fledermaus81 cos of tim and sarah split up i think, they used to do a half sax half guitar solo, this is the best version on youtube of the greatest band in the world doing the greatest ever song, but i saw them do better. 82/3 was prob their absolute peak, hope some footage appears eventually.
They are as important as Pink Floyd in musical terms. I hear a lot of Yes, Genesis, Sex Pistols, Gilbert and Sullivan, suns exploding, micro organisms procreating, lies, sex, disapointment but most of all......JOY!!!!!!!. They are without doubt, in my opinion, the the best live experience ever.
Should have been a global international hit. One of the great songs.

I was there, only time I saw them, they were amazing!

Ten years ago a guy lent me a cd., I had never heard of the Cardiacs I heard just three notes of this song and I was immediately a fan.
This was the sountrack of my youth! Saw them a few times live......was the hottest ticket in town when they did a gig!

The most epic guitar solo ever!
this could go on and on and on and on and on and on and on,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Best band, best song, best live performance ever, end of
Love this band..mayhem at its best

Thinking about the bands that defined 1980s college rock -- U2, The Cure, XTC, Pixies -- and baffled why this song wasn't a huge hit
brilliant!
I was there - double header with Napalm Death hehe - awesome!

RIP Tim x
@thatstidy That your review in the Organ? No one could put the beauty of Cardiacs into words, but you've come damn close
I really fucking wish I'd seen them live before Tim had his heart attack. So fucking good. I do hope Tim recovers.

DVD IS OUT
Only an idiot would debate the greatness of the Beatles...ignore them
Why isn't sarah playing her sax during the solo?! Would have been epic
Apparently, by this point, half the keys had fallen off it.

How is Tim?
to paraphrase faith no more, this is it, lest i be mistaken

The Cardiacs were/are amazing, but the Beatles were great. Don't be hating on them
