    That vent setup with the temp controlled struts is VERY clever. As a matter of fact, that whole greenhouse is about 3 steps ahead of anything I could build. Well done !!!

    My favorite FREE closed cell insulation comes from the back of Hot Tub stores.
    When they replace hot tubs they frequently bring the old one - including the cover - and toss them for disposal. I remove the cover and have 2" thick, free insulation panels. :-) Craig's list is also a good place for free hot tub covers.
    That mustache is going to fuel My "dreams" for a month ! !
    Thanks Joe ! ! ! - KJ

      KaleidoscopeJunkie now that’s a great idea! Didn’t even think of that but it would probably be really good insulation for sure!! As for the moustache...haha....it will only be making short comebacks ever so often as my wife really doesn’t like it😂

    Asthetically, I love it. I like how the different roofing materials look, and hope they will meet your needs. The auto opening vents are super cool. Glad you could straighten and be happier with the peak of the roof. Two thumbs up!

    I loved this sunken greenhouse the first time I watched you build it, BUt now it's even more resistant now. Wish we could sink one here, but I will have to stick to my 34 ft polytunnels. But I can grow anything in them just no geo warming. Loved this video BTW. You really did a great job on it again. Tony

    Hey great vid again...just a thing on the solid roof is the only thing to consider when planning your plantings, is lower light quality for growing on North side during low seasons plants will tend to lean to the light and slower growth possibly. Plus one thing we did on nursery greenhouses to combat hail is chicken wire framed about two inches above roof. Smaller hole chicken wire...doesn’t compromise light much and can be used as cold cover support for winter time ...frame made from welded reo-bar. The idea is the hail is broken on impact and takes the main force. Plus holds the weight while it melts. Greenhouse looking good look forward to seeing the produce😊👍

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      stephane van der lee thank you! That’s kind of what I was thinking....planning a sliding panel structure and then mounting the chicken wire under neath the ‘rails’ or track of the sliding panels. But it’s still in debate in my head....haha....until I start putting something together. So with that said it would also change greatly between now and then 😉🤔

  • @markhwarner
    @markhwarner 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Joe. To protect your polycarbonate from large hail, you can put 1x1 metal hardware cloth above it, stood off by an inch or so. We did this on all our skylights 20 years ago after a big hail storm took them all out. We've suffered huge storms since then, but no broken skylights. It's not super pretty, but it works really well, and allows sunlight in.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mark Warner that’s kinda what I’m thinking about Mark. When I get my shade structure up I’m thinking about mounting hardware cloth or chicken wire just underneath that structure which will be about foot over the south slope of the greenhouse. And it’s good to know you had success as well😀👍
      Btw....I spoke to my in laws about your family cabin. My father in law remembers when they were working on that one😉

    A lot of greenhouses have a reflective material on the inside of the north wall because it helps bounce the sunlight coming from the south around. So it might work perfectly!

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  5 ปีที่แล้ว

A couple weeks in the itching begins, residue from everything I eat and drink take up residence, the whiskers brush my lips and annoy the Hell out of me, I get a cold and my face gets raw from trying to keep my s'stashe from getting encrusted with snot... and eventually I wake up at 2am and grab a trimmer.

    Oh! Man glad you told us about the mustache. I was worried your evil twin brother had hijacked your web-site. I was looking for him to shoe-black it and start to twirl it between his thumb and fore-finger. On a side note in the greenhouse how about using some of those insulating foam panels you used on the camper on the metal side. Make them removable because you only really need them in winter time to hold in heat. Also perhaps some of those LED strips along the center beam to light the place when it's dark. A small battery and one small solar panel should provide all the power you need.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      William Bays haha....nope, not a twin....he was the real deal😉😂
      And yes those panels are what i was thinking about as I really like the aluminum lamination on them and they seem super stout too. But I also may just staple up some plastic to create a air gap.

    For insulating the metal side of the greenhouse frame a lip on the outside and lay closed cell panels in it (taped together). Cover that with plastic and ... sheet metal! (Or sod if you think it can take it.)

    Nice tidy building skills. If it looks good it'll probably work good.

    Really nicely done. If I may suggest, a plastic netting on the automatic vents might allow complete protection from lizards etc. if attached to the underside of the popout vent and the roof structure underneath the moving panel.
    I'm making a 1K sq ft hoop house for aquaponics. Just about to finish the deck inside, then mount the grow beds.

    The greenhouse revival is looking great. I agree that using the same product is a really great $$$ solution. I just think about folks that live in a hurricane or flood zone that keep rebuilding. You do what you got to do and live with those factors. I see the lizard running around in the background. I am sure they will enjoy your gabion walls. I enjoy lizards but I an not much of a snake fan. Any worries or concerns of the moving in. I really love the headroom that you have in this building. Looking forward to the growing season. Thanks for sharing.

    Wait a minute...a caterpillar crawled up onto your lip somewhere in the middle of the video, lol. That is definitely a +5 Firefighting Skills - 'Stache. Good upgrade on the Greenhouse - anything that can survive the AZ summers is built well.

    Yeh I remember you looking for a hail solution. We had a hail storm roar through here (MD) and I could just about squeeze the Mrs car in the garage but my truck was outside. I threw two good quality drop cloths over the cab and hood and shut the doors on them to keep them in place. People up and down the block had damage to cars and homes. Nothing catastrophic mind you but enough to call their insurance guy. My stuff? Just fine!

      I was glad I was home when it happened. But giving your situation more thought, how about something like an old RV awning frame with some waterproof canvas rolled up in it for a hail cover?

    Adding insulation to that north side roofing will make an enormous difference in heat retention during the winter, as well as extending the growing season in there further into the warmer parts of the year. Maybe also consider putting a thick layer of wood chips/mulch surrounding the structure as insulation for the soil.
