They don’t have like really different qualities so like why argue there both amazing! I understand with other people Bc you get such a connection with the characters but they both did such a good job not making them to completely people.
@@MaggieRadcliffe omg that's SO COOL!! ik this comment was like 10 months ago but she seems like such a fun instructor! and I bet you've benefited quite a bit from her classes :)
I just LOVE the way barrett performs this and how strong she makes Janis come across. But I so admire her not copying Barrett and I think she’ll do great on tour
She makes a lot of stylistic choices here that make this performance so different from Barrett and I think maybe she’s a little more awkward with her posture but this was really powerful and unique.
I agree, and I can see the awkwardness too. I do think, though, that her awkwardness works with those stylistic choices she decides to make in the song
I just saw her in Mean Girls on Wednesday. Although I saw Barrett's Janis on Broadway about a year ago, I have to say Mary's take on Janis is absolutely BREATHTAKING. I'd Rather Be Me was one of the show-stoppers, her comedic timing and angst were on point, and also, she was a literal sweetheart at the stage door. She's been an inspiration to me for a couple YEARS now and getting to see her perform as Janis was a dream come true.
I really feel like she sells the awkward edgy teen girl who’s like “fuck all of this” with her body movements and how she enunciates her vowels. It’s super interesting
Mary Kate is a effing star. She absolutely killed it as Elphaba on tour (and after this stint as Janis I look forward to seeing her as Elphie on Broadway, hopefully with GC still around because their chemistry together is absurd). But yea she's gonna nail this role.
will she be Elphie on Broadway or are just hoping for that to happen? I definitely am too. I love MK and she KILLED it as Elphaba and will also with Janis
@@MaiaMatiIda That's me wishful thinking, but her and GC doing a double-name witch broadway run would be magical. I just want her to debut on Broadway as Elphie period.
I really like this version. She’s made it so much her own and that more edgy and a lil bit salty. She really says how it is which I really love. Also her goofiness is adorable. Ngl I feel like she looks a lil bit like Barrett tho, just has a more angular face. Idk. Also I REALLY want to hear her sing revenge party.
I love this, because they didn’t get someone who sounds like Barrett, they got someone who’s amazing in her own way, I wish I could go and see this cast
i was supposed to be seeing Mean Girls on tour TODAY but the corona virus decided that wasn’t going to happen... this is making me a little bit happier, so thank you
I saw her over the weekend. She was amazing! Definitely my favorite in the show. When she belts the really high notes you just get chills. She also does an amazing interpretation of an emo high school student.
sometimes, i have a hard time moving away from the original people who sing these Broadway songs, but this is NOT one of those times!! MK is SO AMAZING and i've been listening to her rendition of this song on loop all day!! she is SO talented and has her own spin on Janis, while also doing the character lots of justice!! don't get me wrong, i love Barrett, but it's also really amazing to hear various renditions of these songs that are just as good, if not better!
I got to meet her at the show in DesMoines and she is such a sweetheart. Her take on Janis is amazing. As a huge Barrett stan, I was really reluctant on liking the way she plays Janis but when I actually got to watch the show, I fell in love with this version as well. MK makes this character very snarky and silly and I enjoy it a lot.
Saw the tour in Pittsburgh... Mary Kate Morrissey wasn’t there that night and Sarah Crane made her Janis debut (which FABULOUS)...sad I didn’t get to see this queen, guess I’ll have to just see it again next time lol!
i just saw this show last night and mary kate did SUCH a good job as janis!! she really killed it onstage, and some of the notes she hit were just amazing. i would adore it if her singing cautionary tale was posted, it was my favourite.
i saw mean girls last night with her playing Janis. She was spectacular. She just fit so perfectly in the role. Unbelievable voice, great actress with exceptional timing. She made the show.
Kind of didn't like her when I first watched/ listened, but this second time I'm in love and it's like seeing the character of Janis for the first time all over again. She really does bring a fresh take well sticking to the heart of the character.
I just love her! She has such a different stage presence than most Broadway performers. I have friends on Broadway and grew up in the musical theatre world. So when I see someone unique like MKM she stands out.
I saw her last year in Wicked, hands down she is my favorite Elphaba because she made the character her own and very unique from the other Elphabas. I loved her so much I went again the next night!
Actually, Barrett's belting was really bad for her voice. I think that she did just as well as Barrett. Different, not worse than. (I'm not trying to start a fight, I agree that barrett is amazing!!)
This is the first song I've really listened to from mean girls musical and I could tell immediately that she played Janis. Loved this! Actually made me watch more
We saw "Mean Girls" tonight and she was Janis in the performance we saw.... I knew the name looked familiar in the program. She was sooo amazing as Janis
I got to see her live on a touring cast and ... she was jaw dropping incredible. I had never heard of her before and my whole family was like WHO THE HELL IS THAT?! She was AMAZING.
i feel like the key to a good Janis is the willingness/ability to get angsty. she’s a teen, she wouldn’t be a perfect singer, she’d let her anger and indifference into her voice. i love this.
She’s so good, and has made Janis her own, rather than trying to copy Barret, which makes her sooo likeable!!!
I agree completely!
Yeah
They don’t have like really different qualities so like why argue there both amazing! I understand with other people Bc you get such a connection with the characters but they both did such a good job not making them to completely people.

@@MaggieRadcliffe omg that's SO COOL!! ik this comment was like 10 months ago but she seems like such a fun instructor! and I bet you've benefited quite a bit from her classes :)
Her grunginess in her voice is perfect for Janis! She’s a perfect example of making a character you’re own instead copying the og.
A lot of the cast on the tour have done that well
“I’d rather be MAAAYY THAN BAAAYY WAATTH YAAAOOW”
Love a vowel modification moment
She's definitely consistent tho!
like victorious
That's literally my favorite part lol
that mod the same as the obc recording. but I do like her other little changes
@@nalabees I was going to say I keep hearing people say it's weird how she pronounces those words, but Barrett does it on the recording.
i think she would NAIL the role of Maureen in Rent
Lindsay Ann OMG YESSS
This is facts
She actually played Maureen. She also played Christine, Fantine, and Elphaba
omg she would murder that role
IVE SAID THIS SO MANY TIMES YES
When she used her fingers to push back her hair all I could think of was the words “toss toss”
fun fact: she was Elphaba on the Wicked Tour!
Gianfranco I know! I saw her live in wicked on tour 🤗
ahahahahaha STOP IT!!
dont hurt my feelings like that

Totally agree, well said.
Issy G thank you so much !

I agree, and I can see the awkwardness too. I do think, though, that her awkwardness works with those stylistic choices she decides to make in the song
Her posture is probably due to the fact it's a small room with a mic on a stand rather than a full stage where she can be more free
I think it mimics the original cinematic Janis really well!! I actually like it
I really like the awkwardness she added to the character. It’s another layer to Janis.
I think her awkwardness makes her more believable as the edgy teen girl
I just saw her in Mean Girls on Wednesday. Although I saw Barrett's Janis on Broadway about a year ago, I have to say Mary's take on Janis is absolutely BREATHTAKING. Yessica Castro plzzzzzz
On her TH-cam channel she's done covers
Yes please a full cover please I nEED THAT PLEASE
Yeah Mariah Carey would be great 😍
I can’t tell if you’re joking or not, but if you aren’t it’s in reference to the girl playing Regina (Mariah rose faith) check her out she’s amazing

Her Janis reminds me a touch of Kristen Stewart now

The gritty-ness she brings to the character is INCREDIBLE! I love iy
Yesss she nailed it!! I can’t wait to see the tour when it comes around😃
She has nailed the character omg
She did amazing but I wish she would have had a bit more accompaniment than just the piano, I feel like it was just kinda strange without it
I feel like she gives me the Movie (OG) Janis vibes and I'm here for it
edit: i think she nailed it though i still feel like i still prefer Barrett
Me too Barrett Queen
1:25-1:35 has so many awesome touches to her voice
Her cute “awkward girl” dance at 1:58 is my fave. She is such a great Janis! I hope I get the chance to see her on tour.

YES! I love Mariah too so that would be amazing if we got a touring cast soundtrack!
SHE DOESNT EVEN GO HERE with all of the line changes, they better have a touring cast album.
PREACH
