0:30 The "sporty" model was specifically the City Turbo, which is the model used for the game ; you can see the intake on the bonnet which is specific to that model. That model did offer pretty decent performance for such a puny car.
I was never any good at this game as a kid, though I certainly kept trying whenever I was at my friend's house. And that original story is pretty wild compared to the US release!
I don't think I played this on NES originally? but trying it randomly in an emulator it was alright. yeah definitely had some issues but it was fun for a minute. I did find a romhack that turns it into Initial D though, haha. yknow the one where they're driving on the wangan and be on the lookout for the devil z? ;)
I notice you said Jaleco made this port but sites I've seen say TOSE made this port of the game. So was it actually them or did they list the wrong developer?
Huh, is this the first instance of a "fake parallax scrolling" trick on this system? It looks as if the foreground scrolling is choppy because it's updating the actual background tiles that have to come in the same 8-pixel increments as the fixed art that's already scrolling normally behind them. If the empty roads didn't have those box sides, you might be able to create smoother "scrolling" by placing sprites on the edges to fill them in by varying amounts!
The cats come at you way too fast! Especially compared to the vehicles. It's awkward. I would have preferred a slower movement or scrolling speed, rather than having the enemy vehicles sort of glide over the ground.

15? No wonder the cops are after her. She's too young to have a license, that car's stolen.

But then I'm probably overlooking some "parallel sliding slats" method used by now, or maybe whatever mess Exerion was doing with that horizon...
