I have one ,brought it years ago ,and this tool is still worth its weight in gold. I knew a shop that used them and they had about five or six of them. That inspired me to get mine.
Thanks I will look into one , I need t o replace my ECM on my 2007 Honda CR-V and need immobilizer as well for the key relearn. Can I do that with the OTC .?
Good morning, I purchased a red buttoned scanner a month ago with 4.0 installed with 2009 software. I purchased a 2009 2500 Silverado this past summer with elec issues and am thinking I need newer software. Just wondering if I need to upgrade to 5.0 before I spend much more money on 2105 software. You mention a free 5.0 upgrade but I'm not having much luck finding it let alone if I even need it. Thanks
Jeff send me your email, and I'll get you the link for the free 5.0 software. It won't update the year your tool is able to scan, but 5.0 has some great added features and may add functions to existing coverage.
Too bad there is no Lithium Ion battery option? Will this re-program ECM write new VIN and program immobilizer? What about ADAS stuff like LKAS on thiese newer Honda's?
These are limited to key reprograming, Throttle relearns, window position relearns, and such. I there is no method for flashing new ECM's or stuff like that.
@@marcelsetroc8449 Oh man...OK step one put some def fluid in it. step two you will need a scan tool like the OTC Genisys to read the codes and do a hard reset of the def system. Although I can't remember your specific model, I have to tell you that there are some out there that require some pretty in depth tricks to get back on the road. The good news is no permanent damage, but I'll bet after this you never ignore the DEF light again!
Farpoint Farms you’re definitely right about that I really appreciate all your help big thanks I will work on that will post the results later thumbs up for you👍🏼👍🏼
I liked you opinion on the Genisys Evo. I was looking at getting the Encore because it has OBD 1 on it as I want it for my Chrysler/Mitsubishi 1991. I was wondering if the Genisys has adapters to work for my /91 car or if I am best to go with the encore?
The OTC Genisys does have OBD1 adapters for just about every old school hookup. The only one that I know of that it doesn't have is the old 6 pin Volvo adapter. The Encore is a great tool, but if you are looking to save $$ the Genisys will do the job just fine.
Hi Eric, This is just the advice I was hoping for. Do you have an opinion as to whether it is better to buy the OTC version of this scanner, or a different company's version due to more installed info or cheaper updates or better support, etc.?
Great question. There is no technical difference between the models. Just be sure no matter what brand you buy to get a red button model. under the skin they are all the same and the software is identical except for the splash screen.
Most OEM scan tools won't even let you do that. Theft issues are rampant in the industry and letting aftermarkets rewrite ECM vin numbers would lead to a lot more of it. This tool can program some older GM keys, but that is as far as it will take anti-theft related work.
Hi there, hope you are doing well, thanks for sharing this video, very informative. I believe you said that the 5.0 update for this scanner can be done for free, if so , do you mind sharing that info, thanks in advance
@@FarpointFarms Awesome I have one of those older trucks , when I did a head gasket on it a few years back I didn't know at the time it required a scan tool to set the timing so I never bothered to match Mark anything. By playing with it awhile I was able to get it set close enough to stop throwing a code but it would be nice to get it set dead on as it should be. I'm currently in the market for a scan tool for reading ABS I'm finding that many of the just basic tools that read ABS/SRS and give live data are around the $300 range. I found a newer OTC Genisys Evo with the 5.0 software already on it for $200 more than the basic ones. I'm real tempted to pull the trigger on it.
Will do! I love this little tool, and think its the best kept secret for techs just moving up to owning their first "real" scan tool. It might be a month out, but I'll make a video showing it in action.
Hi thanks for the video, I have this scanner ( red startup) where can I find the upgrade for 2015? I was looking to buy another newer scanner but I love this one and but I just need it to read newer models.
It can be found new on eBay and Amazon. The price goes up and down, but as of right now its about $450 for this "final update" Mine is good to 2013 so I'm holding off for another year or two to see if the price comes down anymore. If not, its still not a bad deal.
I would like to find one of the OTC scanners for $95 but they are around $350 with very dated software. I have a 2012 F250 and a 2014 Hyundai SantaFe that I primarily work on.
Prices go up and down, Hang on until the week after Christmas. Prices will bottom out until late Feb, and remember you can get a outdated one super cheap and update it to at least the 2013 software for around $100. The 2015 software is still going for about $450.00 though. Those last 2 years are what will cost you. the 2012 you own is not a big deal but that 2014 is another story. I have the 2012/13 software and I will say that on many models if you bring the newer car up as a 2012 it will not have changed at all and will still read everything. Also there is always the generic (OBD-2) scan portion that will read just about everything without issue.
Hey man I know this is a few months later im asking...can you assist in upgrading my genisys? I got it on trade and its has 3.0. Im not finding anywhere or way to upgrade outside of buying a new card with it loaded.
The 3.0 unit can't be upgraqded to 4.0 or 5.0 with a CD because the card size is to small to take the larger program. Its still VERY inexpensive to upgrade to 5.0 and coverage to 2011. Here is a link to a E-bay listing that has what you need. www.ebay.com/itm/OTC-Genisys-System-5-0-Super-Bundle-Update-2011-Domestic-Asian-10-European-Kit/322939597085?hash=item4b30b3311d:g:S4EAAOSwUuRZvAKE There are newer and cheaper ones that pop up from time to time. I got my 2012 upgrade with the larger card for $129 with free shipping when I upgraded my friends unit last year. You could also go all out and get the latest upgrade for the unit for about $500 if you keep an eye on ebay.
Yes. I can do relearns on most makes and models. For keys the answer is also yes, but I've only done them on GM products so I'm not sure it will do other makes.
Shinny eye is caused by the camera lens and lighting condition. It can be corrected by selecting "red eye" reduction option in the camera if it has one.
great info. You won't regret it. I've had mine for 7 years now, and I bought it used. Its still trucking along. now with 2013 software, and 5.0 system (it started life as version 1.0 and 2006 software. It does use a battery up about every other year, buy they are cheap.
I've been using a new OTC evolve here at the shop for the last 4 months ever since the Snap-On rep refused to help up upgrade our Verus pro. They really are still 100% useful even today. I've got the 2015 update for this one now, and it's got great coverage for pretty much everything.
