The trick to decal is first put a gloss varnish then decal with micro sol etc, then gloss again and when finished with the rest of the model give it a nice matte varnish.
I used to apply the gloss varnish before the decal, but I experienced a few instances where it softened the varnish and caused it to 'fog' up a bit. This was most likely due to me not waiting long enough for the varnish to cure properly, but I've been avoiding that step since then. However the microsol effect is still amazing and well wroth the occasional hassle.
honestly, for decals, I find that putting a small layer of micro SET while the decals is soaking (I use a 25mm base flipped as a small water pot). I then use tiny tweezers to lift the decal and put it in place. Gently dab the excess micro set, make adjustments, re-apply a tiny coat of micro set going from the center of the decals towards the edges. I repeat this process until the decal is "flat". I then move on to the next decal. Once they are all done, I apply a final coat (thin) of micro sol to help it blend with the gloss varnish under it. (the sol in micro sol is for solvant so use very sparingly, micro set is less harsh and will make your decals soft enough to follow curves if done correctly) Varnish with matte or satin to seal it all and match the rest.
Thanks, I actually spilled my set a while ago, I've been mainly using sol. You seem to be spot on the fact its a lot more harsh, I'll have to pick up some set again and give it a go. Cheers!
When the first plastic HH boxes came out I did a few kitbashes of chaos space marines in the HH armor :> it turned out really well and made for a little more subtle blend of old and new and made for a nice look, huge fan!
Man this video is so inspiring for thank you 👏🏼 I have 30 of these HH MK6 guys and I am a 40k Red Corsair's player 😅 these kit bashes are so simple but so elegant they are perfect for my Corsair's..I build 5 of them and got stuck I was just using the MK6 stock ...and some bits from the chaos marauders from AOS fur cloaks and such....but totally reimpsired now 👍🏼
Hell yeah mate! That's awesome to hear that. I really need to try and make a Red Corsair sometime, they get brought up a lot 😅Best of luck on that project.
Thanks mate! Glad to hear the videos are enjoyable :D I've been trying to go through my pile of shame first, however the new guard patrol box has been burning a hole in my basket for quite a while now. Hopefully soon 😅
I am currently in the process of removing (most of) the trim on a kill team of Chaos Space Marines (it doesn't take up that much time, but some places are very difficult to reach), and in the process have removed most of the spikes and the horns on the helmets. Imo removing the horns on helmets make them look even more menacing. It is not too complicated of a conversion to do and might give even more character to your models. A de-horned helmet paired with the loincloth bit would make for a really cool sergeant in your unit! In any case, love your kitbash, they look fantastic!
Damn that's a big undertaking, sounds like it's well worth it though. I think I have a few spare helmets I can try and test out the hornless idea on, cheers! Thank you for the kind words too!
as always you have some of the best 40k mini ideas, nice one, i really like the idea of a not so over the top chaos chapter, could be a great inspiration for a tactical/reasonable chaos homebrew chapter, evil raptors lol
Wait, i didn't get that part about why you don't use varnish fully: Are you saying Microsol dissolves the varnish or the decals? I have unopened bottles of MicroSol and MicroSet here and am hesitant to use them so far
It doesn't fully dissolve it, but if the varnish is fresh, it will soften it up, similar to what it does with decals. I've also had it 'fog' the varnish when it was fresh. Since then, I started to only apply the decals before the varnish and wait half an hour before varnishing the models. The stuff is great at making decals look amazing, but it can be a bit harsh. I still always use it, but there were a few learning pains 😄
you should be using Micro SET first and only use micro Sol at the last stage to blend it a bit more (honestly optional if you've gloss varnished beforehand and are going to matte/satin varnish after application.
Very nice models , I like when Chorus Heresy dudes get some chaos vibes ! However , I think , that trims only on one arm look a little bit lazy . If I make this models , I would give them more wild head to represent , that mutations start on bodies and after some time corrupt armour
Cheers! Entirely fair, I think going for a more aggressive chapter like the world eaters would also work really well. Especially some of the new Khorne CSM stuff.
I did consider making a connection to Erebus and Kor Pheron, but I ended up not including that. For these guys, I imagined them being present during all the events that unfolded and being among the first to receive knowledge of the ruinous powers.
I've actually tried scraping off mold likes with a spoon, works better than you'd expect 😄. I've been using this sanded down blade for well over a year now without any problems, sharp blades were a different red story.
You should really be using a sharper knife. You’re more likely to hurt yourself using excessive force on a dull blade than you are by letting the edge do the work.
My iran warriors army us full herasy armer out sid of the damon until s wal using bits unless I us close combat bits from a chaos wepons but keep the Amy in full heresy iron warriors

That freehand runetext on the gauntlet looks amazing... well done. I have permashakes - could never get lettering that fine. Lol.

I like the old Chaos Marines the detail they had 👌🏻
They did a great job giving a lot of character to those models. Helps them stand the test of time.
I really like that look, ive always foind the chaos marines are too busy
Cheers! Yeah, I personally love the idea of thousand sons armor, but when you start painting them it's a bit of a nightmare...😄

I just discoverd your videos i am loving the kitbaching. Also just subcribed.
would love to see your take on kitbachted Astra militarum.
Thanks mate! Glad to hear the videos are enjoyable :D

I love and share your take on highlights. I too love volumetric highlight with selective edges
Yeah, it captures the best of both words and a lot less tedious then pure edge highlights.
Nice suttle kitbash. You gained a new subscriber
Thanks mate!
*subtle
Sweet vid mate love your content
Thanks mate 😃🤘

Great models. Spread the word!!!
Thanks! 😀
Looks cool. 🖌
Thanks!

Thanks mate! 'Evil Raptors' 😄 That's actually a really cool idea, I'll have to keep that in mind for the future.
I thought the same ! After listening to some night lords lore/stories I've been wanting to make up à kill team of non chaos traitor marines !
Gonna Watch this now!

consider getting some white ink, and then thin your white paint with that instead of water. I've seen someone else do it it came out much less chalky.
I have some on hand, I will be sure to give a try. Thanks for the tip!
Erebus??
I did consider making a connection to Erebus and Kor Pheron, but I ended up not including that. For these guys, I imagined them being present during all the events that unfolded and being among the first to receive knowledge of the ruinous powers.
Awesome
Thanks! 😄
Brother… what is a “DEC-EL??”
Canadian pronunciation 😄 Apparently some Aussies also say it similarly.
interesting. We here in the states use the same emphasis, but we pronounce it “DEE-Cahls”
Use a sharp blade! You are more likely to injure yourself with that spoon you are using there!

That's awesome mate, iron warrior work really well with a more minimalist design of heresy models.
very neat concept. eerie. those poor bastards... all corrupted and then living for millennia as they became more and more defiled. yuck
