  • The biggest arcade game yet comes to the Famicom, but how much has it lost in the transition?
Famidaily is my attempt to catalog all of the commercially released Famicom games.

definitely one of my favorite shmup series! even as super tough as this series gets. and shout-out to that weird ramen cross-promotion version I remember hearing about that around the same time as All Night Nippon SMB... man famicom got some bizarre tie-ins for sure.

I just started playing this game for the first time on my Famicom like 10 minutes ago, but to learn a bit more I watched your review first! These videos are such an awesome resource

Thanks. The whole reason it exists is my frustration with not finding anything explaining most Famicom games.

@@RndStranger I know it's an old post, but agreed. See you're basically in the same super rare tier of people who put up actual content, not just being coin begging parrots. You're the Famicom equivalent of the slower decade long grind of NES(and as such Famicom) Works, but in ways done better as you cover the game, history, but also tips/hints and doing overly deep dive either keeping it more real and concise. I hope in the future when you wrap up soon it gets into FDS, or perhaps you transition to gameboy the portable 8bit brother of this (or SFC?)

I actually think this port holds up pretty well. Sure, it's not as good as the PC Engine version (which IMO is the best way to play the game), but it's fantastic effort given how much more powerful the arcade hardware was. Incidentally, there's a really nice ROM hack (Gradius - Arrangement Chronicle Death) that converts the game to MMC5 and makes it much more like the arcade original (4 options and all), which is well worth a try (though the actual patching process is a real pain in this instance). It's still not quite as good as the PC Engine or Arcade versions, but it's really cool it's own right.

I feel that Gradius REALLY could have used a Sega Master System port that could be reprogrammed by Sega.
