Zenith El Primero A386

In this episode of What Is On My Wrist, Cam walks us through the finer points of a vintage Zenith El Primero ref. A386. The Zenith El Primero ref. A386 was unlike any other chronograph when it was released. Both aesthetically and mechanically speaking, it was a wholly unique chrono! On January 10th, 1969, Zenith introduced the world's first automatic chronograph caliber, the 3019 PHC El Primero, beating Seiko and the Chronomatic group (a joint venture between Breitling, Heuer, Hamilton, and Büren) in the competition to produce the world’s first automatic chronograph.
Powered by the ingenious Calibre 3019 PHC, the A386 was born an immediate classic with its instantly recognizable tri-color overlapping subdials, eye-catching red sweep second hand, and its original and distinctive “ladder style” bracelet. Additionally, the legendary Zenith caliber 3019 PHC movement would go on to become the base movement for many other important automatic chronographs -- including the incredible sought-after Rolex “Zenith” Daytona.
It’s no overstatement to say that the Zenith El Primero ref. A386 is one of the most horologically significant chronographs to have come from the ‪@zenithwatches‬ brand and one of the most important chronographs of all time.

The Movado Datachron HS360 is an even more interesting version as it became the first automatic chronograph in space on the wrist of Gerald Carr onboard Skylab-4 in 1973.
It allowed the astronauts to compare the 1970 Movado Datachron HS360 with an Omega Speedmaster of the same year, immediately showing the build quality of the Movado with its 40 mm steel cushion case containing the very high frequency (36000 Vibrations Per Hour) calibre 3019 PHC ( Power, Hour-totalizer, Calendar), capable of tracking elapsed time to a 1/10th of a second.
Moreover a comparison of automatic chronographs was possible as William Pogue wore a Seiko 6139-6005 during the same 84 days long Skylab-4 mission. #MoonwatchUniverse

When I couldn’t buy a Rolex chronograph (dealers with them were waiting for someone to pay too much) I ended up buying a Zenith El Primero with screw down crown and pushers. Also had an oyster type band.
