Janis in the original is just as a mean girl as regina is, theyre two sides of the same coin. Its just shes honest about it. I think too many people identified with her though (understandable for bullied and queer kids i guess) and they didnt want her to be as outwardly bad but they also didnt want to change the story too much. And now we've got a janis thats basically presented as the good character we're supposed to sympathise with, who for some unexplainable reason does shit things
@@tylerkochman1007i would agree, except in this version they used the term pyro with a slur to describe her and the joke regina made was about fire, a clear reference to the name they called her throughout the film, that she was aware of (also in this version, it was a reference to the exact event that ended their friendship which was a fire), so the comment regina made did in fact have a reason to trigger janis.
Janis was a mean girl just as much as the others. She’s just the “I’m not like other girls” type of mean girl. She’s the one that gives me the grossest vibe.
its not that shes "not like other girls". she knows that shes mean and makes it very clear. the difference between her and the others though is that she's upfront about her meanness. she doesnt backstab or talk behind someones back or pretend to be their friend when theyre not. you always know where you stand with her and thats the point she's trying to make. she doesnt hate regina and the plastics because theyre girly, she hates them cause theyre fake, or "shiny fake and hard" as damian puts it lol
@@sneepdeepshe has been backstabbing and using underhanded tactics against Regina during the entire movie. Then all of a sudden she sings this song preaching the exact opposite.
@@killerdiva7771 i wouldnt call it backstabbing. regina knows janice hates her so its not like she would feel any betrayal once she finds out janice conspired against her, not like she felt with cady. and yeah her whole revenge plan doesnt make her a good person either, but i think her song focuses more on the pettiness of girl fights. janice is far past petty, shes out for revenge (and tbh how would you even go about a revenge plan without being underhanded lol), but thats a flaw within itself. my original argument was going against the idea that she has the mentality of a girl who thinks shes "not like other girls". thats a very specific type of person which i still dont think janice is. at the very least i dont think she should be hated any more than a person should hate regina.
I miss these lines soo much: "Sorry for calling you gap toothed, Its not your fault that you are so gap toothed" "I don't hate you because you are fat, you are fat because i hate you" "I am sorry people hate me, but I can't help it that I am so popular" My favourite: "I guess I have got a BIG LESSBIAN CRUSH ON YOU 🤟🤟"
Obviously I don't know for sure, but there's a possibility that the quick panning shot at 3:34 MIGHT have been used to disguise a cut. The movie "Birdman" used this technique to create the illusion of super-long takes since the camera pans so quick that no one will be able to spot the cut. Again, I could be wrong, and the fact that it's still these super long takes is still awesome!
@@AURVAQE there's a moment where the camera pans past a wall. That's usually when they do a quick cut. But regardless, most of the song is a really long take.
I love how janis ignores the fact ehile regina was bad she at least wasn't truly false about her intentions while janis activly went out of her way to ruin her life along with cadys
I mean technically when Janis got the revenge she wanted she told Cady to stop sitting with them. Then, Cady said "I just need one more lunch" and she did the rest herself
FIrst off, wow, that tracking shot. Second, Janis's workout fail was funny. But I am kinda surprised that she didn't admit that she was a mean girl too. I love her and Damien's friendship. It feels a lot more natural than the original.
as much hate as janis is getting in this version, i personally like this version of janis better. yes, she still is a mean girl just like the others, but she isn’t exactly mean. she did manipulate and use cady, but in her eyes she also genuinely saw cady as a friend and was just doing what she saw fit to get revenge on the person who hurt her AND cady, which it seems more to me like regina hurting cady is even more motivation for janis in this version. also, janis did warn cady several times to avoid regina before cady willingly started hanging out with them in this version, and janis didn’t technically use cady’s heartbreak against regina, cady WANTED to get back at regina, and so did janis, it was a shared plot of revenge at that point.
Na ah... It was just like it was in the original. Janis wanted to use Cady to get revenge before Cady ever had any reason to want revenge herself. Small reminder here that it was Janis basically pressured Cady to hang out with Regina and spy on her in the first place to get some petty revenge. Saying that she wants to help Cady get revenge is just an excuse because now, it's all so much easier for her to manipulate Cady to mess with Regina.
@@seansilence2697 true, I prefer the original style, but the changes weren’t bad at all in my opinion, just different. They were at least good unlike the change they made with Stupid with Love 😭
it made it more iconic for karen to fall forward because she was so much dumber in this movie with the blank stare the og actress was great but avantika was amazing acting dumb and had great comedic timing and people who say auli cant sing are absolutely wrong i felt the weakest singer of the whole movie was the girl who played cady they tried to make her sound too much like olivia rodrigo when the musical from broadway made cady have alot of power numbers so alot of the changes to the songs catered to cady not being a strong singer i enjoyed all of janis's songs in this movie and reginas changes were understandable they also recreated this in the same way the mean girls musical music video of this song was shot and didnt change the song that much if at all they just lowered it to fit auli's voice so it is in a lower range somewhat
I REALLY don't like a lot of things about this remake, but I will say I think they portrayed this song better in the movie than on Broadway. Janis' mean streak/rude tendencies shows better here than what I saw on stage. Because the point is that she is also mean, regardless of the bullying. They're all mean girls. She doesn't hold up to Barrett Wilbert Weed's voice, but I wasn't expecting anyone to. It works better. Still not as good as the original monologue, but I wasn't expecting that either. This song felt forced in the Broadway musical to begin with, so it's never gonna be perfect. I liked how it was done in one shot too.
she also fixed the vowels barret did at the end of the bway version, i love barret and her voice but but those vowels were uglyyy (like meee than beee with you instead of maaaaeee than baeee waeeeth yaooooouuuu)
@@barneko3639 Mm, that's more due to the medium. Meyyy instead of meee is healthier for the voice because it's a more open vowel shape. Barrett had to sing that song 8x a week so it makes sense that she would do that to reduce vocal fatigue.
I like Janis and completely understand why she got set off at this point in the original movie, in this one the insult is so lame it doesn’t really work. I’ve tried to decipher it since I first watched the movie, it’s never even made sense
That’s what Janice is forgetting to mention boys look out for each other girls backstab I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen two boys that claim to be friends fight
Drives me crazy that someone decided they needed to have Janis literally run through the school to keep this song dynamic and interesting. I don't think it was necessary. That said, Auli'i is my everything and it makes me so happy to see her get her moment here with such a banger song, despite the weird directorial decisions.
@@LuckyWorkStudentThis is a very nonsensical conclusion to draw lmao, both Regina and Janis were mean to a certain extent. There doesn’t always necessarily have to be a “true villain,” two things can be true at once.

In the first movie, I thought maybe she worked at the school. But if she's there for a track meet, why is she being sent home??? She's pretty emotional but could probably still compete.
Janis is also a mean girl! She took a naive Cady and told her to do whatever she needed to do to stay friends with Regina and her crew then when it started going to Cady’s ego , because of course it did she had no previous social knowledge, she acts the victim . All three girls are mean girls the ending is supposed to be all three of them growing up and out of their shit
I realized the whole point of the blocking for this was to represent Janis was moving forward with her life. That's why Cady and Regina's scene before the accident is in the background. Janis doesn't want to be like them anymore (yes, she does owe Cady an apology for her behavior, btw)
This song would work if Janis didn’t spend the entire movie doing the exact opposite of what she is preaching here. “I won’t twist in knots to join your game, I will say you make me mad”. You already did by roping Cady into your underhanded revenge scheme
@@shiv1000 personally, I think that, when acted right, this line makes sense. Like "and if you treat me bad, I'll say: you're........ bad!". Adding a long pause to this place in order to make this seem, as if Janis is trying her best not to say some slur or anything like that, at least makes this line seem a bit funny.
the OG Janice will always be better in my eyes. at least she knew she was mean, she took responsibility for what she did. unlike this one, forced Cady to be a spy and do all these things and now that things spiralled out of control she suddenly does't want anything to do with it. yet she's literally the only reason why things went bad in the first place. forever stuck in that victim mentality.

How is she a pick me girl? Who is she trying to be picked by? The only guy she hangs around with is gay

Auli'l KILLED this song. She, Renee and Avantika carried
I miss these lines soo much:
"Sorry for calling you gap toothed, Its not your fault that you are so gap toothed"
"I don't hate you because you are fat, you are fat because i hate you"
"I am sorry people hate me, but I can't help it that I am so popular"
My favourite:
"I guess I have got a BIG LESSBIAN CRUSH ON YOU 🤟🤟"
I just love the songs with Janis, Damian, and Regina. I love every single song they do, and none of the others.
They fr carried this movie
2:48 to the end being one shot is SO GOOD 😭
people need to appreciate that long tracking shot!!
I was noticing that, too, though she does go out of frame a few times. But dayam, it was still impressive!
@@JoelBrewtonwhat cut
I was thinking about this the whole time I watched this scene in theaters! Absolutely obsessed

As a band kid, I feel appreciated when I see concert/jazz/marching band in this movie a couple of times
as much hate as janis is getting in this version, i personally like this version of janis better. yes, she still is a mean girl just like the others, but she isn’t exactly mean. she did manipulate and use cady, but in her eyes she also genuinely saw cady as a friend and was just doing what she saw fit to get revenge on the person who hurt her AND cady, which it seems more to me like regina hurting cady is even more motivation for janis in this version. also, janis did warn cady several times to avoid regina before cady willingly started hanging out with them in this version, and janis didn’t technically use cady’s heartbreak against regina, cady WANTED to get back at regina, and so did janis, it was a shared plot of revenge at that point.
It was the same in the original, people today are too thick to see it.
RRREAL
That is such a smart take on the situation!!!!!!! I love that
THIS.
How tall is Renee? Because lover girl is TOWERING over these ladies lol. I am LOVING the visuals of her one on one with them.

it made it more iconic for karen to fall forward because she was so much dumber in this movie with the blank stare the og actress was great but avantika was amazing acting dumb and had great comedic timing and people who say auli cant sing are absolutely wrong i felt the weakest singer of the whole movie was the girl who played cady they tried to make her sound too much like olivia rodrigo when the musical from broadway made cady have alot of power numbers so alot of the changes to the songs catered to cady not being a strong singer i enjoyed all of janis's songs in this movie and reginas changes were understandable they also recreated this in the same way the mean girls musical music video of this song was shot and didnt change the song that much if at all they just lowered it to fit auli's voice so it is in a lower range somewhat

@@Thealvita oh i know, i just like how they changed it! Broadway is crazy tough and Barret is super talented
Fun fact: there’s no such thing as apologizing in public. It’s just embarrassing that person.
“Watch this is gonna be some really crappy art or some really good fire.” Like does that even make sense to any one? Like it just sits so weird
I actually enjoyed this movie, but the insults weren’t mean enough 😂
It’s super corny tbh. Renee tried to make it work and kudos to that woman but sis as much as she is talented could not save this lazy ass script.
I like Janis and completely understand why she got set off at this point in the original movie, in this one the insult is so lame it doesn’t really work. I’ve tried to decipher it since I first watched the movie, it’s never even made sense
1:57 song starts
3:42 homie just saved him from Janis lol
That’s what Janice is forgetting to mention boys look out for each other girls backstab I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen two boys that claim to be friends fight
Drives me crazy that someone decided they needed to have Janis literally run through the school to keep this song dynamic and interesting. I don't think it was necessary. That said, Auli'i is my everything and it makes me so happy to see her get her moment here with such a banger song, despite the weird directorial decisions.

Ngl I feel that Janis created this whole charade. Just think about it long and hard. I feel that Janis is the fourth mean girl
She is. Janis is the true villain. Regina was innocent.
@@LuckyWorkStudentThis is a very nonsensical conclusion to draw lmao, both Regina and Janis were mean to a certain extent. There doesn’t always necessarily have to be a “true villain,” two things can be true at once.
@@k_n_c_y totally. The whole point is that all of the characters were mean girls not just the plastics lol
@@LuckyWorkStudentRegina wasn’t innocent at all. Janis isn’t “the mean girl” the movie is called Mean Girls because there is more than one (cady, Gretchen, Regina, and Janis, excluding Karen bc she was chill)
I mean technically when Janis got the revenge she wanted she told Cady to stop sitting with them. Then, Cady said "I just need one more lunch" and she did the rest herself
And the way the bus just casually hits Regina in the background
That Revenge Party fourth wall break hits different when you remember that this is canonically a film Janis and Damian made
The track meet thing tied the loose end to the original. Because I always wondered how the girl ended up there.
In the first movie, I thought maybe she worked at the school. But if she's there for a track meet, why is she being sent home??? She's pretty emotional but could probably still compete.
It’s the SHE DONT EVEN GO HERE GOT ME DEADDD😂😂😂😂
Seemed a bit more subdued, but they did pretty well incorporating the bus into it.
At least in the original move, Janis acknowledged that she wasn't a good person. Here, she acts like she's innocent.
This song would work if Janis didn’t spend the entire movie doing the exact opposite of what she is preaching here. “I won’t twist in knots to join your game, I will say you make me mad”. You already did by roping Cady into your underhanded revenge scheme

the OG Janice will always be better in my eyes. at least she knew she was mean, she took responsibility for what she did. unlike this one, forced Cady to be a spy and do all these things and now that things spiralled out of control she suddenly does't want anything to do with it. yet she's literally the only reason why things went bad in the first place. forever stuck in that victim mentality.

“Walk away turd” is forever stuck in my head now at 4:25
So your best friend screwed you over
Acted nice when she not nice
Well, I have some advice
'Cause it's happened to me twice
Here's my secret strategy
It always works because
The world doesn't end
It just feels like it does
So raise your right finger
And solemnly swear
Whatever they say about me
I don't care
I won't twist in knots to join your game
I will say, "You make me mad"
And if you treat me bad
I'll say, "You're bad"
And if I eat alone from this moment on
That's just what I'll do
'Cause I'd rather be me, I'd rather be me
I'd rather be me than be with you
We're supposed to all be ladies
And be nurturing and care
Is that really fair?
Boys get to fight, we have to share
Here's the way that that turns out
We always understand
How to slap someone down
With our underhand
So here's my right finger
To how girls should behave
'Cause sometimes what's meant to break you
Makes you brave
So I will not act all innocent
I won't fake apologise
Let's just fight and then make up
Not tell these lies
Let's call our damage even
Clean the slate 'til it's like new
It's a new life for me
Where I'd rather be me
I'd rather be me
Than be with you
I'll say, "No" (no)
I'll say, "Knock it off with your notes and your rules and your games"
And those sycophants who follow you
I'll remember all their names
And when they drag you down
Like they inevitably do
I will not laugh along with them and
Approve their palace coup, 'cause that's not me
(Janis, Janis, Janis, Janis)
I don't need their good opinions
I have plenty of opinions
Everybody has opinions but it doesn't make them true
What's true is being me
And I'd rather be me
I'd rather be me than be with you
So raise them high 'cause playing nice and shy is insulting my IQ
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
I'd rather be me (I'd rather be me)
I'd rather be me (I'd rather be me)
I'd rather be me than be with you
(I'd rather be me)
I'd rather be me (I'd rather be me)
I'd rather be me (I'd rather be me)
I'd rather be me than be with you
