Planets in No Man's Sky are WEIRD

  • No Man's Sky has a lot of planets. So many in fact, that no one source online can agree on just how many there are. I mention in this video that there's like 3 quadrillion or something if I'm remembering right, but after reading some more, that might not even be true. Why does it even matter? What's the difference between 3 quadrillion planets and 3 billion? NOTHING!!!!!! They're practically the same number. They actually are the same number, I did the math. No I won't show you the proof.

No Man's Sky really captured well that weird 70s psychedelic sci-fi vibe. I love it

Yeah there's not many games (at least that I've seen) that really go for that vibe. So many of the planets in this game would fit really well on the cover of an old sci-fi novel.

Except the pre-release did it, not the current one. Looks more like Elite Dangerous at this point. What is there is cool but knowing how this game looked before it got release it is pretty sad seeing it drop in quality over MP and VR or some nonsense they focus on. Planets do be really predictable and boring now. Universe just feels clinical in a sense where it is limited to do any variation what so ever.
Yes i played from day one if you wonder that is why it makes me feel disappointed to see them take a different approach, but you can check all the pre-release footage and such yourself just so you know i am not lying unlike some studio HUR DUR.

I once got into a bubble planet. I adopted a rainbow bubble. The floor was gray, the sky, pink. This was the craziest planet I've been into

I love No man's sky and I really enjoy this kind of videos. Highlights and exploration of these alien worlds with their own quirks, weird fauna and strange beasts. It's cozy in a strange way...
I think my favorite thing in NMS is to find really nice planets which gives you a sensation of "home", like you actually would enjoy living there. But I also love to stumble upon really hostile or unsettling worlds, msybe because I love horror or simply because of that extremely unfamiliar feel you can get from them. Like your far away from earth or somewhere you shouldn't be...

    Good video!
I´ve never played No Man´s Sky myself, but this video really brings Kerbal Space Program vibes! Just exploring unknown planets and star systems is such a mysterious and in my opinion sad feeling.

I've seen some wildly outlandish and bizarre planets in no man's sky - it truly is a delight to just look for pretty picture spots around the galaxy.
My favorite planet quirk is when there's an atmospheric shader that completely changes the pallette of everything, including your ship - makes things so mysterious.
I also quite enjoy the ring rock formation on some planets, its great for an impromptu flying challenge.

Wow, man! That scared emoji when you mentioned the ossified creature eats blood made my night!
You know what? I've always been a pessimistic, but then I look at videos like yours, or play a game like NMS or Dark Souls or Stardew Valley, and I'm grateful human beings are capable of this marvels.
Black metal band Rotting Christ, post punk band Bauhaus, whatever it is Anna von Hausswolf and Chelsea wolf play and sing, or books like Alan Moore's Jerusalem, Gene Wolfe's The Book of the New Sun, all the stories Borges wrote, or movies like Winter Light, The Seventh Seal, Gozu, Audition, Wild at Heart, Battle in Heaven, or comics by Rick Veitch, Alan Moore again, Jamie Delano. These are things that make me optimistic about human greatness.
One game I would like you to give us a tour of, is Kingdom Come: Deliverance. It has some of the best visuals I've seen in games lately (I played it this year; it's a little old now but it looks better than many newer games).

20:46 Honestly, anything that looks like a true 'Earth-like world'; green grass, blue water and blue skies.
Though my planet where I have my base (the system I found through a mission) is blue grass, gray water and green skies.

Just sad that the original vibe of the game is completely dried and boring compared to the vision they had. Sometimes i wonder what NMS could have been if they did not listen to the amounts of people screaming for multiplayer, base building and all that trash, everything is so desaturated, a lot of people lately agree with that because they can compare now the versions and my god is it a clear sign.
One time i had to literally put Reshade on to even make the colors come back and realized the game is lowered in saturation by 75%, i am not joking. Whoever was in charge of that design choice is totally not getting the point of Scifi Fantasy. Color is obviously not the only issue, the generation is limited now, planets all look the same, exploration which was the main premise of the title is pointless if everything is predictable the moment you land.
But hey, i guess one positive is still the fact it at least does what Starfield cannot, fly to a planet and actually land yourself. But come on, i really want to see the unlimited variation promised in 2014 to 2015, not another blue sky planet with blue water, and green trees. What happened to HG? -_-

    • @PretzelYT
      @PretzelYT  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

It's weird, because I do like a lot of the new stuff in the game. Especially base building, I love finding a specific place on a planet and building it out as my home.
But I also wish I could play the original version of the game. The one without multiplayer, base building, the space anomaly, all the other random stuff they've added, that stuff is cool. But I wish we could experience the launch version. It seems like it went for such a specific vision, I bet it felt so much more lonely.
They promised the world and back before release, and while they might not have had the time/skill/money/whatever to make it as they promised, I think they've done a pretty good job making that up over the years. They've definitely earned back the trust of their customers. Though I guess we'll have to see how the pre-release cycle of their next game goes. 😅

Hmm, that'd be an interesting one to cover. Isometric games are already a challenge for videos like this, but aren't most of the environments procedurally generated?
Not saying it couldn't work, but I haven't played a whole lot of the game myself. I can't say for sure what that video would look like.
